In a statement, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio noted that a visitor to the festival who returned home to Minnesota had tested positive for the latest variant. That persons symptoms were mild and have since resolved, the mayor said.
The 53,000 people who attended the convention at New York Citys Jacob K. Javits Convention Center home to the annual New York Auto Show and New York Comic Con, among others are being urged to get tested immediately.
We are working closely with the State and the CDC, as well as the Javits Centers event organizers, and our Test and Trace Corps will be contacting conference attendees, De Blasios statement said.
As part of his controversial Key2NYC program, everyone attending the event or basically any other event in the Big Apple had to be masked and double vaccinated.
Incidentally, Peter Tatara, the founder of AnimeNYC, recently sent an apology to guests for long lines and crowded conditions at the event. Everything was packed much, much more, he said. Could Animenyc Be A Superspreader Event
Bleeding Cool reported on one of the first identified Omicron cornonavirus victims being an attendee of AnimeNYC at the Javitz Center in New York City. But now the New York Times reports that about fifteen people of a group of thirty who attended the show with the infected man have also tested positive for coronavirus. Which has raised concerns that AnimeNYC might be a sueprspreader event. Governor Ned Lamont stated yesterday that Connecticut’s first case, a man in his 60s, was from a relative of the infected man.
The official AnimeNYC account tweeted the following “The Anime NYC team was notified today that one of this year’s attendees tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, the attendee developed mild symptoms on November 22, was tested on November 24, and their symptoms have since resolved. We’re actively working with officials from the New York City Department of Health, who are coordinating with various state agencies, and all participants who ordered badges online, as well as exhibitors, artists, and partners. All attendees should receive an email or call from the NYC Test and Trace Corps or their local health departments with further information and recommended next steps. You are strongly advised to get tested. We thank our partners in New York City for their tremendous assistance and guidance both today and in the lead up to Anime NYC.”

The Nyc Event Reportedly Struggled With Crowding And Had Weak Vaccination Rules

US health officials have identified a second case of the omicron coronavirus variant in a Minnesota man, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday. Unlike the first case, the man had not traveled internationally but had recently returned home to Minnesota from an anime convention in New York City attended by 53,000 people.
The case suggests that there is domestic transmission of the worrisome variant and that it has been circulating in the US undetected until now.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health and the CDC, the man is a resident of Hennepin County and traveled to New York City to attend the Anime NYC 2021 convention at the Javits Center from November 19 to 21. The man had been vaccinated. He developed mild symptoms on November 22 and sought COVID-19 testing on November 24. He has since recovered from the infection.
It’s particularly concerning that the resident attended the large convention, which may have been ideal for SARS-CoV-2 spread. In a tweet on November 30, Anime NYC President Peter Tatara reported that 53,000 fans attended the event this year and that the convention struggled with “challenges with crowding.”
“Everything was packed much, much more” compared with previous years, Tatara reported. “Why? We underestimated how many fans would come early and spend every moment of the weekend in the convention center.”

New Covid Outbreak At Scandal
The New Jersey Department of Health said the man had been fully vaccinated — even recently had his booster shot — and only experienced mild symptoms of COVID-19. He was also not hospitalized and has already recovered, according to the department of health’s Friday announcement.
The second case of the variant for New Jersey comes on the same day nearby Connecticut leaders announced an additional nine confirmed positives, bringing that state’s total to 11.
There are now a total of 25 states across the U.S. with confirmed cases of the omicron variant, thanks to positive detections in Texas, Georgia, Louisiana and Florida. The new variant cases come as the country struggles with a current wave of delta infections bring the number of daily COVID-19 cases past 100,000, up 23% since before Thanksgiving, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
On Tuesday, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said the delta variant still accounts for more than 99% of genetically sequenced cases in the U.S.
Meanwhile, in New York, a new indoor mask mandate is set to shake things up come Monday when all indoor public places will be required to enforce masking if a vaccine requirement is not in place.
Daily COVID deaths in the state topped 50 on Thursday for the first time in months, while the daily caseload topped 12,400 for the first time since late January.
