Eyes From Different Angles

How To Draw A Digital Anime/Manga Eye | ArtRage Tutorial

From other angles eyes might appear flat if drawn in a straight line. The front area of the face is a little bent and the eyes appear slanted.

The form of the eye changes when the pupil moves. Dont be afraid to break up the eye shape to make it dynamic. The pupil moves on a sphere, not on a straight plane.

Especially when drawing eyes from a ¾ view it is important to imagine the spherical space they move on. Keep the thickness of the eyelids in mind. Stylised approaches might leave out some anatomical details, but the shape should still act like the realistic eye in order to achieve a 3-dimensional result.

When the head is turned away in semi profile you might only see the tip of the eyebrow and eyelash. Turning it more reveals there is no space between eye and eye bridge. This indicates a strong change of direction to where the head is facing before it turns into a full profile.

How To Draw And Color Anime Eyes Tutorial

I like this tutorial, even though it might look a bit messy as the camera is moving where the artist moves the pen. Which creates a bit of difficulty to follow along.

Sometimes the drawing is way too zoomed in, but then again, that is the way the artist prefers to draw, so we do have to appreciate and understand that.

Its also nice to see a tutorial from someone using the Procreate app. The thing that I like the most about this tutorial is the way the artist shows the different layer techniques for coloring and rendering the manga eye.

Starting To Create And Color The Eye

Anime eyes are generally very simple, just a mere reflection of the realistic ones we have on our faces but this DOESN’T make them any less deep or important. You can simply cut down complicated shapes into more soft and simple ones for example, most anime eyes are totally lacking the Tear Duct, or the lower eyelio.

Start by adding the base color of your liking, and then in a multiply layer start adding shadows with a gentle brush create gentle strokes starting from the top corner of the iris.

With the same method, create more and more depth to the top corner of the iris, by adding darker and darker shadows I left a palette of the colors I used in the top left corner of the piece, if you want to use them. After that, procede to create the central pupil, in which I created a gentle and soft shadow all around it. After this, “embrace” it with two , soft lines .

You might not notice the difference from the two pieces but I’m using this picture to make you understand and learn an IMPORTANT thing: don’t always stay on the same color spectrum: I used a dark purple to add a more interesting look to the eye. If you use only blue is gonna end up being boring and less deep.

How To Draw Manga Eyes Eight Different Ways

While the video does not have a voice-over, it does have text from which you can follow the drawing process. What I like about the video is that the artist shows you step-by-step how to draw manga eyes.

You will get to see how the artist creates eight different manga eyes, and while we can debate whether there is enough variation to justify the eight different styles, its still cool to see the drawing process nevertheless.

The end results are amazing, though, and what is nice about the process is that you can see the coloring of the eyes too. Something that many art tutorials seem to lack.

Adding Lashes And Details

Anime Eye Tutorial by Iseanna on DeviantArt

Using the same brush , I added tiny lashes to the piece. When creating lashes, I used the same color of the “lid” it’s attached too as you can see, the bottom ones are pink, while the top ones are blue. Using the same colors help to unify and make the piece look more coherent within itself.

Adding details with CLIP STUDIO PAINT it extremely easy this is why it’s the best tool to create anime content. It has a WHOLE section where you can use sparkly and cute brushes to add details in either your pieces or your manga sheets! I personally use these A LOT and I added the Sparkle A and the *soft* circle to my piece to make it look cuter.Other than that, I created a multiply layer and I added a shadow on the top of the eyes to add depth using a dark blue color and a soft brush.

Using a “Mapping Pen” I added direct light to this piece with white dots all over it. There’s no such rule on WHERE you should put direct light in your eye. I like to add it to the sides, the top corner, near the pupil and on the bottom where the lower lashes are. I also added some to the cheeck and to the upper eyelid! To create the “glowing” effect, duplicate your light layer always using an “add glow” layer, and use the “Gaussian Blur ” option, under FILTER > BLUR > GAUSSIAN BLUR.And we’re done!

Highlights From At Least 2 Light Sources

White or bright circles or ovals appearing in stylized anime eyes are representative of highlights on the surface of the eye.

Note here that usually one highlight is dominant and is depicted larger, and the second subordinate and depicted smaller. Neither appear as a bounce light or reflective light, rather, each is a highlight representative of another light source nearby.

Adoption rate: in many examples in anime. There are also many examples where only one highlight appears, or where a light is cast from multiple sources and many highlights appear.

If you are confused about terms describing how light interacts with a surface, or need a refresher on terms like bounce light or highlight, follow this link to an article I wrote on this topic, glossary of often-confusing art terms is at the bottom of that article).

The chart below indicates how in many examples, the smaller highlight is directly across the surface of the iris from the larger highlight, in some cases, it is placed across and down the surface of the iris.

How To Draw Anime Eyes Female

There are so many ways to vary how you do your female manga or anime eyes. The shape of the eyeball in this drawing is an oval, instead of a circle.

The upper eyelid was drawn with more eyelashes. And there was an additional line added above that for the eyelid fold.

Also, the lower eyelid was drawn slightly away from the eyeball. The eye itself was drawn using four highlights, and green was used for the color. Again, three shades of green were used.

Notice how on this drawing, the highlights were outlined using a thin black marker. And the darker greens were added around the highlights.

There are many other variations as well. And as you practice drawing you anime eyes, youll start to develop your own style.

Add The Outer Top Eyelid Eyelashes

It should be noted that you could stop at step seven of this tutorial and have a perfectly normal anime eye but since the tutorial focuses on female eyes we will add some eyelashes.

The first place you want to add the eyelashes to is the outer corners of the eye. Generally eyelashes sort of fan out around the eyelids so you can draw anime eyelashes in a similar way.

Next add some smaller eyelashes at the inner corner of the eye.

Since the eyelashes are fairly small you can also shade them as you draw them.

There is no need to add any in the middle as these usually tend to point forward and therefore visually sort of just merge into one shape.

Degrees Of Realism And Stylization

In anime and manga, eyes are drawn in various degrees of stylization. Human anatomy in anime is stylized often to the point of being unrealistic, yet still very recognizable as the anime counterpart of the real world person the artwork is describing.

This is an important point. This means that if we are to draw anime, we must observe what we see in the world and put it through a stylizer machine before we output it on canvas as a more anime version of what we saw. Fortunately, we all have a stylizer machine called the brain!

In anime, there is a spectrum of on one end, very large anime looking eyes, and some on the other end, that are pretty realistic with some stylization flare. I tend to like something in the middle, although a lot depends on the artwork itself.

You can use this guide to draw eyes and stylize to your own comfort. Check out the image right below, anime eyes drawn on the left are more stylized and the ones toward the right are more realistic.

In anime, as we move away from realism, the shape of the eye is larger and more round, and the iris itself is drawn larger as well. More realistic anime eye drawings closer follow real human anatomy, with eye shape less rounded, although still styled.

With that said, here are seven common elements present in most anime drawings of eyes.

  • Highlights from at least 2 light sources
  • Drop shadow from the upper eyelid
  • Thicker lines on the upper eyelid, stylizing eyelashes
  • Indication of the upper eyelid crease
  • Enlarged Iris
  • Adding Highlights And Finishing Touches

Finally, lets add highlights. Highlights are essential, as they give eyes a spark of life.

You can also remove highlights to imply a lack of energy.

When adding highlights, add a new layer above the line art. By drawing a highlight over the line art, the entire eye will have more depth.

This time, I added highlights to the top left.

    Thats it!

Highlights change depending on the direction of the light in the scene and direction the character is facing. Try out a few angles to see what angle works best for you.
