Live Action Singing Mafuyu This Is Not A Drill

Spoilers for Given

Back in 2019, a clip circulated around Twitter from an anime I hadnt heard of. That anime? Given. That clip? Right here:

Based on the still-running manga series released back in 2013 , this clip prompted me to look into the series and become queer rockband trash for Givenwhich is also the name of the band. This clip, depicting a personally relatable image of gay panic, shows Ritsuka having a total meltdown about his feelings for Mafuyu . Akihiko, to Ritsukas surprise, not only has no issue with him liking boys, it turns out Akihiko likes them, too.

Seeing a teenager being reassured about his sexuality so casually sold me on the series. Akihiko made being queer sound so normal, treating it as something you didnt have to be scared of. I could understand why so many people were championing this series when this clip made the Twitter rounds and Im happy to say the rest of the series is a delightful watch.

Heres the premise for the anime series, which you can watch over at Crunchyroll:

Somehow, the guitar that he used to love to play and the basketball games that he found so fun just lost their appeal that was until Ritsuka Uenoyama randomly met Mafuyu Sato. Ritsuka had started losing his passion for music in his everyday life, but then he hears Mafuyu sing for the first time. The song resonates with his heart and the distance between them starts to change.

Is The Anime Given A Bl

A group of musicians in a band form a bond over guitars when they meet in school. However, their fascination with music never stops when the main characters go back to school. While one of them harbors a mental wound which only can be overcome by music and love, another is seeking reconciliation through the arts.

Why You Should Watch Given

While Given falls within the BL, slice of life, romance, and drama genres, I believe that every anime fan, no matter which genres they’re a fan of, should give Given a chance. Aside from the amazing musicianship displayed by the characters and the original music, which is created by Centimillimental, Given has so much to give in terms of its storyline, and its characters and their lives are ones you’ll truly become invested in.

I’ve been known to stay away from shows because they look too sappy, and while that wasn’t the case with Given, I must admit that I was worried this would be just another run-of-the-mill romance. As someone who typically doesn’t give anime like this one a chance, I quickly learned that I’m missing out on some phenonmenal series after finishing its first season.

As I mentioned earlier, Given is an anime about finding the light in the darkness. But, it’s also very much so an anime about finding oneself and the way the characters do that in this series is through music. The music in this show, even though it’s mostly instrumental, is some of the best I’ve ever heard.

As you learn more about Mafuyu and his connection to the guitar, you’ll find out why this anime is so profound. As he falls in love with music, he falls in love with life again, which in turn, allows him to connect with himself and others, and it’s a truly beautiful thing to witness.

Given Is First Of Its Kind Boys

As per Anime News Network, the TV anime first premiered on Fuji TVs Noitamina programming block in the Japanese language in July 2019. This anime is the first of its kind based on a boys-love manga premise to air on the programming block.

As described by Crunchyroll, the storys premise reads:

Somehow, the guitar that he used to love to play and the basketball games that he found so fun just lost their appeal

That was until Ritsuka Uenoyama randomly met Mafuyu Sato. Ritsuka had started losing his passion for music in his everyday life, but then he hears Mafuyu sing for the first time. The song resonates with his heart, and the distance between them starts to change.

Should You Watch The Given Anime

    Mafuyu’s Song | given

The genres which Given officially falls into are BL , romance, drama, and music.

While these genres make it quite appealing to a lot of fans, it is worth it for everyone to try to watch just because of the quality of storytelling and how compelling the narrative is.

The series is presented in an amazing way with music getting a great highlight and being a great motif to connect the narrative strands.

Using music as a theme means that musicians have a lot of interesting details to pick up on, while casual viewers get a great musical experience.

The music in the series is the original creation of Centimillimental who have obviously dedicated a lot of effort to make this series as spectacular as possible.

But it is not just the music that makes this a great recommendation but also the storyline and how it presents the relationship between the lead characters.

Knowing this is a BL romance some viewers could be put off as many of these romances tend to be relatively formulaic in anime but Given avoids this with the slow burn between Mafuyu and Uenoyama being anything but conventional.

Nothing too much will be spoiled here, but if you have been burned by BL before for poor representation, Given is definitely worth an attempt to redeem the genre.

As previously mentioned, Given has a heavy focus on finding the light within the darkness and this theme seeps into every element of the series.

What Is The Given Anime About

Given The Movie | OFFICIAL TRAILER

Given follows the story of student Mafuyu Satou, who we do not initially know much about with his history shrouded in mystery.

The series begins with the meeting between Mafuyu and classmate Ritsuko Uenoyama as they connect over the Gibson guitar Mayfuyu was napping with on a staircase.

Their conversation starts as Uenoyama berates Mafuyu for how damaged his guitar strings are.

From this point, we start to learn more about these characters as their connection deepens.

Mafuyu surprisingly does not know much about the guitar and ends up asking Uenoyama to teach him how to play which he reluctantly accepts after much repeated begging from Mafuyu.

After this Uenoyama invites Mafuyu to meet his bandmates to help him learn. This is where we meet Haruki Nakayama the bassist and Akihiko Kaji the drummer.

While it takes Mafuyu a while to pick up playing the guitar, Uenoyama manages to overhear Mafuyus astounding singing which leads him to ask the newbie to be the vocalist for their band, but shockingly Mafuyu does not accept the offer.

It takes much reverse begging to get Mafuyu to accept which does not happen until he runs into an old friend who motivates him to take the risk.

We do not know why Mafuyu is so hesitant, and how someone with no knowledge of how to play guitar has such a nice one, but these are the mysteries that compel watchers to keep going through the series.
