Drawing The Male Figure

  • 1Make an oval with a pointed bottom near the top of your paper for the head. Place the oval in the top middle of your paper so you have enough room to add hair later on. Draw angled lines down from either side of the oval that extend down to form the jaw line. Sketch the jaw lines so they meet at a point below the oval to form the chin.XResearch source
  • Male anime characters usually have longer, narrower faces than females.
  • Dont draw your circle too large or else you wont be able to fit the rest of the body on the page.
  • 2Extend a vertical line thats 6 ½ times taller than the head down the page. Measure the height of your characters head from the top of the circle to the bottom of the chin. Multiply the measurement by 6 ½ to find out how tall your character should be so its proportional. Start the line in the top center of the head and extend it straight down to the length you found so you know how tall your character should be.XResearch source
  • You can also draw horizontal lines marking the head size along the vertical guide. That way you can visually see where the characters anatomy lines up.
  • 3Sketch in a rectangular shape for the torso. Draw a horizontal line below the chin on your characters head to mark the tops of their shoulders. Add lines down from the ends of the shoulder that angle slightly toward the center guide. Once the torso extends halfway down the vertical guide line, draw a horizontal line on the bottom for the hips.XResearch source

    Drawing Perfect Manga Eyes

After youve gotten familiar with balancing your proportions, feel free to bend these “rules” and get more creative. But for starters:

    • Manga eyes generally have a sharp top and bottom with softer sides or corners.
    • The eyebrow follows the shape of the upper eyelid to some degree.
    • The distance of the eyebrow from the upper eyelid is proportional to the eyes height.
    • The upper eyelid casts a shadow on the eye.
    • Girls eyes usually have more highlights in them and their eyelashes are longer than boys.

The eyes are arguably the most crucial and defining feature on your characters face. Therefore, experiment and see how you can express different emotions through the character’s eyes.

Drawing An Intellectual Male Anime Character

The intellectual character type in anime and manga does not necessarily mean a shy or weak male character. On the contrary quite often these characters can be both physically though and intelligent. Often these tend to be the school council president or some type of leader.

For the intellectuals normal look draw the eyebrows in their natural state with the eyes slightly narrower than the default character example at the start of the tutorial. Make the irises slightly smaller as well. Smaller/narrower eyes will both make the character look more serious and hint that they may have impaired vision.

Draw the mouth in a light upside down curve to again make the character look more serious.

    Adding In Facial Features

How to draw an anime face (Step by step)

Firstly, add the ears. From top to bottom they should go from the eye line to the nose line. Add in the nose, which can be of any shape but it must just touch the bottom of your horizontal nose line.

NOTE: To help with how big to make the eyes, the eye guideline from ear to ear should be roughly five eyes wide. This means that your eyes should have an eyes length that separates them in the middle.

The eyebrows require simple curved lines above the eyes and the placement doesnt really matter too much, they just need to follow the placement of the eyes. You can experiment with different shapes and placement to portray various different emotions.

Lastly, draw the mouth line halfway between the bottom of the nose guideline and the bottom of the lip line.

That’s the proportions sorted, now let’s make it Manga…

    How To Draw Anime Legs

In this step by step tutorial, we will learn how to drawAnime Legs in 16 steps. Lets draw and learn How to Draw Anime Legs.

    Step 1.

First things first. DO NOT draw your anime legs just as straight lines coming down from the torso. People have hips even if theyre a cartoon, just like they have different muscles and knees. Also, you can overdo it with the legs. Legs make up half of the body, no more, no less.

    Step 2.

In anime, girls will have thin and lean legs whereas guys will have more muscle and toning to them. They will also be longer and broader.

    Step 3.

Now, legs have knees and knees let your legs bend. You can have your leg straight, have it bent just slightly as if youre just walking. It can be fully bent as if youre springing, or it can be folded up under you as if you are sitting on your legs.

    Step 4.

And you cant draw legs without feet. Feet are sort of like hands, as far as bone layout goes. There are two sets of bones, the metatarsals and the tarsals. The metatarsals make up your heel and your ankle while the tarsals make up the rest of the foot and your toes.

    Step 5.

Now for a little bit of practice. Well start with a base that we can work off of and have one leg straight and the other leg at a slight bend starting at the knee.

    Step 6.

Well start with the lines of one of the thighs.

    Step 7.

And then well do the same on the other leg, drawing in that thigh as well.

    Step 8.

Then well draw in the knee and the calf of the first leg.

    Step 9.

Younger manga or anime characters will have a narrow neck because they arent as muscular or defined. Start With A Simple Shirt

Anime clothes drawing will vary depending on how youd like your character to be dressed. For beginners, a simple shirt design is the easiest starting point.

Around the neck of your character, draw sloping lines downwards and around the neck, leaving a small gap in the middle, to create an open-collar shirt.

Start with the shirt collar before working on the sleeves or details.

Along the arms, add a light line in the middle where the elbow crease would be, with two slightly curved lines around the wrists for the ends of the sleeves. From here, you can draw a line straight down from the open collar to the waist, leaving an upside down V shape at the bottom. Draw two lines from either side of the hips in to meet the bottom of the V shape to form the ends of the shirt. A few dots up the centerline will give you the buttons.

Buttons and crease lines help to make your clothing appear more realistic.
