Male And Female Anime Faces

Although manga style faces are pretty feminine to begin with, there are certain ways to make the face look more masculine:

• The eyebrows are placed low above the eyes.
• The eyebrows may be thicker and less curved.
• The eyes are narrower.
• The eyelashes are minimal and less prominent.
• The pupil is small and circular.
• The lips are even less pronounced.
• The jawline is more pronounced.
• The neck is thicker.
• The nose is more pronounced.

Of course, not all of these methods must be applied. Sometimes, the sex difference is shown only by the clothes and the hairstyle!

Use Painter As Your Anime Drawing Software

Before drawing the nose, you should know where to place it. The guidelines we drew earlier will help you determine where you are going to sketch it.

The nose should be where the vertical line and the second horizontal line meet.

Sketch the nose. As we mentioned earlier, were going to draw the nose in two different views.

Front view: Sketching the nose from the front view is much simpler compared to the other views. You can get away with drawing a dash, a dot, or even two short lines to depict the nostrils. Just choose one of the three, position it in the right place, and youre done.

¾ View: You can place the nose in the same position as the front view, but you wont be using a dot or dash. For this view, youre going to use two lines to depict the nose. Sketch a slightly curved line for the bridge of the nose and complete it by drawing a second line with an inward curve to form the tip of the nose.

You can also add a nostril when sketching the nose from this view. All youll need to do is draw a short line near the lower line of the nose.

Draw the eyes, ears, and mouth.

Erase the guidelines. Be careful so that you dont accidentally erase the facial features youve drawn.

Draw the characters hair. You can sketch long, short, sleek, or messy hair based on your preferences.

Finish by adding some color or shading to the drawing.

Construction Of Anime Girl Head

We need a solid method of construction of the human head before we can understand how to draw an Anime/Magna head or face.

Trust me when I tell you that all, yes all great Manga artists know how to draw a realistic human head. Whats more, they know how to draw it really, really well. Do not skip learning anatomy and construction of the face and try not to dive right into drawing in the Anime style, before understanding the basics of construction.

Luckily, there is an incredibly powerful method for the construction of the face that we can learn and practice developed by Andrew Loomis. I published a detailed tutorial on the Loomis method and you can find it at this link.

Basically, the method evolves drawing a sphere to represent the top portion of the head, then drawing in the jaw and other features based on predetermined landmarks and proportions. It is a great starting point for drawing the face. Check out the tutorial above.

How To Draw An Anime Boys Nose

To draw an anime boys nose, follow the same process you used to sketch the anime girls nose. However, we should note that male and female anime noses have slight differences.

You have to make sure that you sketch a wider nose for the male character. If you decide to shade the nose, make the shading more pronounced compared to the shading on the female nose.

Draw The Top Part Of The Head

Start by drawing a circle for the top part of the head. Now think of the circle as a sphere and through this sphere draw a line that will determine the middle of the head. This line will curve around the sphere sort of like if you were to tie a string around a ball and look at it from the same angle at which you want to draw the face. If you were to look directly at the string from the front it would be a straight line but as you turn the ball the string would become a curve.

It can be helpful to first draw the line all the way around like the sphere is transparent and erase the hidden part afterwards. This way you will be less likely to make a mistake in drawing the curve.

Drawing Anime Girl Face Proportions

Now that we have the construction of the head covered, lets talk about the proportions in Anime and Manga art.

Proportions of a girls face in Anime and Manga are grounded in reality, with some exaggerated features.

The most notable are the eyes. The eyes usually appear larger. Eyebrows appear smaller than their average counterparts in real life. . So do the noses, and mouths.

Studying proportions in Anime and Manga:

The best way to study proportions is to look at Anime drawings you really like, then measure out the distances between the eye brows and the tip of the nose, the tip of the nose and the chin. As well as measure out the distance between the eyebrows and the hairline, and the hairline and the very top of the head.

You can also measure our the length verses the width of the head as well. Note that to do this properly you will need to find the head drawing that is at eye level. Various angles of a drawing of the head can foreshorten the drawing and make it hard to measure.

Once you have these measurements, you can compare them to the Loomis method, note the variation and adjust your Loomis head construction accordingly.

Compare this with your favorite Anime style, and see what adjustments should be made when you construct the next drawing.

Draw The First Draft Of Facial Features

Lets also cut in from both sides of the circle, and create the area for where ears will go .

Okay, this next stage is super important, so keep your focus and energy to get through it. We will now begin to use the markers from Step 2, to carefully place features onto the face, in a very draft-like way.

If you are using a pencil, press lightly and focus more on the overall shape and placement of the feature rather than the details. Eyes can be styled to look like ovals, for now, the nose can be adjusted to just a simple extension of the face. The lips can be simplified as well. We are not looking to draw the final beautiful image we are simply looking to help our minds in the next stage. That is to say, we are placing down a brief sketch for the eyes, the nose, the lips, and ears, to use as an underdrawing in the next stage of the drawing.

It is completely okay, if, at the end of this stage, your drawing looks like a sketchy mess , as long as you can easily identify where you can draw over it.

Keep adjusting your lines and your sketch, to fit the style and expression you are going for. Stop when you are happy with your progress. You should feel like what you have is a good summation of what is to come in the next step. More importantly, you should feel like you have a good base to draw over confidently.

Drawing The Male Figure

1Make an oval with a pointed bottom near the top of your paper for the head. Place the oval in the top middle of your paper so you have enough room to add hair later on. Draw angled lines down from either side of the oval that extend down to form the jaw line. Sketch the jaw lines so they meet at a point below the oval to form the chin.XResearch source

You can also draw horizontal lines marking the head size along the vertical guide. That way you can visually see where the characters anatomy lines up.

3Sketch in a rectangular shape for the torso. Draw a horizontal line below the chin on your characters head to mark the tops of their shoulders. Add lines down from the ends of the shoulder that angle slightly toward the center guide. Shade The Hair Add The Chin

Now you need to shade the hair for the final touch. In general, Manga artists pick a section of the hair to be highlighted and shade accordingly. Hair is typically shiny and therefore shaded with high contrast. In other words, the change from dark to light happens abruptly over a short distance rather than gradually over a longer distance. Use a photographic reference for help on highlighting hair.

The final touch: Draw lines that curve slightly inward down from the chin. These simple lines form your characters neck. In general, men have thicker necks than women, but keep in mind that the age of the character matters as well. In Manga, very old and very young males are usually drawn with skinny necks. You can shade the neck and face if you wish but keep it simple and dont overdo it.
