Anime is a popular style of Japanese animation used in cartoons. This characteristic art style emerged in the 1960s, both in cartoon anime and the related comic book manga. Its popularity increased markedly during the 1990s and still continues to grow.
Anime characters typically have large, expressive eyes, and extreme emotions are commonly displayed. Loss, death, unrequited love, and betrayal are popular themes, especially in series aimed at adults rather than children. As such, sad characters such as the one in this drawing guide are a staple in many anime.
Today, over 400 studios produce anime, and others have adopted the style outside of Japan. More than half of the world’s animated television shows are considered anime.

Anime Expressions: Anger And Rage
Anger is perhaps the easiest to represent in Anime and Manga art. Features determining this emotion are easy to identify: the eyebrows are lowered and slanted to the center of the face. The mouth is open the character is often shouting in anger. The whites of the eyes are visible as the eyes are open wide.
Really intense and emotional spikes of anger are highlighted by a shouting mouth in Anime, perhaps just like in real life. In this expression, the jaw will move down substantially in real life, but no so much in Anime and Manga art. The silhouette of the head stays the same in most examples. However, a lot of the faces showing anger in Anime are drawn with the nose higher on the face, making space for the open-shouting mouth.

A drawing of a character shouting at another, or a character leaping into a fight with a battle cry is characterized by a forward-moving motion. Notice how in the image just above, the head is drawn to show forward movement. Inevitably, if this drawing showed up in Anime frames, we would see the character moving forward on the screen.
The jaw is dropped down at this angle . We are looking up from below at this character as indicated by us seeing the bottom of the nose, and the bottom of the chin, and not seeing the top of the hair/head.
In the example above, the eyebrows are tipped down to the center of the face, showing displeasure. The eyes are open wide, focused on the object of dissatisfaction .

Drawing A Scared Side View Face
For a scared look draw the eyebrows raised and the eyes wide open with smaller than normal iris/pupil. Though actual irises of the eyes dont change size they are often drawn smaller in anime to give a character a really scared look. As anime eyes tend to already be fairly wide drawing them even wider may make a character look too deformed so the solution is to draw smaller irises.
Finally draw the mouth slightly open and draw the opening of the mouth curving downwards.
Expressions For Anime Eyes
In real life and in the manga/anime world, eyes are one of the most important features to express emotion. Remember that a series of facial muscles tighten or relax, depending on the expression you want to achieve.Lets take a look at the eyelids, the inner eye, and the eyebrows.
The emotions intended in these examples are easy to understand.
In example 1, the eyebrow is a bit tense, but the eye is relaxed and shining. This conveys a worried state or maybe missing someone or something.
In example 2, the eyebrow is arched vertically, and the eye is closed, so we can deduce that the character is happy.
In the next example , there is no shine to the eye, the iris is completely white, and the pupil is reduced significantly. This shows that the character is aggressive. Note that the eyebrow is arched in the opposite direction of the happy one in example 2, which also signifies anger.
Let us check all these expressions to deduce their meaning: 4 is suspicion, 5 is worry, 6 is neutral or observing, 7 is shock, 8 is sadness, and 9 is shock or madness, depending on the situation.

Drawing Bawling Anime Eyes
For bawling really upset eyes draw them fully closed in upside down curve . Draw the eyebrows further down even closer together than the previous examples. You can also draw a few wrinkles to emphasize that the eyebrows are really squeezed together.
Draw the tears in the same pattern as the previous example but further down the face . You can also add a few tear drops falling down near the chin .
Drawing Different Anime Eye Expressions
The factors that determine the expression of the eyes are:
- The position and shape of the eyebrows
- The position of the pupils
- The position of the eyelids
One major difference between drawing realistic eye expressions is that in anime and manga the size of the pupil can be changed to create a more dramatic expression .
Below is a breakdown of each expression.

Drawing Anime Mouth Mouth Partially Open
There are certain instances that show up very often in anime and manga, where the character is speaking, or smiling or showing distaste in a situation, and the characters mouth is half-open. A similar drawing of a mouth is used in all of these varying situations.
In these instances, artists can show lots of emotion through the corners of the mouth, but no teeth are visible at all.
In the above examples, the dip created by the area between the lower lip and the chin is indicated by a single mark. If you place your index finger on your lower lip, and slide it down slowly to your chin, halfway through you will notice that your finger moves inward before moving outward towards the end of the chin. This dip in anatomy is represented here with one mark.
Try to study from the examples below, and try to identify what kind of character this expression could belong to. Can you draw in the rest of the face of the character just by looking at the mouth drawing? This could be a good exercise in invention of facial features.
In the example above, lets identify the tilt of the head and location of the mouth. In the example on the right, we can see that the head is tilted slightly to the left. We can infer this just from the drawing of the mouth.
It also appears that indication mark for the dip above the chin is more prevalent in male than female anime characters. The male faces seem to be represented to be more angular, providing the mark indicating the dip shows a change in the plane.
