Puella Magi Madoka Magica doesnt feel like a thriller at first. However, it definitely makes its intentions known after the first few episodes. The show focuses around a group of magical girls who trade a lifetime of servitude for one wish. This presents a lot of obvious problems that very strongly bother the titular character Madoka. The series is actually quite old, but still definitely holds up by todays standards. A second iteration of the show, Magia Record, launched in 2020 along with an accompanying mobile game of the same name. This is one of the seminal anime on Crunchyroll. Its one of the must-watch shows on the platform.
Fruits Basket Season 2
We’d be remiss to not also recommend Fruits Basket Season 2, which marks the return of the popular 2019 reboot about the high school orphan, Tohru Honda, who begins living with the mysterious Sohma family, some of whom are possessed by the spirits of the Chinese zodiac. When touched by a member of the opposite sex or when under stress, these cursed members transform into the animal that possesses them. At Season 1’s conclusion, Fruits Basket had already begun to delve into the tragedy and abuse surrounding the cursed members of the Sohma family–a story thread which should come to a head in the events seen in Season 2. I picked this anime because I do enjoy the isekia genre and it had The Time I Reincarnated as a Slime vibes. This is your typical isekia adventure story with a light-hearted atmosphere with hints of dark humor. The series does start off a bit slow but gradually picks up pace. This makes the series come together for me. Unlike other isekia animes, we have a main character who is overpowered really fast. This series has makes you grind for the level up. Making it more relatable to an RPGs. The characters are charismatic and likeable. The art style a good mix of CGI in it. I know CGI has a bad reputation and it turns people away. However, this series does a great job of blending both. This is a series that once you watch it, you get hooked.
Captain Harlock: Arcadia Of My Youth
Captain Harlock: Arcadia of My Youth is a 1982 film that retells the origins of Captain Harlock. Leiji Matsumoto created the character as well as other notable series such as Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999.
The plot follows Captain Harlock, a man who was blacklisted because he rebelled against the government by not giving up hope against invaders. Over the course of the film, it shows his fight against Earth’s oppressors, the Mazone, who wish to reclaim Earth back when they used to rule over it in ancient times. This is the perfect movie for those wishing to enjoy a classic 90s anime.
