Ghost Stories: The Dubbers Were Told To Do Anything To Get It To Sell
This anime, where a group of kids fought ghosts haunting their town with the help of a possessed cat, was redubbed to be more comedic, with added jokes and pop-cultural references, making it one of the most famous examples of gag dubs in the Western anime fandom.
The story goes that the original series did so poorly in Japan that the dubbers were given free rein to do whatever they thought would make the series profitable.

He appears at dusk where children gather and recites sinister tales based on Japanese urban legends, to which his young audience eerily intakes. He incorporates a kamishibai, a traditional paper-scrolling device, to add visuals to his already demented narration.A series of short horror stories, Yami Shibai begins with a bachelor who, after moving into a new apartment, immediately starts sensing a malevolent glare being pressed into him. A single talisman rests on his ceiling, but he has no way of knowing it is one of the few safeguards that separate him from a bottomless pit of suffering. Each story is more terrifying, more appalling, and more sickening than the last as the Storyteller’s audience find themselves being sucked into the vicious world of his words.

Samurai Pizza Cats: Even The Japanese Creators Thought It Was Funny
There are many theories as to why this series came out the way it did, but many believe that the dubbers either did not get transcripts or that they were poorly translated. Although the official explanation is that the Japanese showrunners wanted anything to be done so that the series would appeal to Western audiences.
One surprising change implemented onto the dub is that the cats were not even samurai in the original series, but were instead ninjas. Despite this, the dub was sol well-liked even the Japanese showrunners were said to prefer it.

Sgt Frog: This Dub Had A Gag Narrator & Gag Subtitles
For the most part, much of the plot from the original anime was more-or-less kept for the English version, but more jokes were added.
For example, Keroro was given an exaggerated love of mecha anime, namedropping Robotech and Exo Suard. Both a sarcastic narrator and sarcastic subtitles were sometimes added, too.

Doraemon: The Comedic Dub Was Made In England And Was Not Popular
This anime about a robot cat is infamous for its troubles breaking into the English market despite being one of the most iconic and long-running anime franchises of all time. However, the 1979 anime actually did get an obscure British English dub that added new jokes that were not in the original, usually pointing out how absurd situations were.
The version of the series that eventually reached the North American market was more or less a straight dub that had been slightly localized, such as money being painted over to look more Western
Tokyo Pig: This Was Likely Done To Explain Japanese Culture To Western Viewers
Although this series is already a surreal comedy, the English dub added a lot of jokes. This was likely done to compensate for the younger viewers not getting certain jokes or the show’s style of humor
Added to that, characters’ names were usually localized. That said, the series was still unquestionably set in Japan, since Tokyo is outright mentioned in the name of the show. For reference’s sake, the name of the original anime more or less translates to Fair, Then Partly Piggy.
Ghost Stories Am I Beautiful Kuchisake
The Kuchisake-onna from the preview.
Status: Partially Found
Ghost Stories is an anime series that ran for 20 episodes between 2000 and 2001. It centers around Satsuki Miyanoshita moving to a new town. After making new friends at school, they visit an abandoned building in the nearby area and discover that it’s haunted. The haunting was a result of Satsuki’s mother capturing ghosts who haunted the school and surrounding area. Due to the urbanization of the town, the ghosts are now roaming freely, and Satsuki must use a book from her mother to exorcise the ghosts for good. The series is best known today for its English dub by ADV, which heavily rewrote much of the original dialogue to turn the series into a dark comedy as opposed to a supernatural drama.
One episode, “Am I Beautiful? Kuchisake-onna” , attempted to depict the Kuchisake-onna urban legend. Kuchisake-onna , according to folklore, would stalk an area in a large overcoat and a surgical mask. She would ask children if she was beautiful or not and, regardless of their reply, would normally kill them after revealing her disfigured ear-to-ear slit of a mouth.
It is unlikely that Fuji TV will release the episode due to the controversy, and it’s unknown if they even still have a copy of it. As of now, the only footage from the episode that has been seen by the public is the 15-second preview.
Urusei Yatsura: This Gag Dub Came From The Bbc
As mentioned, North Americans don’t have all the fun when it comes to anime dubs. Produced by the BBC, the series was given the name, “Lum the Invader Girl,” which added extra jokes and adult humor. For example, an agent searching for Ataru in the first episode address him as the “oversexed son of a foot doctor.” A line not from the original anime.
While it’s not uncommon for British English dubs to have the British actors use American accents, this series gives characters British accents, with Ataru, in particular, having a thick regional accent.

Script And Concept Art
While the episode has never surfaced, on October 24th, 2020 the script was found online by Pixiv user , who uploaded twenty of the thirty page script. The script might have been taken from an 2002 archive of a website that hosted the script. Some of the pages for the script was not individually archived so the entirety of the script is incomplete. The user also uploaded concept art of Kuchisake-onna, which appears authentic as this same art also appeared on a Mandarake auction alongside official concept art of other Ghost Stories characters.

My Favorite Fairy Tales: Even The Vhs Covers Made Jokes
This anime anthology series adapted classic fairy tales for children, making its English dub a good tool for ESL programs. However, children in the English-speaking world already speak English, so at least one North American release had to get creative.
Footage of the series has popped up online from Fox Kids, where it appears to have been given the gag dub treatment. For example, Cinderella is a tabloid reporter who is being held prisoner by the Spice Girls. Her fairy godmother also makes a joke about being mistaken for Bob Saget. Even the VHS covers of the series’s English dub tried to make the series more comedic: Sleeping Beauty is yawning on her cover.
Where To Watch Ghost Stories English Dub Anime Stream Is It On Netflix Crunchyroll Hulu Or Funimation Answered
Ghost Stories English dub is available on Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, and VRV.
“Which is bettersub or dub?” has been a long, ongoing debate within the anime community. While a couple of English dubs may be better than the original subs for some, it’s pretty much just an “each to their own” thing. But for Ghost Stories, which was released in 2000, the English dub of this title did a complete 180 on the vibe of this supernatural animeturning into a cult classic.
Ghost Stories, also known as Gakk no Kaidan, is an anime series based on a book of the same title by Tru Tsunemitsu. The story follows a couple of elementary school kidsSatsuki, Hajime, Leo, Momoko, and Satsuki’s younger brother Keiichiroand the paranormal encounters within their town. Alongside them is a demon named Amanojaku, sealed within Satsuki’s cat.
Unfortunately, the series flopped in Japan. In 2005, Animax approached ADV Films for a North American release. According to Greg Ayres in a Q& A video last 2007, they were only given three rules:
1. They couldn’t change the name of the characters. 2. They couldn’t change the names of the ghosts because they’re based on real Asian legends. 3. They couldn’t change how the ghost was killed.
Ghost Stories’ script contains things we don’t usually see in English dubs. A common question might be, “Wait, is this dub legit?” Surprisingly, yes. Yes, it is.
