How to Draw Anime Eyes in Different Angles TUTORIAL

Although all anime characters have big eyes, female characters tend to have wider eyes. Their lashes are thicker and longer as well.

  • First, youll need to sketch the outer shape of the eye. To draw the upper eyelid, sketch a line that curves downward. The length of the line will influence how wide the eyes will be. Make sure the line is thick in the middle.
  • For the lower eyelid, draw a horizontal line that has a curve at the end. The line should be at the center of the upper eyelid and about half its length.
  • We need a wide gap between the two eyelids to give the female character bigger eyes. This gap should be about two-thirds the length of the upper eyelid.

  • Draw the iris. To do this, youll need to draw an oval shape from the center of the upper eyelid to the bottom eyelid.
  • Next, sketch the pupil inside the iris. This step is quite simple since youll draw a smaller shape of the iris.
  • Light reflects off the eye. Thats why were going to sketch the primary and secondary reflection in this step by using two small circles. The circles should be on opposite sides of the iris.
  • Draw a big circle at the top of the iris to indicate the main reflection area. The second circle indicates where light bounces off the eye, so it is smaller and located at the bottom. Keep in mind that the location of the circles depends on the source of the light in your drawing.

  • Were now going to add some eyelashes to the eyes. These eyelashes should be at the inner and outer corners of the eye.
  • Final Illustration And Anime Eyes

I will now show you a step by step process on how I draw a typical, quite simplified anime eye!

    Drawing the eye shap

I first drew the overall eye shape for my eye. You can see at the 2 ends I drew a few curved tips to show as eye lashes. I have the top lashes connected to part of the waterline as it goes down, this is a stylistic choice, in some styles they are not connected. The bottom eye is simply drawn with a line. It can be ommitted depending on your style.

    Adding in the iris

Here Ive drawn in an ovalish iris.

    Drawing in the pupil

I drew a heart shape for the pupil, you can add any shape you like! Circle, star, rectangle etc. The beauty of drawing anime is that its very customisable! Very commonly, you will also see a line dividing the centre of the iris.

    Drawing in the eyelids

If your character has double eyelids, simply add in 2 lines as below to indicate its presence.

    Finishing up

Add in an eyebrow and some highlights in the eye and youve just drawn an anime eye! Isnt it soo much simpler than drawing a realistic eye?

As mentioned before, the beauty of drawing in anime style is that everything can be customised to your preferences! In the next section, Ill talk about how you can do that.

Draw Your Own Anime Eyes Step

Lets now implement the common visual elements of drawing anime eyes by actually drawing one. Step by step.

No, you dont have to draw a hundred of them like I did, just draw one, get a feel for it, then decide what you want to draw next!

To me thats the great part of drawing, once a fresh canvas is in front of you, you get to decide what to do next! You feel like a ruler of your own domain or at least you should feel that way, or rather, you will feel that way once your skill level is where you are happy with it.

Okay, without further ado, lets draw anime eyes. So far we have learned eight basic parts of the eye as discussed in detail above, these are:

    • Eyelashes

By Step Instructions For Drawinganime Girl Eyes

1.Begin by drawing two curved lines. These will form the tops of the anime girl eyes.

    2. Draw another curved line beneath each of those drawn in the first step. It should meet the first line in a point on the inside of each eye, open on the other end. Then, extend short, curved lines outward from the end of each line. Connect the lines using a short, straight line, enclosing the upper eye.

    3. Allow some space beneath each eye, then draw a curved line. On one end of each line, to the outside of the eye, draw a pair of short lines.

    4. Draw a thick, curved line above each eye. These lines represent the eyebrows.

8.Add detail to the iris of the eye. Draw a curved line connecting the pupil to the iris on each side. The resulting shape should resemble two mountains, with the pupil like a rising sun between them.

    9. Draw a small oval beside each pupil to highlight the eye, and shade the upper portion of the eye.

    10. Color your anime girl eyes. Common human eye colors include brown, amber, green, hazel, grey, blue, and even violet. Of course, your anime character can sport any eye color you may dream up. Don’t forget to be creative!

Draw The Internal Details Of The Eye

The internal details of the eye must be drawn, among which the iris and the reflections of light stand out.

The iris is drawn with a smaller oval than the previous one, which must be in the direction in which the character is looking at a specific moment.

On the other hand, the drawing of the reflections of the light is very important to give realism to the eyes of the character.

These reflections are given by the lights that are close to the character, with sunlight being the most common in all the drawings.

Each light has a different intensity, so the reflections of the drawing must have different sizes. Then, the reflection is represented with ovals or small circles that must be placed in the direction of the source of light that the artist chooses.

It is also important to say that you should not exaggerate with the amount of reflexes that your characters eye will have, given that 5 reflections would be the maximum that can be placed.

Bring Your Anime Character To Life

    Anime Eye Drawing at GetDrawings

Ive been drawing anime for years just to kill time. Back in college, my school mates often asked me to do souvenir anime caricatures of themselves or their family members. Eye designs differ according to gender, age, and even characters. Well-made eyes will give a character more life, so lets move on and begin the tutorial.

Step-by-Step Guide to Shojo and Shonen Eyes

I chose to start with anime girls eyes as it is the most basic. In the case of the shojo eyes, they tend to be bigger, rounder, more colourful and expressive. The eye design seems to denote femininity and youth. The same eye design is also used for younger shonen characters or for some really androgynous bishounens.

Now to begin with, we will start with the upper eye lid.

    Drawing Different Anime Eye Expressions

The factors that determine the expression of the eyes are:

    • The position and shape of the eyebrows
    • The position of the pupils
    • The position of the eyelids

One major difference between drawing realistic eye expressions is that in anime and manga the size of the pupil can be changed to create a more dramatic expression .

Below is a breakdown of each expression.

Draw The Pupils And The Reflections

Draw the pupil in the middle of the iris.

The positions of the reflections will depend on the the position of the viewer.

There can be more than one reflection depending on how many light sources there are. In this case we have two. One for the main light source and one from a secondary light source.

For example if you are drawing a character that is standing outside on a sunny day the main reflection in the eyes could be caused by the sun while the secondary could come from the sun reflecting off of another object.

Most Important Characteristics Of The Eyes In The Anime

Before starting the drawing process it is important that you know some of the characteristics that define the design of this section of a characters face.

Knowing these characteristics will allow you to determine which design best applies to a specific character and have a basic idea for the drawing to be faster.

In essence, the eyes of an anime character are the way in which the viewer of the animation is told how a character feels in a given situation. For that, a large eye design with many internal details is used.

It can also be said that these details may be subject to change while a character changes what he is feeling having for example the size of the characters iris may change when he is happy when he is upset.

This versatility is what gives a level of realism to the expressions of the characters.

    Let’s Draw Manga Eyes

Comparing to the first drawing, this looks more like males eye. It radiates out maybe a bit of anger, and that is why the shape is rather angular. When you compare to the above simple human eye drawing youll easily notice the simplified features. And, that is what manga eyes are about.

While real human eyes contour resembles to a shell-like shape, especially the eyes of child and female this one has rather sharper angular contours, so it should fit well to a male character.

    Anime Eye Size And Shape

Masculine anime eyes are usually a little bit smaller than feminine eyes. They also have a more angular, narrow shape. The eyebrows are usually thicker and less curved than feminine anime eyes.

In the guide above, we suggest that you draw eyes from the top eyeline down to the bottom eyeline. This is recommended when first learning to draw anime because it gives you the right proportions. However once you have got the basics, you can be a bit more flexible with the eye size depending on how you want the character to look.

When drawing female characters, you can keep to similar proportions of the eyes because anime girl’s are usually seen to be more innocent and pure. But you can also draw more of a Westernised eye shape with the eyebrows being thinner and smoother, similar to manga style eyes.

However when drawing male characters, you should look to make your eyes smaller than the height of the top and bottom eyeline. Anime male eyes are usually drawn as being rougher than female anime characters because they show less emotion to be expressed, although you can use your own discretion for this.
