The Tools You Will Need For This Tutorial

How to Draw Easy – Manga Eyes | Fun2draw Online Anime Tutorials

In all honesty, all you need is a graphite pen and a piece of paper. Thats it!

I would recommend a rather soft graphite Pen like a B4 or B5 but really any pen, that can achieve a huge variance in tone is just fine.

You can also just use any paper you would like even though I recommend a stronger drawing paper, something, that can survive some erasing. I usually use sketch paper or an illustration block.

You will need an Eraser and some whiteout. A kneadable eraser would be best but any eraser will do in the beginning.

This tutorial is meant for exercise purposes. So the tools I mentioned above are more then enough for you to learn how to draw Anime eyes but if you really want to create an illustration I would strongly recommend you to get a set of graphite pens that go from HB to at least 6B and you should definitely get some drawing Paper or illustration board!

In the clean-up stage, we focus on making the foundations look clean and professional. If youre working on paper, draw your rough stage as lightly as you can. If youre working digitally, use two layers within your art software, one for rough and one for clean-up. You can always lighten the rough layer using the opacity slider later.

Here we can see an elementary diagram showing the 3D form differences between a real eye based on a sphere and an anime eye which is essentially like a flat sticker.

Keep this flat structure in mind when drawing anime eyes from the side view of the character, where the shape effectively compresses.

How To: Draw 1/2 View

This is a very good art tutorial on how to draw the manga head from the side view.

The artist explains her drawing process pretty nicely, and its easy to follow through. What I like about this tutorial is that the artist is explaining the differences between the female and male heads.

When we think about reality and how our heads differ from male to female, you dont notice so much difference. Yes, a male might have a bit more prominent chin than females, but overall we look about the same.

However, in the manga, there is a clear difference between male and female heads and faces, and in this video, the artist brings those differences up in a really nice and clear way.

Draw The Shape Of The Eyes

One defining feature of anime eyes is that they are usually much bigger and wider than real eyes so that is how we will draw them.

The eyes should be far enough apart that you can fit a third eye in between.

For a normal expression draw the iris slightly covered by the top eyelid while just touching the bottom eyelid. Draw the eyebrows slightly above the eyes in a smooth curve.

When drawing different expressions the eyebrow shape and positions and the positions of the pupils can be different.

Male manga and anime eyes look quite a bit different from female eyes. They are narrower, and lack the extra eyelashes. However, the process is very much the same.

Begin with a circle for the eyeball. Then add in the upper and lower eyelids. For the male anime eyes, draw the eyelids so they overlap your eyeball. This will make them more narrow.

Finish drawing your male anime eye using the same steps that you used for the female eye. Then use your black pen or marker to ink your drawing.

Add an eyebrow as well. And color your eye drawing the same way as described in the female eye drawing process.

Just like with the female anime eyes, the male eyes can be drawn in many different ways as well. Experiment with different ways to draw the male eyes, and see what style you like most.

Experiment with using different colors for your eyes as well. Dont feel like they always have to be blue or green. They can be purple, pink, brown, or any other color you want to use.

How To Draw Anime Boy Face

A very simple and straightforward video on how to draw boys face in anime style starting by drawing the circle and adding the needed lines for the jaw and eyes.

As you might have seen, the basics are always the same. Draw a circle and then add lines. Its that simple, yet it isnt when you want to draw a beautiful face. Its all about proportions and how things are placed in the head.

The video has a narration that makes it easy to follow through and learn at the same time. Its also nice to see the hand movements from the artist and the thought process behind the lines.

Thicker Lines On The Upper Eyelid Stylizing Eyelashes

Adoption rate: in most example in anime. This element highlights what a lot of anime drawings are like: an effective simplification of complex real life forms to their most basic visual representation.

Since we usually have more volume in eyelashes on the upper eyelid than the lower, in anime drawings, the upper eyelid lines representing the eyelashes are drawn thicker, with more visual weight.

Beginners Mistake And How To Avoid Them

There are quite a few mistakes, that beginners make. Here are the Mistakes, that I see the most and my tips on how you can avoid these mistakes.

The eyes look deadWhen the eyes, you drew, are looking like they are dead, then you should add reflections in the eye. Reflections make an Eye look alive!

The eye looks flatIf your drawings look flat then you should check your shadows again. when you draw a shadow in the wrong place or when you draw your shadows too dark then the drawing will look flat. Also if you don´t draw the eyelids correctly then your eye may look flat as well.

Don´t hate your workI know, that it can be frustrating when you want to draw something and it doesn´t turn out as you imagined it. Then you will hate your drawing or you will think, that you can´t draw in in the worst case you may even stop drawing.

The truth is, you can´t expect to be good at drawing when you start out. It will take practice and you should look at your improvements and not at your failures. Just look at what you did wrong and make it better in the next drawing. Don´t get hung up on your mistakes.

Keep it light in the beginningDuring the sketching phase, you should keep your lines light. So don´t push the pencil down to hard. By keeping it light, you will be able to erase the lines easier.

So be very careful about selling your Anime fanart online or offline. You can read all about fanart and why it is illegal right here on my blog as well.

Some credit William Shakespeare with the maxim, “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” This means that you can learn a lot about a person by watching their eyes.

The eyes are one source of nonverbal communication – we show our feelings to others when we cry, when our eyes are drawn up along with a smile, when they grow wide with fear, are squinted in anger, or when we roll our eyes in contempt.

The Japanese animation style known as anime takes the art of the eye to a whole new level.

The eyes of anime characters are large and expressive, often square in shape and somewhat pointed, rather than round.

Each artist or series displays a distinct drawing style, which may include interesting styles of hair and dress and differing degrees of realism.

Modern anime arose during the 1950s, following the success of American animated cartoons, such as those produced by Walt Disney.

Since then, the popularity of anime has spread around the world. Many popular cartoons are dubbed with other languages, such as English, and marketed around the world.

A subculture has grown up around anime and manga – not only do fans watch the television shows, but they often delight in playing video or card games, reading books, dressing up as characters and engaging in live action role play, or learning to draw their favorite characters.

Sketching Male Anime Eyes

  • 1Sketch the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a horizontal line with a slight curve. Then, draw a line with a slight upward curve coming down off one end of the first line at a 45-degree angle. Make this line about 1/3 the length of the first line you drew. At this point, the upper lash line will have a C-shape, and youll be able to see the outer corner of the eye. To draw the lower lash line, draw a short, horizontal line with a slight curve centered under the upper lash line.XResearch source
  • Male anime eyes are usually smaller and narrower than female anime eyes. The curves on the upper and lower lash lines should be slight so the eye doesnt look too round.
  • Draw the eyes about 1/8th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if youre drawing one.
  • 2Draw an oval between the lash lines. Center the oval and make the top and bottom overlap with the lash lines so only part of the oval is visible. Make the width of the widest part of the oval about the same as the length of the lower lash line.XResearch source
  • This will be the iris.
  • 3Add a small circle near the top of the oval. Draw the circle on the left or right side of the oval, near the top. It doesnt matter which side, but place the circle on the same side in the second eye if you’re drawing one. Make the circle about 1/10th the size of the iris.XResearch source
  • Youll leave this circle white later on so it looks like light is reflecting off of the eye.
  • Leave the small circles you drew white.
