Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby

Top 10 Netflix Anime [MUST WATCH]

Director: Adam McKay

Writers: Adam McKay and Will Ferrell

Cast: Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amy Adams, Gary Cole, Leslie Bibb, Jane Lynch, and Michael Clarke Duncan

Its tickling to no end that a Best Director Oscar nominee is the same mastermind behind such silliness as Anchorman and Step Brothers. But writer/director Adam McKays masterful hold over tone and subject matter in The Big Short is simply an extension of something hed been doing for years, with Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby acting as one of the biggest dupings of general audiences in recent memory. On the surface, its a silly comedy starring Will Ferrell as a goofy race car driver. But at its heart, Talladega Nights is a searing takedown of corporate culture and Southern pride. Its incredibly effective, with hilarious supporting turns by John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon upping the goof factor exponentially and the late Michael Clarke Duncan showing a side of himself audiences had never seen before. This is Adam McKay doing what he does best, only on a broader canvas and with considerably more Mountain Dew. Adam Chitwood

Writers: John Brancato and Michael Ferris

Cast: Michael Douglas, Deborah Kara Unger, Sean Penn, James Rebhorn

The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf

Netflix has gone all-in on The Witcher franchise, commissioning not one, but two spin-offs ahead of the long-awaited and long-delayed The Witcher season two. Live-action spin-off series The Witcher: Blood Origin is still a while away, but this anime feature film has arrived relatively speedily and will do more than sate fans appetites for more Witcher content. Nightmare of the Wolf tells the origin story of Geralts mentor Vesemir, rewinding to when he was a cocky young witcher enjoying the money and glory of his monster-hunting work. However when a strange new monster starts terrorising the kingdom, Vesemir must confront his dark past and question what it really means to be a witcher.

Vesemir will appear as a wisened witcher-trainer in season two of the main show, but this spin-off provides a rare opportunity to see the Continent from a fresh perspective and delve deep into Vesemirs character and indeed witchers themselves. Fans of the lore, in particular, will get a kick out of this film, which shows us in detail how witchers are created and explores mages and their complex relationships with witchers. Viewers who never embraced the original Henry Cavill-led series to begin with will find little extra to entice their interest in this spin-off, but those with at least a passing knowledge of Strigas and Kikimoras will find a swashbuckling adventure well worth their time along with wonderful animation and inventive action.

To All The Boys Ive Loved Before

A sweet, precisely executed romcom, which serves as an homage to the best films of the genre from the 1980s and 90s. Lana Condor stars as Laura Jean Covey, a Korean-American high-schooler whose world is turned upside-down when a box of private love letters that she penned to her crushes is distributed to its intended recipients. Based on the YA trilogy by Jenny Han, it became one of Netflixs most successful original films in 2018. Watch out for a break-out performance from mini Mark Ruffalo, Noah Centineo .

Don’t Miss: Shows Like Darling In The Franxx

The Best Anime Movies You Can Watch On Netflix Right Now

In an age with an almost excessive number of streaming options, it’s hard to remember the days when anime was much harder to access. Before shows and films had North American distribution, fans were ripping their own painstakingly subtitled versions onto VHS tapes and selling them to other fans. In the ’90s, things got a little easier as shows like Sailor Moon and Pokemon started to air on children’s television stations. But anime movies weren’t really showing in American theaters yet. Eager viewers had to turn to their local library or to video rental stores. In both cases, the options were limited, and the staff not necessarily knowledgeable about what they were stocking.

Fast-forward to today, and there are anime-specific streaming services like Crunchyroll and Funimation, the latter of which is a long-running North American anime distribution company. But beyond that, streaming services that appeal to a larger variety of viewers than just anime fans have begun to add anime to their rotation, acknowledging that the medium is becoming ever-more ubiquitous in our society. On Netflix right now, there are anime films that run the gamut from old classics to modern hits to works created exclusively for Netflix. Here are some of the best.

The End Of Evangelion

For many people, Neon Genesis Evangelion is synonymous with “anime.” It was one of the first series that many North American fans of a certain age saw and probably when they were a little too young to appreciate its complicated themes and messages. The End of Evangelion is a perfect film for anyone who loved the original anime but was left with questions by the end. The movie picks up, time-wise, where episode 24 leaves off, acting as an extended finale, providing an alternative to the anime’s original close.;

As with anything involving Evangelion, the movie has been the subject of controversy among fans. Where the original series ended on a confusing but hopeful note, The End of Evangelion sees protagonist Shinji Ikari falling into an apathy that proves dangerous. This movie will be most appreciated after a marathon viewing of the original anime series also available on Netflix!

From Up On Poppy Hill

Director: Gorô Miyazaki

Writers: Tetsurô Sayama, Hayao Miyazaki, Keiko Niwa

Cast: Sarah Bolger, Chris Noth, Anton Yelchin

The movie takes place in the post-war era of Japan, with the population striving to move on. It is 1963, a year before the commencement of the Tokyo Olympics, that marks the start of a bright future.

However, a group of teenagers must save their schools clubhouse from the wrecking ball in preparations for the grand event. The movie is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates the slice-of-life genre.;

Berserk: Golden Age Arc I

Best animated movies on Netflix: top 10 must

The first entry from the Berserk: Golden Age Arc is such a banger. Based on the Berserk manga series, the first film tells the story of mercenary Guts in the war against Midlands rival kingdom. The series is set in medieval pseudo-Europe dark fantasy world, and follows the tale of Guts and Griffith, the leader of the mercenary band called the “Band of the Hawk”. All three movies from the series are available to stream on Netflix, so this trilogy is a great option if youre looking to binge.;

All Dogs Go To Heaven

A memorable family film that kind of horrified children in the late ’80s with the tender tunes of Burt Reynolds as a dead dog trying to save himself from literal damnation. Look, it’s no Secret of NIMH, but any of the Bluth ’80s animations remains something to be respected, if not simply riffed upon by today’s cartoonists and content creators.

Violet Evergarden: Eternity And The Auto Memory Doll

Violet Evergarden helped establish Netflix as a legitimate anime streaming service, one that might not offer the quantity of a Crunchyroll but can match its competitors in quality. Violet Evergarden: Eternity And The Auto Memory Doll tells the emotional tale of two sisters separated by space who are connected through Violet’s postal service.

The animation is unsurprisingly gorgeous, and the story’s warmth makes the film an easy sit. The film tackles the subject of family, and how it goes deeper than just blood.

What Happened To Mr Cha

In a very meta twist, legendary South Korean actor Cha In-pyo plays an outsize version of himself in this 2021 film. As an actor past his prime and growing more irrelevant by the day, he embarks on a series of increasingly ridiculous stunts in an attempt to recapture the level of widespread fame and adoration he held earlier in his career. “In doing so, he crosses the boundaries between his real self and the fictional character in the film. He peppers his characterization with the outgoing, relatable, and intense aspects of his own personality, while delivering snippets of fresh ideas and hearty laughter,” per Netflix. Even more fun: Cho Dal-hwan, known for his highbrow acting roles, plays Cha In-pyo’s sidekick.

Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind

MUST WATCH KOREAN MOVIES ON NETFLIX | EONTALK

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind tells the story of a badass princess before it was cool. It’s too bad the concept didn’t really exist on an international level.

The movie fell into the children’s market when it was first imported, and therefore most of the best material was edited out. Even the title was changed to Warriors of the Wind to reflect that the titular character had been relegated to a limited role. Thankfully, the modern version you can watch on Netflix is the unedited version as opposed to the limited theatrical cut that was released decades ago.

Anime fan or not, everyone has heard about this franchise. The classic show revolves around themes of friendship, superpower, evil, and everything in between.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a show that became a turning point in how the Magical Girl genre is viewed in the anime community. For many, when they think of the Magical Girl genre, they think of classics like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura. What makes Madoka different is that it took a more mature look at the nature of the concept of teenage/pre-teen girls fighting monsters and the consequences of that. Given the nature of the story in Madoka, its better going in without spoilers. All episodes of the original series are on Netflix.
