The premise of Do You Love Your Mom is classic isekai fare. A teenage boy gets transported into a video game, but theres a catch his mom came along too. Oh yeah, and shes more powerful than him. Shes not going to be idling on the sidelines.
Its particularly mind-blowing for an isekai to subvert the expectations for the role of mothers because Missing Mom Syndrome is almost a core part of the isekai genre by design. Its kind of hard to have a mom or any parent around when the entire premise of the genre is to have a character unexpectedly sucked into another world, usually all on their lonesome to go on a life-changing adventure. Isekai is about escapism, which includes escaping from family responsibilities, not to mention family itself. The genre fills an understandable and necessary desire, but that also makes this particular subversion within the genre much more impactful.
Oh, and all of this isnt portrayed in a sympathetic light. We have no indication that the protagonists mother is anything but kind to him. The kid is bratty and immature, and he only gets worse after learning that his mom, Mamako, is coming on the adventure with him.

Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?, also simply referred to as Okaa-san Online, is a Japanese light novel series written by Dachima Inaka and illustrated by Pochi Iida. It was published by Fujimi Shobo under its Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint from January 2017 to April 2020 for a total of eleven volumes. The story focuses on teenager Masato Oosuki’s relationship with his mother Mamako as they are both transported to a fantasy world within an online game.
A manga adaptation by Meicha was serialized in Kadokawa Shoten‘s digital manga magazine Young Ace Up from September 2017 to January 2021. Both the light novel and manga are licensed in North America by Yen Press. A RPGbrowser game based on the series was released in April 2017. An anime television series adaptation by J.C.Staff aired from July to September 2019, with an original video animation episode released in March 2020, the same month a collaborative study book was launched. The anime is licensed in North America by Aniplex of America.

Okaasan Online Manga/light Novels Compared To The Anime
The story for the anime series is based on the Tsuujou Kougeki ga Zentai Kougeki de Ni-kai Kougeki no Okaasan wa Suki Desu ka? light novel series by writer Dachima Inaka and illustrator Pochi Iida. The title is commonly shortened to Okaasan Online by fans.
Started in 2017, the book series is up to Volume 12 as of April 17, 2020. The final book in the series contains an ending story focused on Masatos father.
Yen Press is publishing the official English translation of the book series. Up to Volume 7, by November 2020, Volume 8 is scheduled to release on February 23, 2021.
The Do You Love Your Mom manga adaptation is being drawn by manga artist Meicha. The manga is up to Volume 4 as of July 3, 2020. An English translation of the manga adaptation has not yet been announced.
The pacing of the anime series was average for a light novel adaptation. As per usual, certain details were condensed and the anime skimmed over the books.

This Is A Fantasy For Young Men
To top this all off, later in the first episode the kid gets into an argument directly with his mom thats direct commentary on the genre. He first crucially words the argument in a way that boils down to him being mad about her having powerful magic, outshining him and her being there only because shes his mom. Mamako replies with, other mothers sometimes get sent inside video games with their sons, which we as an audience know is not true. The kid knows this too, and he follows that up with threatening to disown her if she doesnt tell him why shes there, causing her to cry. At one point during this argument he even straight up says this is a fantasy for young men, theres no room for parents here! The fourth wall ceases to exist and the kids point is clear.
Yet it doesnt have to be this way, and the anime ultimately says so when the kid realizes his mistake and apologizes to his mother. The two then agree to go on the adventure together. As ridiculously simple as this writing choice is, its almost revolutionary.
How can you say no to this?
Moms are people. They can be embarrassing, they can make mistakes, and yet media often seems to forget that they can play a role other than a woman in the refrigerator or doing nothing but waiting for her kid to come home. Its time for anime to stop being dismissive of mothers and let them shine more often, two-hit multi-target attacks and all.

Its understandable that some anime and video-game media attempt to create a space for kids to take a break from their real-life parents . Even in magical girl anime where the mother is often alive and present, she is still often conveniently unaware of what her daughter is up to. This means the magical girl can fight as many monsters as she wants without her mom telling her no.
But what if the mom didnt say no? Why dont we let parents help their kids more often?
Do we need to take so much of a break from moms that we overlook so many possible unique character dynamics, stunting our own creativity as well as making Mamako sad?
In any case, Mamakos son, while not terrible, is indeed portrayed as just bratty enough to elicit the annoyance necessary from viewers to make that point. Among the comments on the first episode on VRV, about the second most common kind of statement seemed to be about how mean the main character is to his mom. Anime fans are outraged at an anime dude treating his mom like crap thats a good thing.

The first season ended with Episode 12. Do You Love Your Mom Episode 13 was unaired. Instead, the Do You Love Your Mom OVA episode was bundled with Volume 6 of the Blu-Ray box set, released on March 25, 2020.
