Section 22 Drawing Faces

How to Draw Manga Noses

Now that you have your characters head with all of the needed facial features, its probably a good time to add some ears and hair .

Ears are relatively simple unless youre showing them really up close. For this tutorial, theyll be pretty basic. Typically, ears should go from about the top of the eyes to the bottom of the nose. Its usually a good idea to look at a picture of an ear for reference during this part just so you can get a more solid idea of the shape. Obviously the earlobe will be thicker than the tip of the ear, but its entirely up to you when deciding how big they should be or what shape looks best.

Manga hair this is where you can really use your imagination. Short, long, curly, straight, spiked, bangs, tied back. The options are almost endless. Lets keep it simple, though.

Very lightly, draw a rough outline of the hair. Dont worry about parts or points or anything like that yet. Just focus on where you want the hairline to sit and how it should lay around the ears. From here you can start experimenting with length, bangs, and more of the fine details. Unlike realistic hair that is made up of millions of individual strands, manga hair is drawn in several sections or clumps. Once the shape of the hair is how you like it, you can start adding some finer lines throughout the different sections of hair to indicate the way it flows and where shadows will lie.

Numerous Examples Help With Learning

You can see how you can achieve this with a few strokes of the pen if you look at this illustration. Drawing the lips is only necessary in a few cases in order to show the expression of the manga mouth.

The corners of the mouth, the line where the lips meet and the shading above or below the lips are enough to give the mouth its plasticity.

Basic Nose 3/4 View Drawing

For the 3/4 view you can keep the vertical placement of the nose the same as for the front view. The vertical placement of the nose will be the middle of the face. You can roughly estimate where this will be by projecting a line down from the curve of the forehead to the bottom of the chin.

As you are really only drawing the end of the nose position it some distance away from this line so that the empty space leaves enough room to fit the full thing .

You can give a hint of the nose with just two curved lines as shown in the example above. Alternatively you can also only draw the top curve or even just a dot/dash similar to the front view.

Drawing Perfect Manga Eyes

Drawing The Nose Archives

After youve gotten familiar with balancing your proportions, feel free to bend these “rules” and get more creative. But for starters:

  • Manga eyes generally have a sharp top and bottom with softer sides or corners.
  • The eyebrow follows the shape of the upper eyelid to some degree.
  • The distance of the eyebrow from the upper eyelid is proportional to the eyes height.
  • The upper eyelid casts a shadow on the eye.
  • Girls eyes usually have more highlights in them and their eyelashes are longer than boys.

The eyes are arguably the most crucial and defining feature on your characters face. Therefore, experiment and see how you can express different emotions through the character’s eyes.

On Frustration With Drawing An Anime Face Of A Girl

As I mentioned in the beginning of this tutorial, we should be ready for minute changes and adjustments. Sometimes, this can turn into hours of tinkering to try to develop a drawing of a face you like best, these hours of tinkering can end up feeling very frustrating. Then the whole practice of drawing can end up frustrating, and then well you dont want to do it anymore or you want to do it less often.

How do we battle that frustration? Well, first, if you really want to get better, you wont let that discourage you. However, there are some things we can do to help.

First, go into the drawing expecting some level of tinkering. As I mentioned at the outset, drawing a beautiful face is not just a difficult task, it is a task where very small changes produce extremely visible results. Therefore, moving or redrawing the left eye 1 2 millimeters to the left , can be the difference between a drawing you are proud of, and a drawing that feels off in some way.

That is okay, the minute details are just what it takes, get comfortable with it. Over time, you will learn systems that will help you with placement of features, you will get better at approximating where the eyes should be placed to get the result you want subconsciously , so just stick with it.

Japanese Pro Vs Amateur

This is an interesting video as it shows how a pro draws anime and manga face and head, compared to an amateur.

While the video is in Japanese, dont let that bother you . Follow the lines, the hand movement, and see how the face and head structured. I also like the fact that the pro draws hair.

The video is especially nice because it shows you how the drawing from an amateur compares with the drawing from a pro.

Theres a clear mismatch in structure and in proportions. So it is useful to learn from a pro.

Examples Of Different Anime Styles

Once youve learnt the basic proportions and guidelines, you can change things up depending on your own preferences! Below are some anime-styled heads in different proportions. As you can tell, they have very different proportions ranging from more realistic to less realistic.

Draw Anime Character’s Nose Manga Based On Shadow And Light

How to Draw Female Noses

Another way to paint the nose for anime and manga characters is to use light and shadow to create a nose shape.

From the side , you draw the nose roughly like the example above, but the tip of the nose is slightly more pointed.

With a 3/4 view angle , you can draw the overhanging nose that doesn’t see the bottom of the nose, except when the light comes from below, you draw over the top of the nose.

Most of the time, under normal lighting conditions, the nose will have a shadow on the bottom and opposite side of the light source. So, if you draw the nose from the perspective and the light source comes from the upper left corner, you will draw the ball at the bottom and right of the nose. If the light comes from below, then you paint the ball over the top of the nose.

This style will be appropriate if you want your work to keep the pros but still somewhat anime and manga style. This way of drawing is also used when displaying a close-up of a character’s face.

If anything, the drawing is solid and looks very nice. Its also easy to follow through the video and learn while watching.

Section 3 Inking Your Drawing

How To Draw Noses Anime ~ Drawing Tutorial Easy

All right things should be looking pretty good at this point. You have your character drawn the way you like and youre ready to take the plunge into inking. Theres no going back after this step.

Grab a quality, fine-tipped pen and very slowly and carefully go over your lines. Its best to not lift the pen halfway through a line try and maintain a steady solid pen stroke. Once everything is properly outlined, let it dry a bit, then gently erase any sketch lines that remain. If done properly, you should be left with a very clean looking drawing of your character.

Whether you are using a digital media or pen and paper, Tom Richmond has a great inking tutorial if you want to take a look.

Section 21 Drawing Manga Eyes

There are probably hundreds of different styles you can use for eyes, but we will just go over some of the basics. For obvious reasons, male eyes differ greatly from female eyes, just as evil eyes look much different than good guy eyes. We could spend hours going over every single nuance, so for this tutorial, well keep it simple.

If youre interested this quora anwser is a reasonably comprehensive explanation of what different aspects of eyes could mean when drawing your Manga.

Lets start off with a basic female manga eye first. Start by drawing a curved line where the top of the eyelid and the eyelashes will sit. From here you will want to draw a large oval shape underneath, roughly the same width and the first line you made. Leave one side of the oval open .

Now you should have something that is starting to resemble an eye. If for whatever reason you arent happy with it thus far, just gently erase and start again. This is why you are pressing so lightly with the pencil. When the inking starts, theres no going back.

Inside this first oval, youll want to draw another smaller oval that is slightly overlapped on the top by the eyelashes. Then, draw yet another oval around pupil to represent the iris . If youre tired of drawing ovals, too bad There are more coming.

This next part is something very common among manga and anime .

Light reflections.

For the interested, these reflections are called catchlights in both film and photography.

Construction Of Anime Girl Head

We need a solid method of construction of the human head before we can understand how to draw an Anime/Magna head or face.

Trust me when I tell you that all, yes all great Manga artists know how to draw a realistic human head. Whats more, they know how to draw it really, really well. Do not skip learning anatomy and construction of the face and try not to dive right into drawing in the Anime style, before understanding the basics of construction.

Luckily, there is an incredibly powerful method for the construction of the face that we can learn and practice developed by Andrew Loomis. I published a detailed tutorial on the Loomis method and you can find it at this link.

Basically, the method evolves drawing a sphere to represent the top portion of the head, then drawing in the jaw and other features based on predetermined landmarks and proportions. It is a great starting point for drawing the face. Check out the tutorial above.

Later on this page, I will walk you step-by-step through how I use the method to draw an Anime girl face.

Drawing The Smaller Details Of The Face & Finishing The Line Drawing

How to Draw Anime noses and mouths

At this stage you can erase the parts of the face that are covered by the hair and add the smaller details o the eyes such as the eyelashes, pupils, and highlights. You can also shade in the eyelashes and add some more details to the hair.

When drawing the eyes you can lightly outline the highlights with a very light lines so that if you shade the eyes you dont accidentally shade them in also.

Once you are done you should have a finished line drawing of an anime girls head and face.

This is technically a finished drawing and you can leave it as is but if you want to go a little bit further you can move on to the next step for the shading.

You can see the finished line drawing of the facial features without the hair in the way in the illustration above.
