How To Draw Anime Facial Hair Beards & Mustaches
This tutorial looks at drawing anime facial hair including beards, mustaches and sideburns. Just as other facial features a particular style of facial hair can help emphasize a certain type of character.
There are many ways to draw anime or manga style facial hair. This tutorial goes over some of the more basic and simplified examples. It can be especially helpful if you are a beginner artist.
Draw The Top/back Of The Spiky Hair
As mentioned before the back/top parts of this hairstyle will have a combined shape that resembles a flame.
To create the flame shape draw the hair clumps smaller and shorter starting from above the ears and getting generally larger and longer as they go up to the top of the head.
The clumps should also gradually transition away from the head and point more upwards the farther up you draw them. At the same time still try and randomize the size and direction of each clump.
Drawing An Anime Full Beard
To draw a full beard first draw the overall shape of the hair as described in the previous example. After that you can somewhat project the hair downwards and eventually draw some branching out clumps on the ends. Draw the clumps pointing in different direction for a more natural look.
This type of facial hair could be a good fit for a character that has been out in the wilderness for a while away from civilization.

How To Draw Manga Hair Of A Female Character
Anime hair is often based on real hairstyles but is drawn in tufts rather than individual strands. An important reason for this is that it would be too time-consuming if you draw several single images of a manga with too much detail.
A good way to learn how to draw anime hair efficiently is to divide the hairstyle into several parts. First the front part of the hairstyle, then the sides and then the back/bottom .
Lets see how you can draw a typical anime hairstyle for girls. The figure has diagonal bangs on the front and a braid hanging down the back of the head.

The first few steps are similar to the ones we followed when drawing anime hair for girls.

This is arguably the most popular hairstyle that Anime/Manga protagonists have. A few of the Anime characters that have this hairstyle are Naruto Uzumaki , Ichigo Kurosaki , NatsuDragneel , and Izuku Midoriya .

To draw the top of the hair, follow the guidelines and create hair clumps flaring upward and outward.
Create more of these hair clumps until it reaches approximately between the ear and the neck.
Add a few hair clumps around the hair randomly. Make sure youre still following the curves of the hair strands around the hairline. Finish the drawing and erase the guidelines.

Direction Of Hair Growth
As anime hair is a simplified version of real hair its a good idea to also have a basic idea of how hair actually grows. The above example is a male head but the same would apply to a female head as well.
Hair starts out in a spiral from the top/back part of the head and grows mainly in the following directions:
- top hair grows mainly forward
- back hair grows mainly downwards
- sides hair grows mainly downwards
Fill The Shadow With The Character
You can add some very basic nuances to the drawing to make the work more prominent, shaded for some areas needed, for example:
Shadow poured from hair to forehead and sides of face

This step by step tutorial explains how to draw an anime boy with a detailed breakdown of the proportions of the body and general tips on achieving an anime look.
The boy in this tutorial can be anywhere from 10-15 years old. Depending on the artists style sometimes older anime characters can be drawn to still look fairly young. Generally the more stylized the characters the younger they tend to look .
Please keep in mind that the proportions below are just suggestions and can vary depending on character and style.

For drawing hair that is blowing in the wind see:
Add The Sausages And Eggs
The Neil Buchanan class is the very reason I got hooked to Art Attack! We know how the eggs are for rounder body parts, and the sausages are for limbs. All we need to do now is to use the wire frames as guides, like a skeleton.
After we get our sausages and eggs in place, we may get rid of the wire frames.

Draw The Mouth Of The Character
Finally, locate the lower lip of the mouth with a line between the tip of the nose and chin, and then draw the upper lip a bit above.
The lower lip will be a short stroke, the upper lip is longer, is a gentle curve, breaking a small fold in the middle. Note that the male character will have a wider mouth than the female character
Draw The Front Section Of The Hair
One important thing to note is that when drawing hair blowing in the wind the base of each section should not really move .
Draw the front section with the base of the clumps starting from roughly the same spot as in the previous example but draw the shapes of the clumps swinging in the direction of the wind.
In this case the hair will be blowing forward and slightly to the left in relation to the head.

Draw The Top/back Of The Combed Back Hair
The back/top part in this case is somewhat complex as hair that has been combed back like this will tend to create all kinds of small bumps and clumps.
When drawing these bumps try to position them in a way where their combined shape still has a consistent flow to it. Meaning that you dont get one part that is very close to the head and one that really far away from it. There should be a gradual transition where the bumps and clumps are closer to the head around the ears and farther away from it at the top.
Try and make the hair bumps around the upper area of the head somewhat random in shape with some being much bigger and other being much smaller but keep the bumps above the ears generally small.
Draw a few pointy clumps in between the bumps as well. You can draw most of them with a bit of a wave.

Son Gokus Super Saiyan Hair is one of the most iconic hairstyles out there, and here are step-by-step instructions and illustrations that will teach you how to draw it.

Add more hair clumps in between the front and top of the hairline.
Clean up the lines that went over the hair clumps that youve just drawn.
Add more details by drawing lines from the end of each hair clump going towards the middle of the hair.

Draw The Top/back Of The Buzz Cut
Finally draw the top/back part of the buzz cut hair. Depending on how short you want this to be you can even leave this step out. If the hair is almost completely shaved you can just use the outline of the head to define its top.
In this case the hair will be slightly longer so it will be draw with just a little bit of volume. To do this draw the hair pretty much hugging the shape of the head starting from the top of the ears gradually moving away from it towards the top.
Draw The Front Of The Medium Long Hair
Begin the drawing of the actual hair by adding the part that goes down the middle of the face. It can start from about the top of the head and go down to around the tip of the nose . Draw this part as two combined clumps that curve in opposite directions forming a bit of an x shape near their bottom as they overlap. You can also draw some small splits into each clump to make the hair look a little more natural.

The shape of the top of the head in anime and manga is often fairly close to the shape of a real head but can also vary depending on style.
From the side view the head can be drawn in a slight oval shape . From the front view the top of the head is close to a half circle.
In this tutorial we will not go into drawing the different facial features and other parts of the head as that is already covered in other tutorials.
