As an animation fanatic, I tend to watch quite a bit of anime. Basically, a subbed anime has everything the Japanese version has, with the exception of subtitles in English. By contrast, a dub is the Japanese version translated to English, with English voice acting and, in some cases, edits to the animation and music.

But, this can mean changing the entire meaning of the show and the personalities of some of its most important characters. Dragon Ball Z is the best example of how things can be completely different when the language of the show changes. In the dubbed version of Dragon Ball Z, Goku sounds like a grown man with a deep voice. The way he acts can simply be seen as being a playful father. But, in the Japanese version of the anime, Goku sounds like a child. This was obviously a character choice by the creators of the show. His voice gives us a completely different perspective on how we view Goku as a character. It is not that he is simply a playful father he is actually a kid. And that is why he shuns his responsibilities and would rather train than do work. He is exactly like his children.

It still remains a preferential thing. Because I grew up watching Dragon Ball Z and Rurouni Kenshin as dubbed anime, I cannot imagine watching the show in any other way. But, there is a certain ere of authenticity when the show is in its native language. Changing the language just to make it easier on viewers who do not understand the native language can seem like a cop-out at times. But, try the different methods and decide which one you like better. But, just know that you do miss out on something when choosing to stick to dubbed anime.

Better Dubbed: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Next up we have Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The series follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric as they seek to find the philosopher’s stone so they can restore their bodies back to normal.

The series’ setting is part of the reasons why we think this anime worked better dubbed the country of Amestris, was inspired by industrial Europe, so hearing these characters speak English fits very, very well. Not that the characters can’t speak Japanese, it is a fantasy world after all, but the dub cast really brought their A-game, making for the, in our opinion, superior version of the series.

Purists And The Case For Subtitled Anime

Anime fans who exclusively watch the subtitled versions of anime, even when a dub is available, are often referred to as purists. Purists are usually diehard anime fans, or otaku. One of the main reasons that purists give for preferring subs is that subtitles allow them to experience the anime the way the creators meant for it to be seen. These fans view anime as an artform, and do not believe that it should be altered in any way. Some anime is censored or otherwise changed for the English release.

Many anime series, particularly older series, were censored for the English dub. American licensors often deemed certain types of content to be inappropriate for western audiences, so they changed certain things for the English dub. A classic example of this can be seen in the original English dub of Sailor Moon. In the first English dub of this series, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune were portrayed as cousins, while in the original Japanese version, these two characters were lesbian lovers. This was corrected in the more recent redub of the original Sailor Moon.

Many anime fans also claim that the voice acting is almost always better in the original Japanese version. This is debatable, as many of the people who make this claim do not actually understand Japanese. Many fans of dubbed anime claim that studios have been doing a better job at casting voice actors in recent years, however.

Why Does Anime Use Filler

Typically, filler is used when an anime catches up with the manga it’s based on. Many anime are created and aired while the manga is still being written. But a lot of times, the anime is finished faster than the volumes of its manga, and filler is then used to give the manga time to catch up.

Having said that, some anime avoid filler altogether. The anime for Black Clover caught up with the manga and ended in March 2021. Instead of filler, it announced a movie to give creator Yki Tabata more time to write.

Sometimes though, what seems like filler is more of a difference in creative direction. Consider the anime Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Fullmetal Alchemist is the original anime and there are tons of elements that were done differently than in the manga. But all of the elements are pretty important to the overall plot line of Fullmetal Alchemist, and missing just one of them is more than likely going to mean missing out on something that advances the plot of the series, even if it’s not in the manga.

The Advantages Of Subbed Anime

Hardcore anime fans will almost always choose subbing over dubbing. Some of these fans take their passion for anime a little too far, and are deemed purists.

If you dont know already, anime purists only watch anime thats been subtitled. They believe that dubbing makes an anime lose character, as some nuances or phrases might get changed during the translation process.

While that does hold some truth, I still dont think its enough to invalidate dubbing.

When watching a subbed anime, youll hear cultural implications that youll miss out on in dubbed anime.

For example, dubbed anime usually dont include the honorifics that can help you identify a characters social status. Youll often hear san following a characters name, which is close to Mr,Ms, or Mrs in English.

However, some honorifics like kun and chan dont have English equivalents. In this case, the honorifics meaning usually gets erased or changed during the process of dubbing.

Many people prefer subbing because of the fact that it hasnt undergone any major changes. Subs keep the tone of the story the same and also include censored content. Unfortunately, some dubbed shows actually change the dialogue to make it more appropriate for a general audience.

In the 4KIDS dubbed version of Pokemon, youll find many instances of censorship starting all the way at the beginning of the show. Any references to religion, violence, or profanity were removed in the dubbed version.

Some anime fans always prefer to watch anime subbed, while others prefer dubbed anime when it is available. Both sides have different reasons behind their preferences, and this debate often turns into a heated argument amongst anime fans.

A more important discussion that often gets overlooked, is the hard work that goes behind subtitling and dubbing anime series.

To dig deeper on this, I asked Ariel Sanders and Pal Hollywood, they are both professionals and anime fans and they kindly shared their take on this topic with me.

What I can say, having studied film, is that using subtitles is definitely a lot easier to do from a post-production standpoint and in some cases can be more aesthetically pleasing or stylistically correct .

The added benefit of subtitles is that they dont detract from the original emotional tone or emphasis that the actor used during the original take. This is imperative for visual media as the sound, level and tone of persons voice does a lot to indicate their emotions at the time of delivery.

In some cases, such as with anime, there are just some things that sound better in Japanese or simply cannot be said in English unless theyre described in length hence most of the lengthy monologues that are found in anime. Phrases like Yugen and Shouganai dont have English translations and would have to be explained in full for them to make sense to an English speaker.

However, some may find subtitles to be hassle and would rather spend their time watching the show than reading every line of dialogue simultaneously. In this case, a dub is probably the best option for you as you can appreciate the visual and audio aspects of the series comfortably.

Whats The Difference Between Dubbed And Subbed Anime

Anime comes in two formats: Dubbed and subbed. Subbed plays the original Japanese vocal track for the show or movie youre watching with English subtitles. Dubbed, on the other hand, features an English-speaking cast of voice-over actors working from a translated script. There are advantages to both formats.

Hearing the dialogue in English allows for a more immersive anime-watching experience.

Some anime dubs change the script quite a bit from the original Japanese version. In some cases, many fans prefer the completely different take on the show presented by the dub. For example, the dubbed version of the anime Ghost Stories alters the original script to a more comedic one written by ADV screenwriter Steven Foster. Much of the final recording for this dub was ad-libbed by the voice actors. While the plot of the show is still similar to the original version, the script is much more comedic and offensive in the English dub, which many fans of this anime prefer.

On the other hand, a far less common reason that some anime viewers give for preferring dubs to subs is, in fact, the censorship. Some fans actually claim to prefer the dubbed versions of certain series better than the original because the “mature” content present in the original Japanese version was removed. This is an extremely rare reason for preferring dubs, however.
