‘another’ Offers An Intriguing Anime Spin On ‘final Destination’

A couple weeks ago, I said that horror and anime often don’t mix, and that’s mostly true. In anime, horror mostly deals with gore or “torture porn” and the supernatural. The former mostly deals with characters being constantly tortured or falling to over-exaggerated deaths, while the latter mostly refers to monsters and demons with exaggerated facial features. In any case, the anime relies on exaggerating whatever method it’s using to create shock value because it wants to remind you that what you’re seeing isn’t real, so they can get away with overplaying that disconnect.

But there are some creepy anime thrillers that can get under your skin, and a select few that could be considered true horror shows. One such show that is definitely horror is one that’s part junior-high drama, part supernatural murder-mystery with disturbing imagery, and part anime-version of theFinal Destinationfranchise by which I mean, you can expect some of the most bonkers, ridiculously bloody kill scenes.

The Saga Of Tanya The Evil

This anime is all about a man who stayed an atheist in the face of God.

After death, hes confronted by an all-powerful being. And yet he refuses to acknowledge its existence, so this God reincarnates him as a little girl in a country at war.

But even then the newly-named Tanya refuses to accept any holy power, and just becomes a soldier.

The God throws magic into the mix. But Tanya just uses it to murder everyone and everything in her path.

For an all-knowing being, you would really think that it would have thought a bit more ahead.

Re: Zero is one of the better known isekai. And for a good reason.

Its dark as hell and incredibly addicting.

It doesnt do anything too out of the ordinary plot-wise: a dude just gets transported into an MMORPG-esque world and tries to live his life.

The main difference is that here theres a respawn system in place for our soon-to-be mentally tortured protagonist.

When he dies, he just gets yanked back to a certain safe-point. And boy does he die a lot.

Its somewhat similar to what Log Horizon did, only here the mental trauma and gore are completely maxed out.

Kaze Ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru

First aired: 2018 | Episodes: 23Where to watch it: Crunchyroll

Any good sports anime will leave you wired with tension, glued to each play and each moment of team bonding. Long-distance track racing however, is not necessarily a sport that makes people dizzy with adrenaline, and so Production I.G., a studio that really knows their sports , takes things down a notch.

Meet Kakeru, a former ace runner who lost his friends and his club due to an altercation in high school. Now a university student, he gets invited to a downtrodden dormitory. It turns out that the dorm houses the involuntary members of a running club, all roped in by Haiji Kiyose, who wants them to participate in the Hakone Ekiden, the most prestigious university relay race in all of Japan.

Its a ridiculous plan, but the series takes you all the way from a group of young men refusing to even entertain the idea to reluctant training and finally, the race. Each of them faces different personal issues, and if theres one reason you likely wont expect from a sports anime, its sobbing like a baby when one of them has a breakthrough. The emotional depth of Run with the Wind is just that great, and its nice to see an anime like this focus on the issues of young men, rather than high school students.

Not Worth It: A Certain Magical Index

If A Certain Magical Index ended after its second season, it would just about earn itself a recommendation. Unfortunately, the third season does such an awful job of adapting one of the light novel’s most crucial storylines that it retroactively diminishes the value of the entire series. After two seasons of build-up for a potential war between magic and science, season 3 rushes through the conflict at such a frantic pace that familiarity with the novels is required to properly follow along.

A Certain Magical Index‘s anime is only worth watching to provide some context to A Certain Scientific Railgun, which is a far better series.

Worth It: Attack On Titan

Top 10 Transferred To Another World Anime Part 6 [HD]

With a fourth and final season expected to drop by the end of the year, Attack On Titan looks set to come to an end. It has been an incredible ride that has only gotten better with each new twist. A dark fantasy series about humanity’s attempts to survive in a world with massive creatures known as Titans, Attack On Titan started out as a relatively straightforward action series with Eren, the protagonist, seemingly fulfilling the role of a “chosen one.”

However, the subsequent seasons dispelled this cliche while also adding political intrigue into the mix. Even if the first season ends up leaving something to be desired, it is worth sticking with Attack On Titan for just a bit longer.

Natsume’s Book Of Friends

First aired: 2008 | Episodes: 74Where to watch: Crunchyroll

Growing up hasn’t been easy for Natsume, because he’s an orphan, and also because he can see yokai, or spirits, that no one else can. This makes him a bit of an outcast, but when he inherits a book from his late grandmother, his life suddenly makes a lot more sense. She could see spirits, too, and “bound” many of them to her in the Book of Friends, which is why they now hound poor Natsume.

The simple premise of the show is that Natsume seeks out these spirits in order to restore their names to them and unbind them. It’s a show that manages to be melancholy and heartwarming from episode to episode and even moment to moment. It’s a slice-of-life series with a touch of the supernatural, but what makes it great is how it uses those supernatural encounters to tell human stories. Getting to watch Natsume grow across many seasons keeps the formula from feeling rote.

A Place Further Than The Universe

After watching A Place Further Than The Universe, viewers will want to grab their friends and go on an epic odyssey just like the one that this show’s main characters embark on. And this time, there’ll be no more room for excuses!

Young Mari Tamaki is haunted by the fear that she’s not living life to the fullest. With encouragement from Shirase Kobuchizawa, Mari sets off on a life-changing journey to Antarctica. Along the way, they’re joined by Hinata Miyake and Yuzuki Shiraishi. Their journey to Antarctica is truly inspiring, but the real heart of the series is the friendship between the four girls. This is an anime that’s heartfelt, moving, and feels so authentic.

Re: Zero Starting Life In Another World

Crunchyroll

Watch on: Netflix, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Prime Video

Whats it about: Subaru Natsuki, an average guy ends up being isekaid to a fantasy world thats quite brutal to him to the point where he dies, repeatedly. But, every time he does, he returns back to life to a set moment in time before the fatal moment occurs to allow him to potentially change the outcome to a more positive one.

What makes it good: Initially looking like a standard Isekai with people expecting a harem and an overpowered MC, Re:Zero explores the trauma of Subarus anime reincarnation powers and shows us the real price of it as he bears witness to his own death, and the death of his own friends, over and over again, while he desperately tries to find ways to fix it. A true thriller, albeit a graphic one.

Do You Love Your Mom And Her Two

Im going to put this here for that one person who just really likes trash-isekai, as this is the absolute king of trash-isekai in my opinion.

In fact, a lot of people in the community have coined a new term for this particular show: milfsekai.

Thats right, its your normal isekai formula, only the main duo consists of a boy and his mommy who loves him very much.

If you turn your brain off and dont think about the implications this show has, its actually pretty fun. So there you go.

Worth It: World Trigger

As a season 2 has been confirmed for World Trigger, this is the perfect time to start Toei Animation‘s anime. Based on a manga by Daisuke Ashihara, World Trigger envisions an alternate reality where a gate appears linking humanity to a world filled with monsters called “Neighbors.” The anime follows the National Defense Agency’s attempts to protect humanity while also trying to learn more about this strange world.

World Trigger has an infamously slow and unsatisfying start, as the anime takes a while to properly establish its characters and universe. However, things pick up significantly after approximately 20 episodes, specifically once the Large-Scale Invasion Arc commences. From there, World Trigger just gets better and better.

In Another World With My Smartphone

Top 20 BEST Isekai Anime of All Time You MUST Watch (Another World)

This show is deceptively good.

The premise is exactly what the title promises: a guy gets struck by lightning on accident and God goes Im so sorry fam, any way I can make it up to you? How about a fantasy world plus anything you wish for?

And the MC promptly asks to take his smartphone with him.

The show goes harem mode pretty quickly, but the protagonist is way more ballsy than most MCs in this position. And the way he goes about fighting is quite entertaining as well.

The entire show feels like a parody of isekai shows, which is something I can appreciate.

My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom

It was another REALLY good anime so now what

This feels like metagaming-the anime.

Our protagonist, Katarina, is reborn inside of a video game she used to play. However, shes born into the role of the villainess and she quickly regains her memory from her past life, meaning that she knows shes evil and is going to die by the end of the campaign.

So she has to do her best to progress the story but avoid ever reaching a conclusion in order for her head to remain on her shoulders.

Again, the concept alone was enough to reel me in. And the cast of lovable characters only furthered my enjoyment.

Ascendance Of A Bookworm

Crunchyroll

Watch on: Netflix, Crunchyroll

Whats it about: Urano Mototsu, an avid book lover, has her life ended in a tragedy before being reincarnated into a fantasy world as a 5-year old girl named Myne. Due to the worlds lack of technology, however, she doesnt have a lot of books available to her to enjoy her passion in life, so she becomes determined to find ways to get more, even writing some of her own!

What makes it good: This is your textbook fantasy slice of life anime, though one with a bit of added realism to it. Its a character-driven story focused on Myne who, outside her knowledge, doesnt have any overpowered skill set at her disposal to achieve her goal. Bookworm is definitely a departure from your typical trapped-in-another-world adventure, but it should be your first choice if youre looking for a slow-paced, relaxed anime to unwind after a long day.

What It Brings To The Conversation

What you wouldn’t expect from this show, at least at first glance, is an exploration of grief and the painful process of moving on. Though it doesn’t go as deep as other horror movies or TV shows,Another has something to say about the shock that comes from losing someone and how desperate one becomes in trying to reject one’s new reality.

But the biggest theme thatAnotherfocuses on is that of superstition and paranoia. Beliefs and curses, and most of all how far people are willing to go in order to save themselves from that curse plays a huge role in the second half of the show. Even if you’re not entirely sure a curse will come for you and kill you, would you give up a chance at living? What if it comes at the cost of someone else’s wellbeing? From bullying classmates, to deadly wounding them,Anothershows the desperation and paranoia that can turn anyone into a madman.
