Female Anime Eye Specifics

How to Draw Manga Eyes! Step by Step, Slow Tutorial for Beginners!

Anime eyes are almost always drawn bigger and wider than real eyes. This is especially so for female characters who often have larger and wider eyes than their male counterparts.

One thing that really sets female anime eyes apart from male are more prominent eyelashes . This is not always the case but it does tend to be so.

For different styles of anime eyes you can check:

Be sure to make light lines for the line drawing part of the tutorial as you will need to do some erasing through the different steps. You can go over your drawing with a more solid line once you are done.

How To Color Anime Eyes

Here you can see the results from using different colors and blending modes. I used the Overlay mode for purple, Vivid Light for yellow, and Pin Light for the blue tones and the pink details. They blend great with the grey layer.

The key is to know where you want to place the grey gradients, the darker areas, and the highlights. Please go back to chapter 4. Styles and greyscale when in doubt.

Try different colors and see which ones are best for the effect youre trying to achieve. In this illustration, I chose two complimentary colors: purple and yellow with pink and blue tints.

Grayscale coloring steps:

In 1, I simply started with the previously created grayscale drawing.

In steps 2 and 3, choose any color you fancy purple, with some blue in my case and try a blending mode that blends well with the greyscale.

In steps 4 and 5, I add some yellow using the Vivid light blending mode.

In step 6, I usually soften the dots a bit, by using the eraser or decreasing the layer opacity.

Finally, in step 7, I just add the finishing touches to emphasize volumes and textures.

Whats The Difference Between Anime And Manga

The difference between manga and anime is that manga is seen in comics and graphic novels. And anime is seen on movies and shows. The characteristics of the two are basically the same. How they are presented is the only real difference.

The two are used interchangeably by the general public. Referring to these types of drawings as anime seems to be the most popular though.

Look & Learn How To Draw Anime Eyes

Ever since discovering anime, I have been fascinated by this Japanese art genre. Their characters are adorable no matter if theyre good guys or not. One of the main characteristics is the unusually large eyes they have. I spent a while perfecting my technique for drawing them and Id like to share it here. With just a few simple steps, you can capture the charm of the anime eyes and start creating your own unique characters.

For this mini-tutorial, Ive used Arteza colored pencils and a white gel pen. Colored pencils offer handling and vibrancy to cause your eyes to really stand out. The white gel pen is the ideal tool for adding bright highlights that bring the eyes to life!

    Drawing Female Anime Eyes

  • 1Draw the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a downward curving line for the upper lash line. Add a curved tail at one end , going down and back toward the other end of the line, so the upper lash line is C-shaped. Make the line about 1/3rd the length of the first curved line you drew. Then, make the upper lash line thick and bold with your pencil. For the lower lash line, draw a short, upward curving line centered under the first lash line you drew.XResearch source
  • Female anime eyes are usually bigger and rounder than male anime eyes.
  • Make the eyes about 1/6th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if youre drawing one. That way, theyll look big and exaggerated.
  • 2Sketch an oval between the lash lines. Make the top and bottom of the oval overlap with the lash lines so the top and bottom are hidden. Make the width at the widest part of the oval the same as the length of the lower lash line. This will be the iris of the eye.XResearch source
  • 3Draw a small circle near the top of the oval. Place the circle off to one side. Later on, youll leave this circle white, and it will look like light reflecting off of the eye.XResearch source
  • Make the circle about 1/10th the size of the oval.
  • It doesn’t matter which side you place the circle on, but it should be on the same side on both eyes if you’re drawing 2.
  • When youre done with your drawing, this circle will look like light reflecting off of the eye too.
  • Remember not to shade in the white circles.

    Degrees Of Realism And Stylization

In anime and manga, eyes are drawn in various degrees of stylization. Human anatomy in anime is stylized often to the point of being unrealistic, yet still very recognizable as the anime counterpart of the real world person the artwork is describing.

This is an important point. This means that if we are to draw anime, we must observe what we see in the world and put it through a stylizer machine before we output it on canvas as a more anime version of what we saw. Fortunately, we all have a stylizer machine called the brain!

In anime, there is a spectrum of on one end, very large anime looking eyes, and some on the other end, that are pretty realistic with some stylization flare. I tend to like something in the middle, although a lot depends on the artwork itself.

You can use this guide to draw eyes and stylize to your own comfort. Check out the image right below, anime eyes drawn on the left are more stylized and the ones toward the right are more realistic.

In anime, as we move away from realism, the shape of the eye is larger and more round, and the iris itself is drawn larger as well. More realistic anime eye drawings closer follow real human anatomy, with eye shape less rounded, although still styled.

With that said, here are seven common elements present in most anime drawings of eyes.

  • Highlights from at least 2 light sources
  • Drop shadow from the upper eyelid
  • Thicker lines on the upper eyelid, stylizing eyelashes
  • Indication of the upper eyelid crease
  • Enlarged Iris
  • Draw The Internal Details Of The Eye

TUTORIAL: How to draw Manga eyes – Step by Step

The internal details of the eye must be drawn, among which the iris and the reflections of light stand out.

The iris is drawn with a smaller oval than the previous one, which must be in the direction in which the character is looking at a specific moment.

On the other hand, the drawing of the reflections of the light is very important to give realism to the eyes of the character.

These reflections are given by the lights that are close to the character, with sunlight being the most common in all the drawings.

Each light has a different intensity, so the reflections of the drawing must have different sizes. Then, the reflection is represented with ovals or small circles that must be placed in the direction of the source of light that the artist chooses.

It is also important to say that you should not exaggerate with the amount of reflexes that your characters eye will have, given that 5 reflections would be the maximum that can be placed.

Bring Your Anime Character To Life

Ive been drawing anime for years just to kill time. Back in college, my school mates often asked me to do souvenir anime caricatures of themselves or their family members. Eye designs differ according to gender, age, and even characters. Well-made eyes will give a character more life, so lets move on and begin the tutorial.

Step-by-Step Guide to Shojo and Shonen Eyes

I chose to start with anime girls eyes as it is the most basic. In the case of the shojo eyes, they tend to be bigger, rounder, more colourful and expressive. The eye design seems to denote femininity and youth. The same eye design is also used for younger shonen characters or for some really androgynous bishounens.

Now to begin with, we will start with the upper eye lid.

Baylee Jay shows you five different ways you can draw anime and manga eyes. In this tutorial, Baylee will walk you through the way she draws those beautiful looking anime manga eyes.

How To Draw Almond Shape Anime Eyes

    Step 1:

Create the eyelash line by drawing a thick curve that tapers to a point. Finish the almond-shaped eye by adding the lower lash line.

    Step 2:

Create a circle that would overlap the eyelash line you just drew. Add a U shape in the middle of the circle to serve as the eyes pupil.

    Step 3:

    Step 4:

Add short lines around the U shape. Vary the length of the lines as you go along. This is an optional choice you can leave this part out if youd like.

    Step 5:

Fill in half of the iris as well and the U shape. While doing so avoid the highlight parts.

    Step 6:

Drag the color down and feather out the fill you just did to create a smooth transition.

    Step 7:

To create eyelashes, start by flicking lines around the eyelash line. The lines need to curve and taper to a point.

    Step 8:

Add a curved line to connect the end of each lash back to the eyelash line.

    Step 9:

Finish the eyelashes by shading in the gaps.

    Step 10:

The final step is to add a curved line just above the eyelash line for the eyelids. You can also add lower lashes by flicking short lines just below the lower lash line. Make sure that each lash tapers to a point.

Drawing Manga Eyes Step By Step

Here is and example of how to draw eyes in easy step-by-step sequence. Take whatever paper you have yes, the back of envelope will serve the purpose perfectly. Take a pen or pencil and do this exercise first. Do it now. Dont make too much preparation, like selecting the right pencil, the right paper/notebook, the right light, the right daytime, the right moodor the right whatever, because it is almost never right.

We are often stacked in too much unnecessary reparation that literally keeps us idle.

    1) Begin to draw with the outlines of eyelid first.

    2) It does not really matter what angles you decide because it will be your original, so take your time and be easy about it. If possible avoid using eraser. If you made a mistake or do not feel satisfied with the shape, draw over the previous line.

    3) You can observe the proportions and lines as on the picture and try to keep the same shapes but it is perfectly OK if your sketch does not resemble to this one.

    4) Draw a round circle of the iris. Notice that in most cases the upper part of the iris is almost always hidden under the upper eyelid. See your own eyes in the mirror.

    5) Approximately into the middle of the iris draw a round circle of pupil and, one smaller circle next to it, diagonally up above. This circle is the reflection of the light. Youll see in a moment why it is important.

    6) Now, shade the pupil, starting from the top. The upper part of pupil is darker, it helps to create an image of 3-dimensionality.

    Luckily Youre Not Alone

Manga characters eyes are one of, if not the hardest part of the face to master. Eyes are where most of someones emotion is expressed and when drawn well, an artist can create several layers of depth for a character. Based on the style you use, you can distinguish between kindness, malice, sadness, joy, and basically any other human emotion, all without any corresponding dialog.

In other words, eyes are super important in manga and something youll want to work on getting better at drawing.

The following are some tips you can use to improve your eye drawing skills.

How To Draw Male Anime Eyes

The Eye we dre above looked more like a Female eye, but why? And how can you draw a Male Anime Eye?

What makes an eye look male? The answer is pretty easy. It is slimmer, more angular, doesn´t have big light reflections and the iris is smaller.

Here is the sketch of an Eye, I made, keeping the differences from above in mind.

Not let´s add some details but we are keeping the eyelashes to a minimum and the reflections are very small. The lines are also way more angular.

Only these very subtle differences made a huge difference. You can obviously push the differences more by making the eye even slimmer and the iris rounder and smaller. Or you could also make the eyebrow bushier.

How To Draw Anime Eyes Male For Beginners

Male manga and anime eyes look quite a bit different from female eyes. They are narrower, and lack the extra eyelashes. However, the process is very much the same.

Begin with a circle for the eyeball. Then add in the upper and lower eyelids. For the male anime eyes, draw the eyelids so they overlap your eyeball. This will make them more narrow.

Finish drawing your male anime eye using the same steps that you used for the female eye. Then use your black pen or marker to ink your drawing.

Add an eyebrow as well. And color your eye drawing the same way as described in the female eye drawing process.

Just like with the female anime eyes, the male eyes can be drawn in many different ways as well. Experiment with different ways to draw the male eyes, and see what style you like most.

Experiment with using different colors for your eyes as well. Dont feel like they always have to be blue or green. They can be purple, pink, brown, or any other color you want to use.
