Basic Tools That Are Essential For A Beginner
If you think that you will improve drawing without investing in some good quality tools, then you are completely wrong.
Yes, its true.
The tools and material that you use while drawing has a lot of importance.
You must be remembering the times when a pencil and a sheet of paper were enough to make you an artist. Perhaps, it is not similar now.
No, this doesnt mean that you need to spend thousands of bugs to buy a single tool. Instead, to save money, you can go with the basic ones at the start and eventually get your hands on the professional tools.
Also, you can try some renowned companies like Faber Castell and Camelin who are pioneers in creating professional tools at cheaper rates than the others. As another alternative, you can go for a small packaging of the same material if essentially needed.
So, if you are ready to start your artistic journey, you will need:
How To Draw Manga: Mastering Manga
My last book in this list is How to Draw Manga: Mastering Manga by Andrew Harnes. Its a pretty short book just shy of 100 pages teaching all the core basics of manga drawing.
Youll learn the fundamental artistic process, which materials to use, and how to draw manga characters from different angles.
Naturally this leads into many different chapters on eyes, ears, noses, hair, and facial expressions. Andrew also moves into poses and how to draw characters doing different actions.
The chapters are fully actionable so you can easily copy the exercises and study from them as you go along. The only downside is the short length of this book.
However the writing is superb and the illustrated examples are designed to help you really see how manga art is formed.
And thats my list! I know theres a lot to choose from but youll notice each book does have its unique benefits.
If youre a complete beginner who just wants to learn the manga art style then check out Manga Crash Course. Another great choice for a complete beginner is The Master Guide to Drawing Anime which gets into stylized exercises.
Or if you want to create your own graphic novels then Pop Manga offers great composition and storytelling exercises.
Take a look over the list and see if any other titles catch your eye. And remember that the one consistent point across all these books is practice! Put in the time and you will see the results.

Drawing Is Making Marks On Paper To Draw Well You’ve Got To Practice Thats The Only Secret
When I started drawing 14 years ago, it didn’t occur to me that I would or could get better. I didn’t view learning-to-draw in terms of a learning curve . I didn’t start with the intention of building my skills – I started drawing to pass the time when my kids were at swimming lessons and gymnastics classes and dentist appointments. Hand-drawn circles resembling cantaloupes, triangles with wobbly angles, you get the idea.
And what I learned after years of drawing is that if you draw a lot, you get better. Its not magic! I like to draw all sorts of things, and I noticed that the variety helped me stay engaged. So definitely keep drawing! Its easy to lose steam and think youre not making progress. But it is happening! Keep drawing and youll gradually feel more comfortable|confident with your drawing tools and build fine motor skills.

Portfolio/ Artwork Studio/ Artwork Storage
If you are thinking of leaving this point, then you should drop your idea. What if your drawings are not as good as expected, you need to create specific artwork storage or portfolio to keep them safe in one place.
Dont throw away any of your artwork if you dont find it as good as Picassos paintings. It is just that you are in your beginning phase and you will learn only after a series of bad artwork. All you need is a daily practice and a lot of patience.
Moreover, along with these two, you will need to love your improvements. So, it is essential to preserve your precious artworks in a safe place like a portfolio file.
How to select a perfect portfolio for your drawing?
Simple, look for the following criteria:
- Size: The size of a Portfolio will depend on the size of your sheets. For instance If you are using the sheets of A4 size, then you should go for a Portfolio that can fit A4 sheet quite easily. However if you are working on a larger sheet or mixed sizes of sheets, then you should go for an A3 size portfolio as it can secure all sizes of sheets, be it A3 or below.
- Rigidness: Think! What is the fun of having a Portfolio that can not prevent your sheets from bending? So rather than going for a cheap alternative you should invest into a good quality portfolio that can last for long. Also, with a good quality portfolio you need not to worry about your work.
Draw A Shape That You Find Challenging
What kinds of shapes do you find most challenging or frustrating? That would be a perfect theme for a sketchbook page. Study the components that go into the shape. To get more familiar with how to draw vehicles, I drew the taxis swooshing into the taxi stand as I waited for my brother to arrive at the airport. When you start, things are always wonky, they arent going to be picture-perfect. I look back at these taxis and I love this little collection.
