What Are Anime Speed Lines

How Anime is Made – Inside the Studio (Toei, Madhouse, Pierrot)

Anime speed lines are an effect that adds emphasis to action in cartoons, movies, and comics. In a classic setup, a lone hero stands before a challenger, both with looks of determination on their faces. For a few moments, the hero is still, almost as if gathering strength for the inevitable fight. When they spring into action, that gathered strength explodes as a visual effect that looks like sun rays emanating from each opponent. These radial speed lines extend out from their forms as they charge and the fight begins. Fans of anime have seen this countless times: anime speed lines tell you its time for action.

Despite the name, anime speed lines didnt originate in Japanese cartoons. The speed lines most associated with heroes, robots, and monsters about to fight originated in manga, or Japanese comic books. These black-and-white comics often needed a way to show motion in a still medium. Many anime series are based on manga, and those adaptations havent just incorporated the core concepts, characters, and story lines from a series. Theyve also incorporated mangas visual language, which includes shortcuts for showing emotions or action. Just like in manga, characters who are flying through the air in anime are often accompanied by a halo of speed lines.

TOKYO Business has never been better for Japanese anime. And that is exactly why Tetsuya Akutsu is thinking about calling it quits.

When Mr. Akutsu became an animator eight years ago, the global anime market including TV shows, movies and merchandise was a little more than half of what it would be by 2019, when it hit an estimated $24 billion. The pandemic boom in video streaming has further accelerated demand at home and abroad, as people binge-watch kid-friendly fare like Pokémon and cyberpunk extravaganzas like Ghost in the Shell.

But little of the windfall has reached Mr. Akutsu. Though working nearly every waking hour, he takes home just $1,400 to $3,800 a month as a top animator and an occasional director on some of Japans most popular anime franchises.

And he is one of the lucky ones: Thousands of lower-rung illustrators do grueling piecework for as little as $200 a month. Rather than rewarding them, the industrys explosive growth has only widened the gap between the profits they help generate and their paltry wages, leaving many to wonder whether they can afford to continue following their passion.

I want to work in the anime industry for the rest of my life, Mr. Akutsu, 29, said during a telephone interview. But as he prepares to start a family, he feels intense financial pressure to leave. I know its impossible to get married and to raise a child.

An interview with Terumi Nishii Part 2

Terumi Nishii is an animation director and character designer who has had a long career in Japan working on such hits as One Piece, Pokémon, and JoJos Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable

In April 2019, Terumi made headlines when she tweeted in English about difficult working conditions within the anime industry, flat out telling her audience of mostly foreigners, No matter how much you like anime, it is not advisable to come to Japan and participate in anime work. Because the animation industry is usually overworked.

In part 1 of my interview with Terumi, we zero in some of the biggest problems facing animators in Japan today. In this concluding part, some possible solutions are discussed

Weve talked a lot about the problems facing the anime industry. What are some of things that can be done to help it?

Currently, I am working at a company that is trying to hire talented artists as actual employees and is teaching them digital methods to make Japanese-style anime using technology.

Were starting to see some anime come out now that was made using CGI but it looks like old hand drawn 2D style, so I believe there could be a solution using both methods to create a hybrid.

Another big advantage of going digital is that we can work with overseas vendors easily so they can participate in the process, too.

What can anime fans do to help people working in the industry?

What else do we need?

Watching Anime In Theaters

Box office revenue for Japanese theatrical animations has doubled in the past 20 years. In the year 2000, revenue was at ¥19.2 billion, and in 2018 it rose to ¥42.6 billion. With Hayao Miyazaki “retiring” and Studio Ghibli not having produced a full-length anime film since 2014, many worried theatrical animation revenues would sink. Instead, films from popular, long-running series like Dragon Ball, Detective Conan, One Piece and Doraemon have captured filmgoers’ hearts along with movies directed by creators such as Mamoru Hosoda and Makoto Shinkai.

Though most of the box office revenue for these movies come from Japan, there is still a significant amount that can be earned overseas. According to Box Office Mojo, Dragon Ball Super: Broly made almost as much money in the States as it did in Japan . Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s likely those numbers will take a massive dip this year. Hopefully once a vaccine is ready and the theatrical business returns to normal, anime screenings will return more popular than ever.

Youre Not Too Cool For Guides

How to make a 2D animated web

I know if you feel that youre a great artist, that you may be able to skip valuable guidelines completely, but youre wrong! Using guides are extremely helpful, and they are there for a reason.

Use them, learn them, live them.

These guides are made especially for you, so use them to the best of your ability. Dont think that youre too cool to skip out on guidelines, as blatantly ignoring them could actually end up hurting you in the long run.

These vary, but a good rule of thumb is to have this be the primer for starting an anime character. There are similar rules of thumb for drawing the standard anime facial structure and features, but lets diverge from that for a bit and examine some basics when it comes to anime poses and drawing techniques.

Animation History And Its Impact

In the early 1900s, the United States experienced significant shifts in the labor market, the economy, politics, and society. These shifts changed the U.S. role on the international stage and helped fuel attitudes that were reflected in animation of the period. Examples include the following:

  • Progressive Era. The economy recovered shortly after the Panic of 1893, which ended in 1897. This gave rise to consumerism, which the entertainment industry helped to fuel during the Progressive Era, between 1900 and 1929. Womens organizations, labor groups, social welfare associations, and investigative journalism were also on the rise.
  • Immigration. Over 15 million immigrants arrived from Europe between 1900 and 1915, according to the Library of Congress. This helped change the demographics of many regions in the country. The immigration of the time also introduced new cultures and ideas.
  • War. The U.S. became an imperial power in the Caribbean and the Pacific regions. The country also entered the First World War in 1917, demonstrating its military might and cementing its global presence.

The history of stop motion in animated films dates back to 1898 with The Humpty Dumpty Circus. One of the most famous examples of early stop motion animation technique, A Trip to the Moon, was released in 1902. The plot involved astronomers building a space vessel that, when launched, hit the man in the moon in the eye.

During The Second World War

How to Animate – Start here! [ADOBE ANIMATE FOR BEGINNERS]

In the 1930s, the Japanese government began enforcing cultural nationalism. This also lead to a strict censorship and control of published media. Many animators were urged to produce animations which enforced the Japanese spirit and national affiliation. Some movies were shown in newsreel theaters, especially after the Film Law of 1939 promoted documentary and other educational films. Such support helped boost the industry, as bigger companies formed through mergers and prompted major live-action studios such as Shochiku to begin producing animation. It was at Shochiku that such masterworks as Kenz Masaoka‘s Kumo to Chrippu were produced. Wartime reorganization of the industry, however, merged the feature film studios into three big companies.

During the Second World War, more animated films were commissioned by the Imperial Japanese Army, showing the sly, quick Japanese people winning against enemy forces. This included films such as Maysuyo Seo’s Momotar: Umi no Shinpei or Momotars Divine Sea Warriors which focused on Japanese occupation of Asia.
