Time It Takes To Draw A Simple Chibi Anime Character

How to draw in a basic anime style

This chibi drawing took me 30 minutes to complete, and there are various reasons why it was so fast. They will be listed below:

  • I drew this chibi on a small scale, so things like shading and outlining were pretty fast to do.
  • The complexity of the drawing isnt that high. Its something someone with four months of experience drawing anime could achieve to do.
  • Im not an expert anime drawing artist, but I already have some experience drawing anime, so it was easier for me to draw the chibi in general.
  • Lets move onto something a bit more complex.

    Section 21 Drawing Manga Eyes

There are probably hundreds of different styles you can use for eyes, but we will just go over some of the basics. For obvious reasons, male eyes differ greatly from female eyes, just as evil eyes look much different than good guy eyes. We could spend hours going over every single nuance, so for this tutorial, well keep it simple.

If youre interested this quora anwser is a reasonably comprehensive explanation of what different aspects of eyes could mean when drawing your Manga.

Lets start off with a basic female manga eye first. Start by drawing a curved line where the top of the eyelid and the eyelashes will sit. From here you will want to draw a large oval shape underneath, roughly the same width and the first line you made. Leave one side of the oval open .

Now you should have something that is starting to resemble an eye. If for whatever reason you arent happy with it thus far, just gently erase and start again. This is why you are pressing so lightly with the pencil. When the inking starts, theres no going back.

Inside this first oval, youll want to draw another smaller oval that is slightly overlapped on the top by the eyelashes. Then, draw yet another oval around pupil to represent the iris . If youre tired of drawing ovals, too bad There are more coming.

This next part is something very common among manga and anime .

    Light reflections.

For the interested, these reflections are called catchlights in both film and photography.

Draw Your Own Anime Eyes Step

Lets now implement the common visual elements of drawing anime eyes by actually drawing one. Step by step.

No, you dont have to draw a hundred of them like I did, just draw one, get a feel for it, then decide what you want to draw next!

To me thats the great part of drawing, once a fresh canvas is in front of you, you get to decide what to do next! You feel like a ruler of your own domain or at least you should feel that way, or rather, you will feel that way once your skill level is where you are happy with it.

Okay, without further ado, lets draw anime eyes. So far we have learned eight basic parts of the eye as discussed in detail above, these are:

    Drawing Tablet Without A Screen

When I first started drawing digitally, I chose a tablet that didnt have a display/ drawing screen. My choice for the time was Wacom Bamboo. I drew with it a bit until I noticed that I didnt feel the disconnection of hand and eye.

When you dont have a screen, you have to look at the monitor while you are drawing to the tablet.

Currently, the best drawing tablet without a screen is the Intuos series by Wacom.

Brainstorm Your Character And Build A Concept For Their Pose

You character brainstorming can take many forms, including finding references, inspiration, and getting to know about your character. The more you know the character the better you will be able to represent them visually. This is one reason that it can be much easier to get started with drawing fan art than drawing original characters. Those that you represent in fan art already have a story, posture, and style that you can draw from. If you intend to make an original character, you’ll have to make choices about all these character traits.

    • What’s your character’s posture like? Fitness level, and overall style?
    • Do they perfectly fix their hair in the morning or is it slightly messy?
    • What kind of clothes do they wear?
    • What are they normally doing? It’s a good idea to portray the character in the act of doing something that most defines them.

    Drawing Tablet With A Screen/display

Drawing tablet with a screen enables you to draw directly to the screen. So the drawing experience is as close to drawing a traditional paper as it can.

After experiencing a lot of frustrating drawing moments with the Wacom Bamboo, I bought myself a new drawing tablet, Wacom Cintiq 12WX. It was a game-changer for me and for the next 10 or so years.

In 2020, I bought a new drawing tablet, and this time I decided to buy the best you can buy in the market. Wacom Cintiq 24 Pro. I can only say that this drawing tablet has given me the best drawing experience ever.

While the tablet that I bought is one of the most expensive drawing tablets on the market, it is also the best. And when you get the best, you know that hardware is not the bottleneck.

If, however, you are just starting out, getting the most expensive drawing tablet might not be the best thing to do. So the second-best would be XP-PEN Artist 24 Pro. It costs roughly half of the Wacom but delivers exceptional performance and results.

Outline The Shapes To Create A Skin Layer

For most manga art, clean outlines are very important. It’s a good idea now to create an outline that makes your skin layer. This is not your final outline or final detail layer. It is there for reference to summarize all the work and anatomy that you have created so far.

The skin layer will clean up your sketch and give you a basic shape on which to draw details in the next steps. Try as much as you can to preserve the three-dimensional look that you created in the wireframe.

Learn How To Shade Anime Drawings

Shading can make two-dimensional objects look three dimensional. Proper shading will need some study and thought.

Youll have to see where the light reflects off of different objects in different lighting conditions. Environment, time of day, light source, and whether all affect how shading will look.

Like with perspective drawing, practice this by drawing simple objects and practicing shading techniques. Youll begin to get an almost intuitive sense of how shading works.

Drawing An Anime Head And Face

  • 1Draw an oval and divide it into 4 sections. This will be the basic outline of your anime characters head. The proportions dont have to be exact, but make the oval narrower at the bottom since that will be the chin. Once youve drawn the oval, draw a horizontal line through the center of it. Then, draw a vertical line through the center of it that intersects with the horizontal line. Later, you’ll use these lines as guides to draw the facial features.XResearch source
  • If you want your character to have a wider face, widen the bottom of the oval so its just slightly narrower than the top. Or, if you want your character to have a slender face, make the bottom of the oval even narrower than the top. There’s no single head shape used for all anime characters, so you can experiment until you find one you like.
  • 3Sketch the eyebrows above the horizontal line. Draw a long, downward curving line for each eyebrow. Make them slightly longer than the upper lash line you drew for the eyes. Then, thicken the ends of the brows that are at the center of the face.XResearch source
  • If youre drawing a feminine anime character, make the eyebrows fairly thin. For a masculine character, thicken the eyebrows so theyre more prominent on the face.
  • Make the nose the smallest feature on your characters face.
  • The nose will overlap with the vertical line you drew. To see it better, make it darker than the vertical line, or erase the vertical line around the nose.

    Top And Bottom Lash Lines

I started with the basic model of the head. It’s not that realistic to show a perfectly symmetrical face, since we so rarely see people that way. So I made the head slightly turned. If you get in the habit of introducing asymmetry, your work will look more life-like.

So, first, I got the lower line based on where the circle representing the skull meets with the lower curved V line representing the jaw. This point, the top of your jaw, is the bottom of your ear. And your eyes are level with your ears. Then, you get to decide where to put the top lines. Drawing a line across makes the eyes come out at the same height, so they look proportionate to each other.

I drew the dark bottom and top lash lines. In manga style, the top line is longer, and they usually don’t connect. That’s the kind of eyes I’m drawing for this tutorial. However, if you want a connected eye or a specific eye shape, you can draw that shape at this step.

The purpose of this step is to define the boundaries of the shape of the eyes. I drew only a basic indication of the lashes, we’ll worry about lash details later.

Learn How To Color Anime Drawings

Effective use of color is quite simple, really: simply apply what you know about the color wheel.

Warm colors, cool colors, contrasting colorsexperiment with them to get the effects you want. Warm colors convey heat, danger, and passion. They tend to be very dramatic.

Cool colors are calmer and often used for water or ice. However, depending on whats around them, the feeling can change.

Contrasting colors, for instance, always draw the eye. Always be mindful of anyone who might be viewing your art and what mood or action you want to convey.
