On Frustration With Drawing An Anime Face Of A Girl

As I mentioned in the beginning of this tutorial, we should be ready for minute changes and adjustments. Sometimes, this can turn into hours of tinkering to try to develop a drawing of a face you like best, these hours of tinkering can end up feeling very frustrating. Then the whole practice of drawing can end up frustrating, and then well you dont want to do it anymore or you want to do it less often.

How do we battle that frustration? Well, first, if you really want to get better, you wont let that discourage you. However, there are some things we can do to help.

First, go into the drawing expecting some level of tinkering. As I mentioned at the outset, drawing a beautiful face is not just a difficult task, it is a task where very small changes produce extremely visible results. Therefore, moving or redrawing the left eye 1 2 millimeters to the left , can be the difference between a drawing you are proud of, and a drawing that feels off in some way.

That is okay, the minute details are just what it takes, get comfortable with it. Over time, you will learn systems that will help you with placement of features, you will get better at approximating where the eyes should be placed to get the result you want subconsciously , so just stick with it.

Anime ears are very simple to draw, with one exception: if you see them from behind, their base becomes visible. It’s like a conch, and you must imagine it this wayyou can’t simply draw the ears the same way in every view, or they’ll look flat!

You can learn more about the structure of the ears and how to draw them here:

Ears are complicated, and they can be simplified in many ways:

    Draw The Character’s Ears

To draw the ears of male anime and manga characters, first divide the head into four equal parts like the picture, draw the ear on the third part from the top, close to the chin.

With the view from the side, the ear will lie back to the back of the head.

Add small details to the character’s ears, because unlike women, the ears of female characters are often covered by hair so they don’t need to be too fussy in this part.

Start With A Flat Colour When Painting Eyes

When sketching and drawing the eyes, paint the whole iris as a flat colour. It can be the same colour as your sketch brush. Painting the whole iris during the sketch phase will help make the sizes of both irises consistent with each other. It also makes it easier to compare and check whether both irises are the same size or not.

    Experiment With Different Methods

Above is a method of constructing the head with a rounded-edge box instead of the traditional egg shape. I also use the same method to draw three fantasy characters. I skew and manipulate the human skull proportions to fit fantastical characters. Make the eyes smaller, the jaw bigger, or even enlarge the nose. You can use different construction methods to either draw people in a similar style or draw different styled characters, all using the same construction method. Its all about finding the form of the subject that youre drawing. There are many methods of constructing heads, I would suggest testing and trying every one of them that you can find out there! Find a method that suits your art, or develop one for yourself.

Use A Swimming Cap For Head Angles

Drawing a swimming cap can help you to determine the angle of the head. Visualise a swimming cap with a seam in the middle and put that on your character. By covering all your characters hair and ears, you can now focus on drawing the facial features. Furthermore, you can use the caps edge as the hairline, and because swimming caps cover the ears, I can draw the ears behind this edge with confidence, thus placing them in the right position.

How to draw anime head shape

This is a very good art tutorial on how to draw the manga head from the side view.

The artist explains her drawing process pretty nicely, and its easy to follow through. What I like about this tutorial is that the artist is explaining the differences between the female and male heads.

When we think about reality and how our heads differ from male to female, you dont notice so much difference. Yes, a male might have a bit more prominent chin than females, but overall we look about the same.

However, in the manga, there is a clear difference between male and female heads and faces, and in this video, the artist brings those differences up in a really nice and clear way.

Keep The Drawing Of The Eyes Simple

The curvature of the eyeball makes it complicated to draw at an angle and symmetrically, so keeping it simple will improve your skill at drawing realistic eyes quickly and relatively easily. Furthermore, take note of the shape of your characters eyes. Does the eye have an inward or downward tilt? Is the iris normally small or large? These will help you sketch your characters eyes at more complex angles.

Use An Arrow To Place Key Facial Features

How to draw A manga head

After blocking out the head I decide which direction the character is facing. Treating the head as a 3D shape, I draw a horizontal line that curves along the surface. When I draw this line I bear in mind whether the head is tilted upwards or downwards, or facing left or right. To fix the direction of the head then Ill draw an upwards pointing arrow . This helps me locate where the nose bridge meets the root of the nose. Once this key location of the face has been identified, I can quickly paint and sketch in the centreline for the face, eyes, eyebrows, mouth and chin .

    Tips For Practicing Drawing

Here are some quick tips that will help you improve your drawing rapidly in a short period of time:

    • Practice Daily

    • Use a system of practice like the worksheets on this site or any other system you find useful such as drawing from photo reference 20mins per day

    • Review your own work: take a photo of your drawings using your phone and flip the image horizontally using editing software to see mistakes. This method can help you re-see the image because we tend to overlook mistakes due to our brains getting used to the drawing.

    • Take time to doodle and have fun, never get too caught up in improving at the cost of the enjoyment that comes with drawing.

Shade The Hair And Add The Chin

Hair is typically shiny, so, therefore, shaded with high contrast. The shading can be the difference of making hair look Manga-tastic or taking you back to square one. It goes without saying, the better the pen and the stronger technique you have, the more likely it is that youre going to produce the best results. Click here to read more about which pens are best used for shading.

TIP: Use photographic reference for help on highlighting hair.

Draw lines that curve slightly inward down from the chin. These simple lines form your characters neck. Men usually have thicker necks than women, so bear that in mind. The age also determines the neck as in Manga, very old and very young males are drawn with skinny necks. You can shade the neck if you like but keep it simple and dont overdo it.

From here, you can use a Chameleon Art Products Detail Pen to make permanent line drawings, an eraser to remove the pencil lines and use a Chameleon Pen and its innovative Mixing Chamber to shade the hair.
