Section 2 Sketching Out Your Character

HOW TO DRAW ANIME PROFESSIONALLY

Now comes the fun part. Grab yourself a fresh, clean piece of paper, your favorite pencil, and get drawing. If youre not into traditional methods, you can use a tablet or a drawing pad and do your sketch right onto your computer. Isnt the future great?

Since this tutorial focuses on the head, it seems like as good a place as any to start.

Using light pressure, start with the basic face shape . Once youre satisfied with the size, angle, and form, you can begin plotting out where you want the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth so sit.

Now, youd think eyes would be fairly intuitive to draw, seeing as how everyone has them and you see them all the time. They are actually one of the trickiest parts for artists to get down skillfully especially on manga characters since they tend to be much more expressive.

Because of this, eyes get their own little section in this tutorial.

Draw Simple Manga Feet

Anatomy is any manga artists bread and butter.

Add Clothing Decoration And Hair

Using your skin layer outline as a guide, draw in your character’s clothing. Remember that these clothes should move with the character in their pose to create a dynamic image. Try to be inventive with these clothes since these will go a long way toward adding interest and representing your character’s story.

Draw in the shape of the hair. For manga art this can be larger than life, to make your character as dynamic as possible. Remember that the hair shape should appear to have movement like the rest of the character. Additionally, you can use the hair to add direction.

Shapes And Colors Of Anime Eyes

Pin by Katarina Marovic on pencil sketching

It is helpful to divide the eye creation process into a few steps.

Lets go back and break it down once more and add the coloring process. Let me show you some coloring techniques parting from the grayscale drawing that we already have from the previous part:

Remember: On top of the basic grays with their respective gradients, add brightness and textures that match the style of your drawing .

Steps 1 and 2, start by making the eyelids, this will help you to figure out where to place the iris and the rest of the eye.

In step 3, add some basic grey tones and then

In step 4, I set the color layers blending mode. In this case, I used Overlay, but you are free to try a few out and choose another mode that you like better. This way, the color that you add will be perfectly integrated with the gray tones. On the right, you can see where the blending modes for layers are located in my software. The default mode is Normal. From here you can play around and find which mode you are comfortable with.

If youre aiming for colorful, engaging anime eyes, vibrant, saturated colors may be best.

How To Draw Anime: 50+ Free Step

If you love anime & manga then of course youd wanna draw it.

Narutos storyline was terrific One Piece has incredible fight scenes and Studio Ghibli tugs at your heartstrings harder than Hollywoods The Notebook.

Dont get confused by the terminology though.

Simply put, manga is the comic book and anime is the actual animated content. For artists looking to learn the style there is no major difference.

Manga characters have very unique features unlike any other cartoon.

The eyes and head are enlarged, the facial features are simplified, and the backgrounds are often highly detailed. If youve watched enough anime or read enough manga the style should be ingrained into your memory.

In the past we covered a series of tutorials on chibi drawing but this comprehensive list of videos will teach you how to draw in the manga art style from beginning to endeven if you have zero drawing experience.

To get the most out of each video I suggest watching it through once and then going back to the start and drawing along.

When it comes to drawing practice really does make perfect. So bookmark this page because you are going to need it later! It takes anywhere from a few days to a few years to master the anime art style so just keep practicing and never give up!

Learn How To Draw In Shapes

Another thing, that I see a lot of beginner artist do, is to draw in Lines. The reality is, there are no actual lines in the real world. Lines are just an illusion. The World consists entirely of shapes. If you learn how to draw these shapes then you will never need to draw another line! This is also known as the painterly approach.

If you are confused, what I mean by shapes, then let me give you an example. Let´s say, you want to draw a ball, the most obvious shape is the circle, that will show the dimension of the ball. But then there are shapes defining the light side of the ball, shapes that define the cast shadow and the bounce light and shapes, that define the reflection of the ball in the surface of the underground and so on. All these shapes will create the illusion of a ball.

How To: Draw 1/2 View

This is a very good art tutorial on how to draw the manga head from the side view.

The artist explains her drawing process pretty nicely, and its easy to follow through. What I like about this tutorial is that the artist is explaining the differences between the female and male heads.

When we think about reality and how our heads differ from male to female, you dont notice so much difference. Yes, a male might have a bit more prominent chin than females, but overall we look about the same.

However, in the manga, there is a clear difference between male and female heads and faces, and in this video, the artist brings those differences up in a really nice and clear way.

What To Expect From This Tutorial

Im going to break it down into a few sections so its easier to follow. We will be covering everything from your initial , to rough sketches and inking, to shading and coloring. Not all manga is created equal there are tons of nuances depending on the kind of style youre into. Because of this, well be focusing on drawing eyes, faces, and the differences in andm . To keep things simple, this tutorial will focus on drawing the head of a character. Check out other tutorials later on for more advanced tips on bodies, poses, hands, feet, etc.

So, there you go. Once you get all your tools together, youre ready to begin.

Draw Things That Are Hidden

Its sometimes a good idea to draw things that are hidden by something else.

In the above example some parts of the head and face will be hidden by the hair in the final drawing but you may still want to draw their basic shapes and erase them later. The reason for this is to insure the correct placement of the parts that are visible. For example by doing a light drawing of the second eye you will be able to check the spacing between the eyes which will help you insure that the visible eye is correctly placed. You can also draw the outer shape of the ears to estimate the volume the hair needs in order cover them.

Make Light Line Drawings First

Draw using light lines first and then trace over them with darker lines once you are sure that everything is in the right place. This be especially helpful for large or more complex drawings.

Light lines are easier to erase if you make a mistake and easier to make .

Even if drawing digitally its still a good idea to first make a sketch and go over it with cleaner lines afterwards.

Tracing your own lines will also work as another exercise to help steady your hand.

Try and draw with as few lines as possible. If you make a mistake with your first line its fine to add more lines until you land the correct one but dont scribble or draw extra lines just for the sake of it. If you make too many mistakes erase that part of your drawing start over.

How To Draw Eyes From Realistic To Anime

How to draw a scene in Anime Studio Pro 11 – Drawing Tutorial For A Beginner

Ok, I do have to admit that, Reinaldo Quintero is one of those damn right amazing artists out there. So its essential that I include his anime eye tutorial to the list.

The tutorial is superb extensive, and REIQ truly shows you the very basics and also the fundamental of eye structure and how the eyelids work around the eyeball.

I do have to admit that it might be a bit too overwhelming, as there is so much to know and learn about the anatomy of the eye, but I still think this video is worth your time.

You might not be able to draw what he draws, but I would take this art tutorial as one of which you can learn from. Not necessarily practice from.

Refine Shading And Color

You can now paint or shade the image in black and white. As you indicate shading, make a note for yourself about where the light source is located. Try to keep the shading realistic, so that your drawing comes off as more believable. It can be helpful to use a photo reference for shading if you have trouble visualizing where the light and shadows will hit. If you are working in color, avoid using black for shading. Instead, use a deeper version of the way that the color looks in the light.

How To Draw Anime Characters
