We covered some recommended supplies before but I think this video does a better job explaining how they work in the anime style.

Drawing Anime Hands Start With A General Shape Work General To Specific

In both method we will cover below to draw anime hands, the glove/mitten method and the simple form construction method, we will start with a very basic shape for the palm of the hand.

It is a boxy and concave shape. Check the diagram above, then try to make different hand gestures and observe your own hands as well, and observe how this shape changes from one gesture to the next.

How To Draw Anime Head & Face

The video doesnt have a voice-over which explains what is happening. However, writing and showing the process of drawing a face is clearly presented.

Beginning with the face structure and showing how to divide face helps you understand the construction required to draw anime face.

Just by learning the basic construction of the face already takes you far. Keep this if you are just starting out.

Position & Draw The Ears

Position the ears with their tops slightly below the top of the eyes and their bottoms slightly below the bottom of the nose. For this particular character the ears will be drawn slightly smaller and slightly lower down than is recommended for other character types here on AnimeOutline.

For the other placement example as well as more information on drawing ears see:

In this case most of the ears will be covered by the hair so there is not much need for drawing their inner details.

How To Color Anime Eyes

Step By Step Drawing Anime Faces at GetDrawings

Here you can see the results from using different colors and blending modes. I used the Overlay mode for purple, Vivid Light for yellow, and Pin Light for the blue tones and the pink details. They blend great with the grey layer.

The key is to know where you want to place the grey gradients, the darker areas, and the highlights. Please go back to chapter 4. Styles and greyscale when in doubt.

Try different colors and see which ones are best for the effect youre trying to achieve. In this illustration, I chose two complimentary colors: purple and yellow with pink and blue tints.

Grayscale coloring steps:

In 1, I simply started with the previously created grayscale drawing.

In steps 2 and 3, choose any color you fancy purple, with some blue in my case and try a blending mode that blends well with the greyscale.

In steps 4 and 5, I add some yellow using the Vivid light blending mode.

In step 6, I usually soften the dots a bit, by using the eraser or decreasing the layer opacity.

Finally, in step 7, I just add the finishing touches to emphasize volumes and textures.

Mapping The Face For Anime & Manga

This tutorial explains how you draw face and head from different angles. Might require some previous knowledge on how to draw an anime face. So if you didnt watch the previous video yet. Do start from there.

This video is more advanced and shows you how you can draw the face from any angle if you apply the knowledge creatively. The examples are easy to follow and shows you how to approach when drawing eyes and other features in different angles.

Though Mikey is using traditional methods, the results are just damn impressive. Easy to learn but may be hard to master.

Drawing An Anime Head And Face

  • 1Draw an oval and divide it into 4 sections. This will be the basic outline of your anime characters head. The proportions dont have to be exact, but make the oval narrower at the bottom since that will be the chin. Once youve drawn the oval, draw a horizontal line through the center of it. Then, draw a vertical line through the center of it that intersects with the horizontal line. Later, you’ll use these lines as guides to draw the facial features.XResearch source
  • If you want your character to have a wider face, widen the bottom of the oval so its just slightly narrower than the top. Or, if you want your character to have a slender face, make the bottom of the oval even narrower than the top. There’s no single head shape used for all anime characters, so you can experiment until you find one you like.
  • 3Sketch the eyebrows above the horizontal line. Draw a long, downward curving line for each eyebrow. Make them slightly longer than the upper lash line you drew for the eyes. Then, thicken the ends of the brows that are at the center of the face.XResearch source
  • If youre drawing a feminine anime character, make the eyebrows fairly thin. For a masculine character, thicken the eyebrows so theyre more prominent on the face.
  • Make the nose the smallest feature on your characters face.
  • The nose will overlap with the vertical line you drew. To see it better, make it darker than the vertical line, or erase the vertical line around the nose.

Draw The Head Of The Cute Anime Girl

Cute-looking anime characters usually have a larger head and forehead with a smaller chin.

For the front view, start by drawing an oval for the top of the head and adding the lower half of the face. The lower part of the face narrows significantly as it goes down.

For the side view again, lets start with the oval of the top of the head, drawing the nose / jaw area. Leave the details like lips for the following steps.

At this stage, it is only necessary to estimate the position of the nose for the side view .

    Shade & Finish The Drawing

Easy drawing | how to draw anime girl easy step-by-step

For some very basic shading you can add shadows in the most common places. In this case they will be as follows:

    • Tiny shadows around the eyelids
    • Small shadows below the eyelashes
    • Very tiny shadow to one side of the nose
    • Fully shaded ears
    • Large shadow on the neck in the shape o the chin
    • Fully shaded inner part of the hair between the head/neck and the side hair

As mentioned earlier you can also add some hair highlights as sort of white zigzag lines across the hair. As suggested earlier you can simply leave this area white and then color around it. Alternatively you can use a white correction pen to add them in over top or do it digitally.

    Degrees Of Realism And Stylization

How To Draw Anime Faces Step By Step

In anime and manga, eyes are drawn in various degrees of stylization. Human anatomy in anime is stylized often to the point of being unrealistic, yet still very recognizable as the anime counterpart of the real world person the artwork is describing.

This is an important point. This means that if we are to draw anime, we must observe what we see in the world and put it through a stylizer machine before we output it on canvas as a more anime version of what we saw. Fortunately, we all have a stylizer machine called the brain!

In anime, there is a spectrum of on one end, very large anime looking eyes, and some on the other end, that are pretty realistic with some stylization flare. I tend to like something in the middle, although a lot depends on the artwork itself.

You can use this guide to draw eyes and stylize to your own comfort. Check out the image right below, anime eyes drawn on the left are more stylized and the ones toward the right are more realistic.

In anime, as we move away from realism, the shape of the eye is larger and more round, and the iris itself is drawn larger as well. More realistic anime eye drawings closer follow real human anatomy, with eye shape less rounded, although still styled.

With that said, here are seven common elements present in most anime drawings of eyes.

  • Highlights from at least 2 light sources
  • Drop shadow from the upper eyelid
  • Thicker lines on the upper eyelid, stylizing eyelashes
  • Indication of the upper eyelid crease
  • Enlarged Iris

Cleaning Up And Finishing The Drawing

  • 1Erase the guidelines to clean up your drawing. Use either the eraser on your pencil or a block eraser to lift up any guide lines that arent a part of the characters face or head. Carefully work around any of the facial features youve drawn so you dont erase their lines too much. Continue erasing the rest of the guides on your drawing until all thats left is the face.XResearch source
  • If you drew your guide lines too dark, then they may not fully erase off of the paper.
  • Use a thin eraser to get in detailed areas, like the eyes or ears.
  • 2Give your character a fun hairstyle. Anime and manga characters can have a variety of hairstyles, so choose one that you think will look best on your character. Avoid drawing every single strand of hair and instead sketch the basic shape of the style onto your character. Work lightly in pencil so you can erase and make changes if you need to. Once you have a roughed-in shape for the hairstyle, erase any parts of the head that the hair covers so its not visible.XResearch source
  • Anime or manga hair is usually broken up into clumps that end in a point. Look at hairstyles of various characters to get ideas of how to style your characters hair.
  • Tip: Practice drawing different hairstyles on a piece of tracing paper over your drawing so you dont have to erase your character if you dont like the style you drew.

  • You dont have to add any additional details to your character if you dont want to.
  • Add Shading To The Takoyaki

Finally you can also add some shadows to the Takoyaki . Create thin strips of shading running along the bottom of the sauce as well as some shading along the bottom of the Takoyaki balls. You can also even add some very tiny shadows to some of the flakes depending on how large you draw them.

You can see a larger drawing of one of the Takoyaki balls above to make it easier for you to see the shadows.

    Drawing Anime Hands Proportions

easy anime drawing | how to draw anime boy step-by-step easy

If youre familiar with my tutorials, you know that I am not a big proponent of learning exact proportions for everything. Proportions will change depending on what you want to draw. Proportions change given the perspective and foreshortening of the subject. Over time you must learn to gauge proportions and correct based on what you are drawing. However, there are a couple of rules that are very helpful in drawing the hand and we can use them for drawing anime hands.

Draw An Outline Of The Plate

Finally add the outline of the plate the cake will be sitting on. At the angle the plate is drawn on it will appear as an oval.

The top of this oval should be slightly flattened compared to the bottom. This means that if you divide the plate in half horizontally the top part should be narrower than the bottom.

The reason for drawing this way is to show perspective which makes objects seem smaller as they go off into the distance. As the upper part of the plate is farther away from the viewer it will appear smaller.

You can again see the perspective tutorial linked earlier for more on this.

    How To Draw Anime Hair

Pin by Billy Tamplin on Character Design

Anime characters usually have hair that is out of this world. Full of imagination and awe. And from that point of view, you can let your creativity flow free as the hair you are about to draw.

There are only a few rules to keep in mind, and these tutorials will show you more about those. The key thing is to have fun and really develop a personality for your character through hair.

Start with the basic shapes, and move to the details. This way you can better see the volume and personality of the hair before moving on to the details. As you start to draw the details for the hair, its harder to go back and fix things. So do nail down the form first and details only at the last stage.

How To Draw Anime And Manga Eyes

If theres something special in anime, its the eyes. You could argue that cartoon and western comic style also has and uses big eyes. However, the difference lies in that anime and manga eyes present the iris usually as an oval in shape, or the iris is enormous compared to the rest of the eye.

Anime eyes have a lot of personality in them and are the thing people search for first. First, its the head, then its the eyes. And especially the expression those eyes have.

One thing anime eyes do give you is a lot of creative freedom. You can draw eyes in various ways and still make them look believable.

So what defines, manga and anime eyes? They are large, shiny, the iris can be oval in shape. The eyes can be close to reality but either the eyelashes, eye-socket or other part is anime or manga like and thus creates this unreal looking eye but still so beautiful to watch. The eyes shape would break the human skull if it were real. Then again, manga and anime do not know reality in that sense.

So there are two types of eyes, one being continuous. Where the eyelids do connect. The other style being non-continuous, meaning that the eyelids are disconnected and thus break human eye anatomy completely. The continuous-style is trying to hold on the human anatomy, though only barely.

Size really matters with these styles and can be said that where continuous style is no longer looking aesthetically pleasing, it is time to make it non-continuous.
