How to Draw Basic Anime Face Shapes (for beginners)

Whenever Ive run into a brick wall when attempting to design an original outfit for a character, my solution is to duplicate a characters head a few times and then doodle whatever shape that comes to my mind alongside each one. So Ill focus on a single shape a crescent or triangle, say and then design a costume which resembles that shape. This method works with hairstyles, too.

Draw The First Draft Of Facial Features

Lets also cut in from both sides of the circle, and create the area for where ears will go .

Okay, this next stage is super important, so keep your focus and energy to get through it. We will now begin to use the markers from Step 2, to carefully place features onto the face, in a very draft-like way.

If you are using a pencil, press lightly and focus more on the overall shape and placement of the feature rather than the details. Eyes can be styled to look like ovals, for now, the nose can be adjusted to just a simple extension of the face. The lips can be simplified as well. We are not looking to draw the final beautiful image we are simply looking to help our minds in the next stage. That is to say, we are placing down a brief sketch for the eyes, the nose, the lips, and ears, to use as an underdrawing in the next stage of the drawing.

It is completely okay, if, at the end of this stage, your drawing looks like a sketchy mess , as long as you can easily identify where you can draw over it.

Keep adjusting your lines and your sketch, to fit the style and expression you are going for. Stop when you are happy with your progress. You should feel like what you have is a good summation of what is to come in the next step. More importantly, you should feel like you have a good base to draw over confidently.

Pick An Iris Colour Based On Your Composition

Finally, I return to detailing the iris. Ill take a look at the overall picture and colours that Ive used and then decide what colour the iris of the character should be. Because the painting features predominantly red colours, I decide to go with a green colour for the eyes. I also save my white value for the very end, applying a little highlight to the eyes.

Draw The Basic Shapes

Alright, lets start very simple.

On your page, draw a circle. If you find it hard to draw a perfect circle, heres a tip: draw a horizontal and vertical line, perpendicular to each other, crossing at the center.

If you prefer, use a ruler. But Id say to do this without it. Your lines dont need to be 100% perfect and as you practice, youll see that theyll become better with time.

Now that you have your lines, draw the circle around them.

Alternatively, you can just practice a few circles on your page until you get the hang of it. Start with smaller circles and increase their size as you go.

Now the next step is to draw a square within our circle.

This might sound weird, but this square will determine the width of our face.

Were doing a pretty default face at the moment, but later on, well talk about how you can use your shapes, to draw different faces!

Alright, half of our head is done, now we need to find our chin.

Draw a vertical line, following the one you did for the circle, going down, with the same distance as the upper half of the face.

Where the line ends, thats where our chin will be!

Pretty simple right?

Draw The Eyes and Eyebrows

Lets start from top to bottom.

Place & Draw The Nose

When placing the nose you can again use the lines in the previous step. In this case its bottom will be on the same line as the bottom of the ears.

For drawing the bottom portion of the nose in the side view you can see the next step as its pretty much tied into drawing the lips.

When drawing the front view of the nose you can show it as two vertical lines. The little gap between these will indicate the tip. Make a shorter line for the bottom part of the nose and a longer one above it.

Male And Female Anime Faces

How to draw anime face shape

Although manga style faces are pretty feminine to begin with, there are certain ways to make the face look more masculine:

  • The eyebrows are placed low above the eyes.
  • The eyebrows may be thicker and less curved.
  • The eyes are narrower.
  • The eyelashes are minimal and less prominent.
  • The pupil is small and circular.
  • The lips are even less pronounced.
  • The jawline is more pronounced.
  • The neck is thicker.
  • The nose is more pronounced.

Of course, not all of these methods must be applied. Sometimes, the sex difference is shown only by the clothes and the hairstyle!

Rotation Of Anime Ears

Anime ears are very simple to draw, with one exception: if you see them from behind, their base becomes visible. It’s like a conch, and you must imagine it this wayyou can’t simply draw the ears the same way in every view, or they’ll look flat!

You can learn more about the structure of the ears and how to draw them here:

Ears are complicated, and they can be simplified in many ways:

Different Expressions Different Face Shapes

Depending on what kind of expression youre going for, the face will have different shapes.

For example, if youre drawing a surprised character, eyes growing big and a long O for the mouth, then the face will look more elongated.

On the other hand, if youre drawing someone angry, where the eyes and eyebrows grow close together and a closed mouth, maybe showing some teeth. Then we have the opposite effect.

Put yourself in front of a mirror and practice your expressions.

Take photos if you need to! Then, youll have tons of references for you to use in your drawings. If you prefer, you can even trace on top of your photos, so you can see clearly the differences in proportions and shapes, depending on the expression youre making!

Drawing An Anime Head And Face

  • 1Draw an oval and divide it into 4 sections. This will be the basic outline of your anime characters head. The proportions dont have to be exact, but make the oval narrower at the bottom since that will be the chin. Once youve drawn the oval, draw a horizontal line through the center of it. Then, draw a vertical line through the center of it that intersects with the horizontal line. Later, you’ll use these lines as guides to draw the facial features.XResearch source
  • If you want your character to have a wider face, widen the bottom of the oval so its just slightly narrower than the top. Or, if you want your character to have a slender face, make the bottom of the oval even narrower than the top. There’s no single head shape used for all anime characters, so you can experiment until you find one you like.
  • 3Sketch the eyebrows above the horizontal line. Draw a long, downward curving line for each eyebrow. Make them slightly longer than the upper lash line you drew for the eyes. Then, thicken the ends of the brows that are at the center of the face.XResearch source
  • If youre drawing a feminine anime character, make the eyebrows fairly thin. For a masculine character, thicken the eyebrows so theyre more prominent on the face.
  • Make the nose the smallest feature on your characters face.
  • The nose will overlap with the vertical line you drew. To see it better, make it darker than the vertical line, or erase the vertical line around the nose.

What Is The Difference Between Anime And Manga

It is worth pointing out the difference between these two styles. Anime is the animated version, while manga are just still images. Therefore, anime can be watched on TV, like a cartoon, while manga is similar to a comic book. Although some people argue that anime and manga can be just Japanese, there are a few anime shows, which are produced in the USA, but are still considered anime. Same goes for manga.

Now, in this article, we are going to consider each drawing of an anime or a manga character, as an anime drawing. Whats more, these drawings are very recognisable by their specific style, which we are also going to discuss.

    Drawing Anime Hands A Step

Learn Manga: emotions by *Naschi. How to draw manga face ...

The glove/mitten method stems from the fact that most of us can better imagine and draw a glove or a mitten than a detailed anime hand.

You dont have to worry about drawing in fingers. With this method, you only worry about the general shapes. Controlling general shapes is basis for all good drawing. That is to say, every great drawing starts with the artist having full control of the general shape of what they are drawing.

Start drawing anime hands with a simple boxy shape of a glove or a mitten. With this type of simplification fingers are indicated with one rectangular shape, then the simplified form is drawn over with more detail and by adding divisions of the fingers.

Above is a good example of how the glove/mitten method works.

When you draw the simplified form, think about the general shape of the hand, its proportions, the general gesture. Worry about the details on the second pass.

Above is an example of a very simplified form drawn for the fist. Note that, although the fingers twist down, I was able to draw that in later.

It was easier to draw because the general shape and perspective of the drawing was resolved in the simplified and boxy under-drawing on the left.

Note that all of the drawings of anime hands I made for the tutorial start with the general shape of the palm.

    Below are two more examples.
