As A Bonus We Will Ink Our Drawing

All my anime art tutorials are done in simple pencil sketch. Back then, when I started the anime eye, I never inked my sketch because I thought it wasnt necessary. Its just an eye.

Now, I decided to ink my work once and for all.

For one thing, it saves time, as smudging and shading could take some efforts to get it right. For another, an inked drawing can be clearly seen when taken with a cellphone camera.

And I have to admit that it looks better.

For our anime boy, we wont get a smudged pencil sketch, but an inked drawing.

Why Learn To Draw Anime

A lot of us grew up watching shounen anime. You know, those wild and sometimes violent shows with crazy fight scenes, unique stories, crazy competitive sports and a kid in a funny outfit and spiky hair. Admit it, we love them. The West grew up with ’80s action-adventure cartoons, and the arrival of shounen anime offered a unique twist. The anime boys of the ’90s appealed to a broad audiencefrom kids to young adults. They vary from nice guys with earth-shaking furies to hotblooded competitors , from hyperactive ninja to space cowboys . Even today, shounen anime never lose their spark, and they will continue to charm future anime geeks for years to come.

And yes, they are fun to draw.

Shoujo characters might be the first anime figures I learned to draw, but once I got the hang of it, I upgraded to doing shounens. They seem to reflect a hotblooded side of me, and I have fun sketching them with oversized weapons . With that said, lets do shounen characters this time. I will draw my character based on my preferences .

I suppose its really in the eyes that Anime differentiates itself from typical, more Westernised cartoons.

That distinctive box-like shape which somehow manages to be expressive. Its iconic, in its own way.

One of the things I loved drawing most when I was young was anime people, especially eyes.

To me, drawing anime eyes is so fun, unique, and simple. Its a great way to create without the burden of having to make something look real enough.

That is why I decided to create this blog post: A step-by-step tutorial on how to draw anime eyes.

For the ease of creating this tutorial, I decided to digitally draw the steps but the technique I use to draw them digitally or traditionally does not differ.

As you draw these eyes, I recommend using light, short strokes to achieve the overall line and shape you want. This is also a good way to naturally give depth and dimension to any drawing you create.

How Do Guys Draw Anime Eyes

Drawing a Male Anime Eye Step by Step Step 1 Shape of The Eye. Anime male eye outer shape. Step 2 Iris. Anime male eye iris. Step 3 Pupil. Anime male eye pupil. Step 4 Shadow. How To Color Anime Eyes

Here you can see the results from using different colors and blending modes. I used the Overlay mode for purple, Vivid Light for yellow, and Pin Light for the blue tones and the pink details. They blend great with the grey layer.

The key is to know where you want to place the grey gradients, the darker areas, and the highlights. Please go back to chapter 4. Styles and greyscale when in doubt.

Try different colors and see which ones are best for the effect youre trying to achieve. In this illustration, I chose two complimentary colors: purple and yellow with pink and blue tints.

Grayscale coloring steps:

In 1, I simply started with the previously created grayscale drawing.

In steps 2 and 3, choose any color you fancy purple, with some blue in my case and try a blending mode that blends well with the greyscale.

In steps 4 and 5, I add some yellow using the Vivid light blending mode.

In step 6, I usually soften the dots a bit, by using the eraser or decreasing the layer opacity.

Finally, in step 7, I just add the finishing touches to emphasize volumes and textures.

1Draw the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a downward curving line for the upper lash line. Add a curved tail at one end , going down and back toward the other end of the line, so the upper lash line is C-shaped. Make the line about 1/3rd the length of the first curved line you drew. Female anime eyes are usually bigger and rounder than male anime eyes.

Make the eyes about 1/6th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if youre drawing one. That way, theyll look big and exaggerated.

2Sketch an oval between the lash lines. Make the top and bottom of the oval overlap with the lash lines so the top and bottom are hidden. Make the width at the widest part of the oval the same as the length of the lower lash line. This will be the iris of the eye.XResearch source

3Draw a small circle near the top of the oval. Place the circle off to one side. Later on, youll leave this circle white, and it will look like light reflecting off of the eye.XResearch source

Make the circle about 1/10th the size of the oval.

It doesn’t matter which side you place the circle on, but it should be on the same side on both eyes if you’re drawing 2.

When youre done with your drawing, this circle will look like light reflecting off of the eye too.

Remember not to shade in the white circles.

For spacing the eyes draw them far enough apart that another eye can fit in between them.

Draw the eyebrows after drawing the eyes. Usually the eyebrows tend to be slightly wider then the eyes.

Anime eyes of older male characters tend to be drawn narrower than those of younger characters . Anime eyes of younger male characters are often drawn very similar to or exactly the same as those of female characters.

You will need an eraser and a pencil also paper so make sure you have everything beside you in order to start drawing.

Sketching Male Anime Eyes

1Sketch the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a horizontal line with a slight curve. Then, draw a line with a slight upward curve coming down off one end of the first line at a 45-degree angle. Make this line about 1/3 the length of the first line you drew. At this point, the upper lash line will have a C-shape, and youll be able to see the outer corner of the eye. Male anime eyes are usually smaller and narrower than female anime eyes. The curves on the upper and lower lash lines should be slight so the eye doesnt look too round.

Draw the eyes about 1/8th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if youre drawing one.

2Draw an oval between the lash lines. Center the oval and make the top and bottom overlap with the lash lines so only part of the oval is visible. Make the width of the widest part of the oval about the same as the length of the lower lash line.XResearch source

This will be the iris.

3Add a small circle near the top of the oval. Draw the circle on the left or right side of the oval, near the top. It doesnt matter which side, but place the circle on the same side in the second eye if you’re drawing one. Make the circle about 1/10th the size of the iris.XResearch source

Youll leave this circle white later on so it looks like light is reflecting off of the eye.

Leave the small circles you drew white.

How to Draw Anime Boy Eyes

Draw auxiliary lines.

Determine the size of the eyes and draw two straight horizontal lines.

Depict the upper outline of the eyes.

Draw smooth lines on each side. Make sure the lines are symmetrical.

Sketch out the bottom of the eye.

Continue the lines in such a way that you get short spiky elements.

Add the outline of the iris.

Draw two straight semicircular lines.

Depict the pupils.

Draw small rounded lines in the middle of each eye.

Add details.

Sketch out highlights and outline the upper eyelid.

Draw the eyebrows.

Above each eye, draw thin eyebrows of the same shape as in the example.

Remove the guidelines.

Erase the auxiliary lines with an eraser.

Congratulations You Did It

Now color your drawing as you can see it in the picture.

Lets move to another example.

This is another example of female anime eyes, because there are lots of various anime which make it difficult to draw anime eyes, every time you need to learn. But if you keep learning how to draw and you keep painting everyday you wont need to learn anything again.

How To Draw The Face

There are different approaches you can take when drawing male anime faces. The position of the eyes, nose, and mouth in male characters are often near the bottom of the face. So thats where you should place these features.

We could have positioned the facial characteristics at the center of the face if we were drawing an anime girl.

Draw a horizontal line across the face. It will help you position the facial features correctly.

We want our character to look attractive, so were going to draw narrow, slanted eyes. Try not to make the eyes too narrow because the character will look older.

Slant the eyes towards the middle of the face and heavily outline the upper lids.

You should take your time when sketching the size of the eyes. The vertical and horizontal lines you drew earlier should help you with the placement.

Sketch the ears, mouth, and nose tip. You could make your character smile or play around with other expressions.

Clean up the drawing by erasing the unnecessary lines.

Add some hair based on the look you want. The hair could be long, short, groomed, or messy.

If you dont have a specific style in mind, you could give your character short, shaggy hair with long strands at the base of the neck.
