Capture Expressions In Cartoons Sketches
The key expressive features of the human face comprise the mouth, eyebrows and eyes. When I draw a figure that has a particular emotion Ill first doodle a cartoon-like image of the expression that I have in mind. After this sketch is complete, Ill try to pick out certain facial aspects within the expression. Is the mouth open? Are the teeth clenched? What do the eyebrows look like in the simple expression? Ill take note of those features and keep them in mind while I draw a refined version of the characters design on top of the initial sketch.

Innate Practice is the practice you inherently get when you consistently draw.
Whether you are actively trying to improve or not, the act of consistent and repeated action over time will improve your ability to draw.
It is the type of practice people recommend when they say you should take up a daily sketching habit.
Whether you like it or not, if you commit to a daily drawing practice you are going to see an improvement.
This type of practice is less about actively expanding your skillset and more about volume. It is creating, often at a skill level you are familiar with, at volume.

Use An Arrow To Place Key Facial Features
After blocking out the head I decide which direction the character is facing. Treating the head as a 3D shape, I draw a horizontal line that curves along the surface. When I draw this line I bear in mind whether the head is tilted upwards or downwards, or facing left or right. To fix the direction of the head then Ill draw an upwards pointing arrow . This helps me locate where the nose bridge meets the root of the nose. Once this key location of the face has been identified, I can quickly paint and sketch in the centreline for the face, eyes, eyebrows, mouth and chin .

Dont Compare Yourself To The Masters
Another very common beginners mistake. You can compare your drawing to other drawings from a good artist but don´t discourage yourself.
So often I see beginners artists that finish a drawing and then ook up their favorite artist online and compare it line by line. Just to say, that their drawing sucks and they have to learn more and try harder etc.. This behavior will not help you and it will discourage you more than motivate you.
So look at your drawings and constructively think, what you could have done better and also what you did well on that drawing.

Lets Put It Into Practice
I will go step by step explaining the process of this drawing and the CSP tools that I used to solve certain problems.
In my mind, this drawing is full of energy, and maybe a little rebellious, because she looks like a bit of a bad girl, right? So lets give the lines the same attitude.
I start off by lowering the opacity of the sketch and create a new layer. I usually start with the features of the face, but this sketch isnt very clear so I have to find a line that works. If I find it difficult to start with the jawline, then I start with the nose. Normally when I figure out how to draw one thing, it is easier to draw the next one theres no strict order when you draw!
I accentuated the outline of the nose to give it some relief and shade, then moved onto the jaw.

But heres the crux: if you get inspiration from just one type of reference image, you might as well just be copying.
Instead, I suggest that you have a look around your favorite manga and anime artists and art pieces to try and find the things that really appeal to you aesthetically.
You might love the way that this one anime artist draws his characters hair. You may be impressed by that one manga artists use of facial expressions.
Maybe the landscape art of this artist is what inspired you to draw manga and anime in the first place
Gather reference images that inspire you from lots of different sources: the ones that inspire you in terms of characters, others in terms of objects, landscapes, clothes
The art that youll put together from these images will be completely unique to you: itll reflect the things that you enjoy, and it wont look like it has been copied.
Study The Anime Style

Drawing anime characters is great. But if you are a total beginner to drawing in general you should start by learning the basics. Practice drawing simple things like straight lines and basic shapes like circles and squares. This can be boring at times but will help you improve.

Expressions For Anime Eyes
In real life and in the manga/anime world, eyes are one of the most important features to express emotion. Remember that a series of facial muscles tighten or relax, depending on the expression you want to achieve.Lets take a look at the eyelids, the inner eye, and the eyebrows.
The emotions intended in these examples are easy to understand.
In example 1, the eyebrow is a bit tense, but the eye is relaxed and shining. This conveys a worried state or maybe missing someone or something.
In example 2, the eyebrow is arched vertically, and the eye is closed, so we can deduce that the character is happy.
In the next example , there is no shine to the eye, the iris is completely white, and the pupil is reduced significantly. This shows that the character is aggressive. Note that the eyebrow is arched in the opposite direction of the happy one in example 2, which also signifies anger.
Let us check all these expressions to deduce their meaning: 4 is suspicion, 5 is worry, 6 is neutral or observing, 7 is shock, 8 is sadness, and 9 is shock or madness, depending on the situation.

Draw From Direct Observation
The ability to produce a 2D representation of a 3D object is an essential skill of any artists.
And it isnt easy.
The task of replicating what you see in a 3D space and producing it on a 2D piece of paper as a representation of 3D space uses a part of our brain that needs to be exercised repeatedly.
Nobody is good at life drawing at first. It is not something people do naturally. As artists, it is something we need to learn and practice.
Ever heard the saying Draw what you see, not what you know? This is what we are training our brain to do.
Now, by this stage, you might be thinking, Aaaaah drawing fruit and cups is soooo boring.
It doesnt have to be. Ultimately, you get to choose what you draw.
- Pick interesting items to draw. What looks cool or has an interesting texture?
- Set up your lighting so you get interesting shadows and forms. A simple desk lamp beside your collection of objects can make a massive difference.
- Go to a life drawing class and socialize.

There is no doubt that working from a photo reference is convenient and easy, BUT it can also lead to the development of bad habits.
You want to master the ability to translate 3D space to 2D space. A photograph is already in 2D.
