How To Draw Better Anime Bodies

What Brush Should I Use

[TUTORIAL] How to draw bodies for anime. (Male anatomy).

Obviously, there are millions of digital brushes, and each one has a different function, so there is no correct answer to this question. I could say It depends on what you want to do but thats not good enough, right? The good thing is that they all share more or less the same configuration panel. Lets take a look at a couple of basic Clip Studio Paint brushes: the Darker Pencil and the G-Pen.

* Brush Size: The thickness of the line varies depending on the size of the brush and the pressure we exert on the pen of our graphics tablet. Maximum size, thickness with the minimum pressure.

* Hardness / Anti-aliasing: This softens the edges. You can see how it affects the strokes in both cases. Hardness / Anti-aliasing.

* Density / Opacity: With less density or opacity the lines become more transparent. Here I increased the density progressively until we get to 100%.

* Stabilization: This bar is a life-saver! It makes small adjustments in the line to avoid shakiness, so it is great for when you want to make long and uninterrupted lines you only have to increase or decrease the value as much as you need. 0 stability, 10 stability.

The Shaft Angle Or Shafuto Kakudo

The Shaft Angle is a technique in which the animator makes the character tilt their head at a certain angle. This, of course, was pioneered by Studio Shaft, hence the name. You can find it employed in a ton of anime, especially by Studio Shaft titles like Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Do Recreate What You See On The Page

Observational skills are important but not just for copying what you see. Use your observational skills to analyze your subjects unique shapes so you can reinterpret it on the page. That means you arent copying counters of the body. Instead youre recreating a figure on the page from the ground up.

You start by capturing its movement in a gesture, rebuild the figure three-dimensionally using basic spheres, boxes and cylinders, and then sculpt those simple shapes into anatomical forms. This is a very different process than just replicating what you see.

Youre combining what you see with your 3D knowledge of anatomy to recreate the figure on the page. This will not only help you to develop drawing that have a sense of mass but also will allow you to adapt and modify the figure to create something new.

This is just a fun drawing to help illustrate that you need to understand the 3D shapes of a figure and then you can reassemble them on the page. This is a different way of thinking than just copying the contours you see.

    The Takeaway:

The job of an artist isnt to replicate what he or she sees. It is to interpret what he or she understands. When drawing a figure, you bring in your knowledge of anatomy and volume to draw a figure rather than just copying contours and values.

A challenge for any artist is to draw the human body and understand its anatomy. Take it as a game because sometimes it can become challenging if you dont have fun. When you learn all the rules and really get good you will be amazed at the things you can do by just knowing the anatomy.

One difference that comes with learning how to draw poses is that you basically define the character without adding all the details. This is why you need to understand this first before you move to the details part like muscles.

Dont Compare Yourself To The Masters

Another very common beginners mistake. You can compare your drawing to other drawings from a good artist but don´t discourage yourself.

So often I see beginners artists that finish a drawing and then ook up their favorite artist online and compare it line by line. Just to say, that their drawing sucks and they have to learn more and try harder etc.. This behavior will not help you and it will discourage you more than motivate you.

So look at your drawings and constructively think, what you could have done better and also what you did well on that drawing.

How To Draw Anime And Manga Eyes

[ibisPaint x] How to Draw Bodies for Manga and Anime [Tutorial]

If theres something special in anime, its the eyes. You could argue that cartoon and western comic style also has and uses big eyes. However, the difference lies in that anime and manga eyes present the iris usually as an oval in shape, or the iris is enormous compared to the rest of the eye.

Anime eyes have a lot of personality in them and are the thing people search for first. First, its the head, then its the eyes. And especially the expression those eyes have.

One thing anime eyes do give you is a lot of creative freedom. You can draw eyes in various ways and still make them look believable.

So what defines, manga and anime eyes? They are large, shiny, the iris can be oval in shape. The eyes can be close to reality but either the eyelashes, eye-socket or other part is anime or manga like and thus creates this unreal looking eye but still so beautiful to watch. The eyes shape would break the human skull if it were real. Then again, manga and anime do not know reality in that sense.

So there are two types of eyes, one being continuous. Where the eyelids do connect. The other style being non-continuous, meaning that the eyelids are disconnected and thus break human eye anatomy completely. The continuous-style is trying to hold on the human anatomy, though only barely.

Size really matters with these styles and can be said that where continuous style is no longer looking aesthetically pleasing, it is time to make it non-continuous.

Draw The Body Of Your Manga Character

3.1 Rules of proportion for human bodies

When you draw a manga figure, the correct proportions are essential. Just like normal body proportions in realistic drawing, manga figures are about 7.5 heads high.

Superheroes in manga style have even longer proportions and are usually 8 heads tall, often even larger. The comparatively small head increases the dramatic effect of a low viewing angle in the hero posture.

Otherwise, the body proportions are pretty standard: The shoulder to elbow is about the same length as the elbow to the wrist. The same applies to the distance from hip to knee and knee to ankle.

    • More detailed information about human proportions and the differences between female and male anatomy can be found in the this article.

    3.2 Drawing clothes

The most important thing to consider when drawing clothes or any kind of fabric is the direction in which the material is being pulled. Creases are caused wherever the fabric is stretched or torn. Find out how exactly the structure of the fabric should move, and the rest is quite simple if you have mastered the necessary shading techniques.

Always think of the figure underneath the clothes. The fabric should reflect the shape of the character underneath.
