Anime Voice Acting Basics – How To Be A Voice Actor

You remember that stuff you made in Step 1? Chop that down to single audio clip just a minute or two long, to showcase your range as an actor. Include brief clips of you playing very different roles, moods and tones. Put that on your page. Samples of narration, audio book reading, and other kinds of voice work are also good to include, but should be separate clips. If someone important is looking at your page, they’re likely in a hurry, so you want to make finding what they’re looking for as fast and painless as possible.

Ways To Become A Voice Actor In Japan

  • HOW TO
  • They are the voices behind the characters we love. Voice actors, known as seiyuu in Japanese, have the capacity to make or break a characters persona with the power of the voice. A lot of popular anime characters from hit series have a huge fan base but, more often than not, the voices behind them only get minor credit. The truth is, voice acting isnt as easy as it seems and pure determination often is not enough to land a spot in this competitive industry in Japan. However, there are methods that increase ones chances of getting discovered by top voice acting management and here are the four most common ways.

This is the most obvious method in the list. If you want to learn a craft, study it! Schools such as the Human Academy and Yoyogi Animation Academy specialize in anime and offer training courses to interested students who dream of becoming professional voice actors in the future.

One of the great things about this is that age doesnt matter. Most, if not all, training schools only require you to pass the entrance exam for you to take part in the classes. Whether you are a fresh high school graduate or want to pick it up later in life, it does not matter.

Make Friends Don’t Be A Douche

The good news is that anime industry people are generally INCREDIBLY nice, open and warm to fans. This can actually be a problem: prominent industry people get a lot of weirdos cozying up to them at conventions and won’t take a hint that they’re being annoying. Teaching social skills is beyond the scope of this column, but keep in mind that voice actors and industry pros are adults, human beings, and if they’re at a convention, are probably exhausted and would really love to talk about something other than nerd opinions on anime and voice acting for a while. Confidence is important, humility is just as important. Be kind. Ask questions. Learn from them. And leave them alone if they seem annoyed. Just like you would anybody else. The same goes for email and twitter conversation.

Don’t just make friends with names you already know. Find other aspiring young people who are just starting out. They can introduce you to people, and you can compare notes and cheer each other on. An actor’s life is filled with constant rejection and failure, so it’s important to have a friend network to help you stay encouraged.

How To Become A Voice Actor

Technology has changed everything. Go back twenty years, and as a voice actor, you had to work in large recording studios. Most of these were only in the big cities like London, Manchester, Birmingham etc.

Today’s technology has transformed that. Now, most voice actors have their own mini-studio and record work from their homes.

Now, of course, that sounds easy and nothing is that easy, there is a lot more to voice acting.

Most people though find it hard to get into voice over or even get started. The main reason is that they keep hunting around the internet looking at videos on YouTube, some voice-over blogs, but often this is all just disjointed and hard to make sense of.

The internet is great, we all love it and spend more time on it. But, it can also be frustrating.

Trying to find good advice, and reliable and trustworthy sources isn’t easy.

Content is often all over the place and so it’s hard to put together and even harder to learn.

What’s worse is that there is a great deal of bad advice in the industry and of course some companies are simply looking to make money off people who don’t know what it takes to learn about voice overacting. Yes, there are scammers who make false claims.

The team are on hand for anything and everything, if you have a question, ping it across, it’s that kind of place.”

What Voice Acting in Anime Is Like

Unless theres an anime studio where you live, youll have to hone your craft locally through acting and voice-over classes and then relocate to get work in the anime industry. Once you get your foot in the door of an anime studio, hang around every department. Listen to how the writers labor over the right words to match the mouth movements. Visit the editing bay and watch as technicians manipulate to get dubbing perfection. Study every aspect of anime to understand what you need to know to be successful.

    Start Small And Locally

Once you have a salable demo reel, meet with a local agent who also handles voice-over talent. You dont have to be a member of the acting unions at this point. In fact, if you live in a right-to-work state such as Texas or Florida, you wont have to join the union at all. But being a member of either of the acting unions gives you a credential thatll open doors to major studios.

Dont pay your agent anything upfront. He may tell you that he has a voice-over coach who will improve your reel. For a fee. Tell him youll think about it, and run out the door. Respectable agents work with you when they consider you salable. The key here is to NOT meet with an agent until your acting coach feels you have learned enough to start auditioning.

Local businesses and commercial production houses are always looking for local talent. Youre inexpensive and fit the financial needs of the client. Start small and learn the ropes. Suffer rejection and start again in the morning. Its all part of the learning curve. And once you land a local job, youll have work to include on your resume. And that resume, even if the work isnt paid, is your calling card, along with the demo tape that includes your local work.
