Ariana Grande Gets Huge Tattoo Of Anime Character

Ariana Grande‘s latest tattoo has a ton of meaning!

The 25-year-old pop star, who debuted her new ink on her Instagram Story on Tuesday, is honoring Chihiro, an anime character, with her new arm tat. In the 2001 film Spirited Away, Chihiro works to free her parents after they are turned into giant pigs.

Grande shared pics of Chihiro before explaining the significance behind the tattoo in a lengthy statement.

“Chihiro’s growth into a capable individual is a core factor to the movement of Spirited Away‘s plot. During her adventure in the Spirit World, she matures from an easily-scared girl with a child-like personality to match her age to a hard-working, responsible, and brave young girl who has learned to put her fears aside for those she cares for,” the “God Is a Woman” singer wrote. “To protect her friends and rescue her parents from a spell that has turned them into livestock, Chihiro sheds her former personality and adapts to her environment to become a courageous, quick-witted and reliable girl.”

Her explanation seems to point to themes of growth and development, which Grande has certainly experienced over the last year with the Manchester bombing, her engagement to Pete Davidson and the release of her latest album, Sweetener.

Next, Grande revealed her new artwork, which takes up much of her forearm.

Who Is Ariana Grandes 7 Rings About

The singer also tried to pay homage to Japanese culture in the music video for 7 Rings, but it backfired horribly. She was accused of cultural appropriation and only made things worse by getting a misspelled tattoo in Japanese.

Grande wanted to commemorate the release of her new single by getting ink that read seven rings but got the spelling wrong. She ended up tattooing the symbol for shichirin, which is a Japanese-style barbecue grill and tried to fix it with little success.

She defended herself saying there is a difference between appropriation and appreciation. Grande also decided to stop taking Japanese lessons after the backlash and described them as something she was passionate about that brought her joy.

Her tutor Ayumi Furiya was devastated after seeing people were slamming Grandes tattoo online, especially because Japanese is extremely hard to learn.

I am so, so mad that many people are making fun of her. I dont want this to stop anyone from being motivated to learn another language Its not necessary for her to learn Japanese she just really wants to. I appreciate that. It makes her Japanese fans so happy, Furiya told The Cut.

Ariana Grande’s Thank U Next Gets Classic Anime Makeover

Ariana Grande is currently owning the pop music charts with her newest single, “Thank U, Next”, and the song is such a crossover hit that its even making a splash in the anime genre!

As you can in the artwork below, one anime fan has taken some key scenes from “Thank U, Next” and given it an anime makeover. And not just any anime style – the classic style of ’90s/’00s era anime:

What’s so great is that “Thank U, Next” is, in itself, a collection of famous scenes from rom-com and teen movies from the ’90s and ’00s eras. Included in the mix were Mean Girls, Bring It On, 13 Going on 30, and Legally Blonde, and it seems this anime rendition of the video was built off the Mean Girls and Legally Blonde scenes of Grande’s video.

If you’ve been doubting anime’s growing range of mainstream cultural crossover appeal, look no further than this. Old movies inspire a hit pop-music video, which then inspires some old anime style to make a comeback, in honor of that new pop-music video based on old movies.

Here’s a breakdown on what the latter movie is all about:
