Drawing Anime Hair Basics

How To Draw Anime Hair – for begginers | Step by Step Tutorial

If youâre a beginner to the world of drawing anime hair, youâll need to keep a few basic ideas in mind.

#1 Draw Forwarding Facing

That means your character will be facing straight at you, like an ID picture. Why? Because you wonât have to consider the perspective or angles of a character whose head is tilted to one side.

#2 Use a Template

This will save you time and ensure you have the right proportions.

#3 Draw Clumps, Not Strands

Take a look in the mirror and notice how many individual strands of hair you have, their texture, the different colors that make up your overall hair color, and the way the light hits it. Thatâs a lot to include when drawing.

To simplify the process, anime artists draw clumps of hair, instead of individual floating strands.

#4 Practice Your Clumps

Clumps are made of two curved lines that are farther apart at the top of the clump and gradually come closer together until they meet at the bottom. It looks like an upside down cone.

Get in the habit of practicing the technique, because drawing anime hair is all about clumps and the cones they taper into.

This is the basic cone structure at the end of each clump of hair:

You can work up to different types of cones and clumps to create different hair textures.

#5 Direct Your Hair Clumps

Think about where your clumps point. Bangs and straight hair will tend to point down. Wavy hair points toward the face. Spiky hair points outwards. Messy hair will point in alternating directions.

Drawing Anime Pony Tail /tied Back Hair

Another fairly common anime hairstyle is the ponytail. You will notice that there is basically no side hair in this particular example . So the hair can pretty much just be splits into the front and back sections. The back consisting of the hair over the top of the head and the pony tail.

Draw this type of hair as follows:

Common Styles Of Anime Boy Hair

Boysâ styles can still vary quite a bit, though there are less accessories to worry about. While girls’ styles tend to be more sleek , boys’ hair can get a bit messier.

Long Hair

Do most boy anime characters have short or medium length hair? Yes. Which is why longer hair tends to make a big impact.

Short Hair

Tried and true, short hair is quick to draw and ranges from messy to sleek. The key is to use smaller clumps that vary in direction. A striking short-haired character that comes to mind?

Haikyuu!!âs Kei Tsukishima.

Go-to spiky hair has been made popular by Naruto and countless other male anime characters.

Messy Layers

Get messy by drawing lots of layers going in different directions, similar to Edgar J. C. Ashenbert from Earl and Fairy.

Bald or Buzz Cut

While it seems contradictory to include bald on the list , you canât deny that itâs a striking look.

Slicked Back Hair

As featured on characters like Daikoku from Noragami, slicked back hair is a look that will certainly have you using your hairline guides.

Blinding Bangs

Lastly, blinding bangs is when hair falls in front of one or both eyes like rom Shokugeki no Souma. To draw blinding bangs, you add long sweeping clumps to the front of the face.

Although I do not clearly draw the line of the head like in this example every time, I do identify it in my mind when I draw. So here, in these examples, I identified the line in purple for you.

In this front view, the eye line will always be around the center of the vertical line between the chin and the to top the head. So if you measure, the space between the chin and the eyes, is roughly the same as between the eyes and the top of the head.

Here is the under-drawing sketch for this example. I used procreate and an iPad pro to draw the face on a separate layer. The face is used in all examples here since hair is the focus. For the hair, you can see that I am more focused on the overall shape of the hair and less worried about what the lines look like at this stage.

These lines are just a guide for the final line art in the next step.

In this step I drew over the underdrawing with more precision. It could use more refinement and some shading still but much of the indecisiveness of the sketchy lines of the underdrawing is now left in the past.

Lets look at more examples.

Draw The Main Hair Shapes

Anime Girl Hair Drawing at GetDrawings

When I have the mood and feeling in mind. I start to design the character. Giving this chilled yet happy look on her face I move on to the hair. There are a few ways you can approach drawing the hair. Either you just start to draw the hair detailing it out. Or you create these major shapes.

These shapes give you the overall feeling right at the start. With these big blocks, you can easily see how the hair works or not. You can also easily try different sizes and flows to the characters hair.

The benefit of doing it this way is the so-called undo effect or regret phase. You are not yet too far with the hair only to realize it doesnt work. I hate the feeling of drawing something quite long and then realize that it just doesnt work. I mean, you have spent so much time and energy on it and then it doesnt work. I hate it.

So even though I sometimes draw hair quite detailed in the beginning do check the major shapes at some point.

Those give you a direction and overall look of the whole hair. Its easier to design a hair when you just draw big chunks of it. Rather than drawing individual hair strands. Its also faster to draw big blocks. Getting that feel right with ease.

How Do You Choose The Right Color

Short answer, there is no right color! Play around with them until you find what you like: try pink on blue, purple on green, orange on yellow and so on. Have fun! I wonder how not to make black and white hair look gray, purple, etc.

Using colors similar to the drawing environment will make the tone look correct. For example, if her shirt was red, I would add more shades of red to her hair. I usually use colors already in the drawing and play with them. Like that hair in a bluish-red room: theres a little bit of every color in it.

However, if youre working with complex hair like a rainbow or gradient, you can use Multiply Blend mode to overlay a new layer and test which colors work best without affecting the gradient.

    Drawing Anime & Manga Hair

Anime hair is often based on real hairstyles but tends to be drawn in clumps rather than individual strands. One good reason for this is that if you are drawing multiple frames of animation or multiple panels of a manga it will simply be too time consuming to draw anything overly detailed.

A good approach to drawing anime hair is to split it into several different parts such as the front, sides and back/top .

For drawing characters that can go along with these hairstyles see:

2 Easy Ways to Draw Anime Hair | Step by Step Tutorial for Beginners

With this step, you can add the following set of water droplets drawn inside the main hairline. Usually, in anime and manga, this frame is painted in white as otherwise, it would be very difficult to see it in black hair.

This makes this water set slightly slower to add when doing pencil shading. One thing you can do is leave these areas white and shady around them. You can pull a few âinside dropsâ to make the process less tedious if you want to do that. Alternatively, you can use gouache paint to draw a drop on the pencil blur.

You can simply draw drops over any color or blur if you draw digitally.

In the case of these drops, you can draw most of them like the shape of a âUâ that is slightly wider at the bottom. You can also combine several drops into waves such as waves. If you want to show off immersed hair, draw these wave patterns to make them bigger and make more of them.

Once you have finished drawing the inner hair drops, you are very good at everything you need to draw anime hair that looks wet.

Above, you can see the combined comparisons of dry and wet hair.

The steps for drawing wet anime and manga are similar to drawing normal hair in the same style. The main features of wet-looking hair are the small volume and the hair follicles pointing downwards. You can also add a few drops of water to keep your hair moist.

There are many variations of male anime hairstyles. This tutorial focuses on the more common and generic styles that you are likely to see in many shows and manga.

While drawing hair can seem complicated a good way of managing the drawing process is by thinking of it as being split into various sections. These are the front, sides and back/top.

To help avoid mistakes this tutorial uses a see through drawing approach. This means that if you are going to be following along using pencil and paper its important that you first make light lines that you can easily erase. You will need to do so with parts of the drawing before you finish. You can darken the strokes after you complete the line drawing.

Draw The Top/back Of The Combed Hair

Add the back/top portion of the hair in pretty much two main curves going from one side of the top of the head. Its overall shape should somewhat hug the head/face getting closer to it the more it goes down. You can also add a few small clumps at the very bottom and slightly above the ears.

Again these clumps will take away just a little bit from the neat look but will make the hair appear slightly more natural.

    Finish The Line Drawing

For this step first erase the hairline and the part of the head covered by the hair. Next draw in some curved lines in between the hair bumps/clumps of the back/top section and the teeth of the front section.

You can also add a tiny clump of hair that is hanging down around the upper middle of the hairline as shown in the example. Simply erase part of the hairline and add it in.

Once you finish the line drawing go over it with a darker stroke.

    Adding Details To The Hair

When you have a nice structure and the main blocks are defined further. Still maintaining the major shapes and seeing that the hair works for the person. It is time to move to the detail phase.

You should reserve time for this phase, as it will take some time to get this completed. Go through the main blocks and structure you created previously and this time add those details in.

Break boring looking shapes by adding hair strands here and there.

Also, break the flow of the hair by adding those curls.

Did you remember the wind? Yes, even though the wind is blowing from right to left. When you draw the curls, curling the hair inward and towards the right. This creates excellent differentiation between the flow and breaks the mundane flow to the left.

Common Styles Of Anime Girl Hair

This is where artists take the basics of drawing anime hair and come up with unique and character-specific hairstyles.

Youâll notice how itâs all about clumps of hair, how they are placed, directed, and combined together to make some of the most common anime girlsâ hairstyles.

    Layered Hair

    â

Layers help frame the face and add extra oomph to a characterâs look. Layered styles can be long or short like Tokizaki Mayaâs long gradual layers from Hatsukoi, or Nishizono Mioâs short blue choppy bob from Little Busters!

    Straight Hair

    â

Considering the overwhelming amount of straight hair in Japanese culture, itâs no surprise that straight hair is the clear winner when it comes to anime hairstyles. A shining example is Classic Literature Clubâs Eru Chitanda.

    Hime Cut

A hime cut combines straight bangs a thin, blunt jaw-length layer and straight hair. Itâs become so pervasive in the anime world that itâs also called the anime or jaw-drop haircut. You can spot it on Yumeko Jabami from Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler.

    Ponytails & Twintails

    â

Often the epitome of the female anime look, ponytails and twintails are a go-to hairstyle. Consider Sailor Moonâs iconic pigtails or Mai Kawakamiâs side pony from Myriad Colors Phantom World.

    Buns

    â

Buns are another innocent, feminine hairstyle. They come in many styles, but we like Kaguraâs Chinese-style covered buns from Gintama.
