Last year, I got a small tattoo on my arm of a shiny red bento box filled with white rice, divided in half by a small, whole grilled fish. On one side, the rice is topped with sakura denbu, a cherry blossom-pink condiment made from pulverized cod, along with a small pile of glistening soy beans on the other, the rice is unadorned save for a lone umeboshi, or pickled plum. The bento is an exact replica of the one that appears in the 1988 Hayao Miyazaki film My Neighbor Totoro. I saw the film for the first time when I was seven, and I havent been able to stop thinking about that scene since.
The movie is considered by many to be a classic of Japanese animation, which is more commonly known as anime, a term used to refer to animated movies and television series produced in Japan or inspired by Japanese animation styles. Since the 1960s, when hit shows like Astro Boy and Speed Racer were adapted for and exported to foreign markets, animes popularity has continued to grow worldwide, which in turn has created a kind of subculture of anime fans across the globe. But within that community theres a sub-subculture of people, like me, who love anime food.
Anime food is an escape for a lot of people. It has a very soothing effect.” says Christina Song, who created a popular anime food fan Instagram account in 2017. Its like a moment in time that is perfectly frozen.
Where The Wild Things Are
Based on the best-selling children’s book of the same name, Where The Wild Things Are is director Spike Jonze’s foray into fantasy, incorporating both live-action and CGI elements. A boy named Max , who’s otherwise lonely in his own world, finds himself in another realm where its creatures crown him as their king.
Despite its premise, the film is somewhat deeper in its interpretation of its source material and was hence marketed mainly for older viewers. The dark tones and story aside, what makes this film all the more worthwhile is featuring a memorable performance by James Gandolfini in his post-Sopranos career as he voices the reckless Wild Thing Carol.

The Protagonists Of Each Movie Are Interchangeable
As this user claims to be a huge fan of anime, they believe that the Studio Ghibli movies are vastly overrated and repetitive compared to other movies in the genre. But one of the biggest criticisms the user has is that the protagonists are interchangeable. However, most would agree that this isnt true, as just as there are some incredible Ghibli villains, there are great heroes too.
There might be a bit of credence to what the user trying to say though, as most of the protagonists are heroic females that are just of different ages. But the characters in all of the Ghibli movies are written so that young children can relate to and empathize with them. And as Ghibli guru Hayao Miyazaki had young daughters during the time he was making most of these movies, he clearly wanted to make films that his children could relate to.
The Movies Leave Viewers Wanting More
This user admits that they have only seen a couple of the studios movies, but they feel its enough to have an opinion about the whole studio. Based on watching My Neighbor Totoro And Kikis Delivery Service, the Redditor believes that the movies were too short and the endings were unsatisfying.
But true fans would say that this couldnt be further from the truth, especially when it comes to Totoro. Claiming that they wanted an exciting ending is unrealistic, as Totoro and Studio Ghibli, as a whole, is rarely about excitement and spectacle, but instead about the heart of the story.

Now That Studio Ghibli Is Streaming On Hbo Max Where Do You Start
If youre new to the riches of the Japanese animation studio, our guide can help you sort through its wonderfully deep catalog.

For decades, Studio Ghibli has broken mold after mold of what we expect films for kids to be.
The Japanese animation house founded by the filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and Toshio Suzuki has spent 35 years telling winding, complex stories that stretch the bounds of what animation can do. In one, a treacherous battle rages between humans and the deities of a forest fighting to maintain the balance of nature. Another tale pits sorcerers against each other and questions the supernatural ethics of using magic in warfare. And one story opens up a transcendent and terrifying spirit world, in a work heralded by New York Times critics as one of the best films of the 21st century.
But Studio Ghibli has also, with impeccable consistency, struck a rare balance that most family-oriented movies struggle to achieve. These are undoubtedly childrens movies but they also have a loyal following of adult fans, who devour their favorites over and over again.
Now 21 of the studios classics and lesser-known favorites are finding a new audience via HBO Max, the first time the films have been licensed to an American streaming platform. But if you havent been stockpiling the DVDs for years, navigating such a hefty, wide-ranging catalog can be difficult. Were hoping to make that easier with a few starting points.

Studio Ghibli Films Have Influenced A Decade Of Animation And Filmmaking
The Secret World of Arriettyfyghibli
From the beginning, with Nausicaä and the studios first official film Laputa , Ghibli established itself as a studio committed to the meticulous craft needed to make great, emotionally compelling animation. Even now, decades into the age of digital animation, Ghibli continues to utilize hand-drawn animation . Its films often take years to produce and animate because of this commitment, but that also keeps anticipation high.
Miyazaki helmed most of the studios most well-known films, and thus Ghibli has become synonymous with Miyazakis name and work. But Ghibli wouldnt have become the source of excellent filmmaking that it did without Takahatas expertise and the rivalry between him and Miyazaki.
With Suzuki serving as company director and occasional peacemaker, Takahata and Miyazaki initially competed, each one racing to release their films before the other. In 1988, just three years into the studios existence, Takahatas Grave of the Fireflies and Miyazakis My Neighbor Totoro were released in theaters as a double feature. They couldnt be more tonally different, but each brought the studio acclaim, and critics now view them both as seminal works. The following year Ghibli released the most profitable Japanese film of 1989, Kikis Delivery Service, directed by Miyazaki.
