Anime Subgenres And Settings

These are the more specific categories of anime. Some of these subgenres are unique as they can describe a type of narrative that is essentially exclusive to anime or at least more prevalent in that medium. These subgenres cover a wide variety of themes and settings that can apply to the wider spectrum of major genres. For example, there can be multiple anime with a school setting that range from comedy to horror.

What Is The Difference Between Ecchi And Hentai

Best Ecchi Anime

When one engages with the ecchi anime genre, that means one should expect to see content that’s inspired by intimate desires, stimulating scenarios, and pleasurable fantasies. The ecchi genre differs from the hentai genre in that it features softer and milder content, whereas hentai is more explicit and hardcore. Ecchi primarily showcases sensual innuendo and soft-core H antics to entertain the audience. Most of the time, this genre is paired with comedic or harem content, but it can also blend with other genres such as drama and romance.

Ecchi blends well with other genres because sexy scenarios can be created in a variety of ways. Naughty and exciting content is not limited to comedies or dramas. For example, the harem genre blends well with ecchi because a circumstance wherein a main character is surrounded or pursued by multiple characters of the opposite sex creates opportunities for exciting mishaps and encounters.

What Are Beach Episodes

Another term thats commonly used by anime fans is beach episode, . If youve ever sat down and watched pretty much any popular anime, youll know exactly what Im referring to. You know that one episode placed in the absolute middle of a series that takes place at the beach and seems to just be an excuse to throw the characters into revealing bathing suits and get them wet? The episode thats so out of place with the rest of the series that the following episode continues with the actual plot of the show as if these characters never went to the beach in the first place? That is the beach episode. Beach/pool episodes are so prevalent that youll even find them in the darkest of series.

My favorite example of this trope is in the anime Gakkougurashi! also known as School-Live! in English. This is a psychological horror anime that will make you feel absolutely dreadful inside while you watch it. However, nine episodes into the series is the pool episode. The beginning and end of this episode are important to the plot and are just as dark as the rest of the series, but the entire midsection of this episode is focused on our main cast of cute anime girls splashing around in adorable, small, swimsuits. But at least theyre having fun, and seeing them happy is honestly just a nice mental break from the rest of the series.

What Does Senpai Mean In Japanese

Senpai is one of the common honorific titles that are used in Japanese to politely address or refer to someone in a conversation. That is why it is usually used to refer to an older or more senior member of the same company, school, club, association, or organization . While for strangers, guests, clients, and superiors, who do not offer you assistance, coaching, or mentorship, other polite honorifics such as san or sama are more common.

In most cases, your senpai will be someone older, but your senpai can also be younger than you. In general, if someone has entered the same school, workplace, club, or organization before you they are your senpai and you are their kohai . Even when you are in fact the older person.

    Origin Of Ecchi / Etchi

Is the ecchi genre ruining the anime industry?

The expression Ecchi / Etchi is our spelling for , which in turn represents the pronunciation of the sound H: / et /. After World War II, that phrase was the only one used to refer to hentai. Hentai means something like abnormality or perversion and is a category of manga and anime with suggestive or pornographic content.

In this context, Ecchi / Etchi established itself with the new meaning in Japanese usage. Teenagers generally used the term in the 1960s to refer to the subject of sex. Phrases such as Etchi Suru, which means to have sex, show the spread of the term until the 1980s.

Today Ecchi / Etchi is used as a term for everything that has to do with erotic or pornographic content. The exact meaning, however, varies depending on the context and is sometimes interpreted differently in Western parlance than in Japanese. Ecchi / Etchi is used here to distinguish it from the more explicit hentai.

Senpai Or Sempai: Which Is Correct

The correct spelling of the Japanese word senpai is . However when pronounced it sounds more like sempai since the word flows more easily when you shift the n sound to an m. That is why in English, you will also find it commonly but incorrectly transcribed as sempai.

Ecchi means sexually related behavior. It refers to playful perverted activities or embarrassing moments like the accidental flashing of ones underwear. It does have lewd content, but it is censored and contains light or softcore nude scenes, unlike hentai. After reading this, it is self-evident that the genre is made for the mature or older teen audience.

How To Use The Word Senpai In Japanese

There are two correct ways how you can use the word senpai in Japanese. The first one is to add the honorific after a persons first or last name, the other way is to address someone or refer to them just by calling them senpai.

For example, if the name of your senpai is Takumi Usui. You can either call him Takumi-senpai or Usui-senpai or just senpai. In anime, the first two seem to be more common especially when the character addresses or talks to the person directly.

However, when I talk to my three students who still attend high-school they often tell me that they ate Ramen with their senpai or that they went to see the tournament of their kohai . They usually never mention their names.
