Is It Worth Starting One Piece 20 Years Late
Ill be honest with you, it depends. Do you like fun, adventure, and the vicarious thrill of watching really bad guys get punched in the face? Then absolutely, get started today. How about loveable characters who are a little bit broken inside pursuing their dreams and standing together against oppressive rulers? Youll adore the Straw Hat crew and their family-like bond as they defy the World Government. Do you exclusively read the romance genre? Stick to shoujo unless youre willing to do a lot of extra-curricular reading via fanfiction and doujinshi. How do you feel about heavily stylized character design? If you need realism, One Piece is probably not the show for you.
I could go on, but it really comes down to this: One Piece is an adventure. Either you want to join the Straw Hat Pirates on their journey or you dont. Some people just dont and thats okay. For everyone else, theres Mastercard this guide.
If Im Bored To Death Within 3
This is a HARD rule to live by. And the reason is simple:
- If you drop an within 3-5 episodes, how do you know if it could have gotten better?
The truth is you dont. Ive watched 100s of anime shows. Ive dropped over 100 as well.
Some anime shows are too slow. Its like a driver with their foot on the break, cruising. Mushishi felt like that for me.
And as harsh as this rule is its mostly worked well for me. And it stops me from wasting too much time on an anime

Finding A Much Better Less Horny Groove
At this point, I questioned what I was looking for in an anime. Did I want comedy or did I want something serious? Did I want an action-packed adventure or more of a slice of life story? Anime is so incredibly broad, that I had to narrow my focus. This eventually led me to Cells at Work! CODE BLACK–which I later found out was actually a spinoff.
Cells at Work! CODE BLACK featured anthropomorphic white and red blood cells, attempting to maintain the human body. Even though this show was a continuation of the original, I never felt alienated from it. CODE BLACK did a fine job at explaining the world to someone who has no idea what’s going on, and the show was exciting and interesting.
That being said, it didn’t excite me. It wasn’t something I got pumped to watch, and that’s what I wanted to find. I want to find an anime that I want to talk to everyone about–one that will unite me with other anime fans in the gigantic community. I tried Psycho-Pass and All Out!! next, and I stared at the titles for Hensuki: Are You Willing to Fall in Love with a Pervert, as Long as She’s a Cutie and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Senpai–wondering who came up with those bizarre titles.

Should You Watch Dragon Ball Gt
Dragon Ball GT mostly contains character-building arcs which are not very important. Most Dragon Ball fans dont suggest you watching Dragon Ball GT. I also recommend you to skip this season and watch a few other seasons directly. You can watch it if you think you will miss something but it is rather not that necessary.

Anime is more mainstream than it has ever been in its history. Look all around you and you’ll see anime DVDs being sold from every outlet alongside merchandise as far as the eye can see. In fact, I would argue that now is the absolute best time to get into anime for that very reason!
The issue is that by this point, anime is already over 50 years old, which means there are literally thousands of titles to sift through with another couple of dozen being added to that list every three months. Anime isn’t a short sprint, anime is a lifelong marathon of always being behind in your viewing . So, faced with a seemingly insurmountable mountain ahead of you, how does one even begin? Monogatari Series Chronological Order
One of the best things about the Monogatari series is the fact that it has tons of rewatch value. Only a handful of anime can match it in this regard. If you’ve finished all of the series for the first time, you might feel excited to watch everything again. This time around, however, you may want to mix things up a bit to improve the flow of the story.
For viewers who are already familiar with the plot and characters, the best way to watch Monogatari is by following the chronological order. Doing so fills any gaps in the story and provides you with a better viewing experience.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride
This animated series takes place in a magical version of modern England, where Celtic and Scandanavian monsters and fairies live unseen in the wilds, far beyond human civilization. It’s almost like a fairy tale out there.
Viewers can easily relate to the familiar critters of this series, from a church grim to dragons and the famed Titania and Oberon. That and the fascinating skull-headed Elias can make for a compelling watch, all in 24 episodes.

Should You Start At The Beginning
With many franchises, it’s tempting to just say, “Start at the beginning!” In this case, that means either the Monkey Punch manga or the first anime adaptation, Lupin the Third: Part I. In both cases, while this is the logical starting point, it also might not be the best point for new entrants to the series.
The original manga, which ran for 94 chapters collected in 14 volumes, is a classic, but it’s also dated. Modern readers unaccustomed to retro manga from this era might find Monkey Punch’s style a little too stilted to their liking. However, the bigger issue is that the original manga conflicts tonally with modern Lupin thanks to its focus on crime over humor. This is mainly because Monkey Punch based his Lupin on the classic French gentleman thief character, Arsene Lupin, as well as on James Bond. In order to pay tribute to both, Monkey Punch played up the womanizing thief angle more than the zany adventure angle.
The Two Best Entry Points
Many fans seem to agree that the two best points to get into the series are 1977’s Lupin the Third: Part II and 2015’s Lupin the Third: Part IV.
Lupin the Third: Part II was the start of the Red Suit era of Lupin, and built off the strengths of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata‘s work on Part I . The series presented a far more lively spirit of adventure to Lupin’s character, softening his morality in the process. While Part II still presents Lupin as essentially selfish and self-serving, there is a lot more heart to his character than before, which would carry through in later series.
However, when Miyazaki made the film The Castle of Cagliostro, he made Lupin an even more good-hearted character, arguably pushing Lupin’s morality a little too far out of a character. It’s wise to watch Castle of Cagliostro after Part II for this reason, since it might be more jarring to see Lupin’s more morally gray actions in the series coming off the film. It also doesn’t help that, since Cagliostro sees Lupin wearing his Part I Green Suit, it feels aesthetically divorced from Part II.
By contrast, Lupin the Third: Part IV: The Italian Adventure is a more modern reimagining of the character. While the previous Lupin stories were more episodic in nature, this series is one complete narrative spread over 26 episodes. The 2015 series successfully tells a self-contained story that requires little background knowledge to appreciate or understand what’s happening.

For Those Who Enjoy Some Philosophy With Their Science Fiction:
Neon Genesis Evangelion Hideaki Anno, 1995-1996
Chances are, if you’re interested in anime, you’ve probably seen something from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The story of the Second Impact, NERV and the Angels is one of the most highly praised works of its kind, and while it has its fair share of genre staples, it’s a near-perfect example of how anime is more than just spiky hair and energy beams.
On the surface, Neon Genesis Evangelion may look like another giant robot anime, but it’s how the show deals with its introspective themes and character relationships that sets it apart from most other shows. Evangelion gets deep, and it’s not going to hold your hand – that’s what makes it so good.

Beginner Anime Cheat Sheet
It’s entirely possible, however, that the entire reason you’re reading this article, to begin with, is that you don’t want to do a lot of research into what to watch. You just know that you have a passing interest in the hobby and want to check something out to see if it’s right for you. That’s totally fair.
In that case, here are a few starter titles from various genres to help kick start your journey into the world of anime:
Comedy is the hardest genre to recommend anything for because humor is such a subjective form of entertainment. Despite this, here are a couple of laugh out loud funny titles that are suitable for beginners:
The Devil is a Part-Timer – In this series, the main character is a demon king who rules over the world of Ente Isla with an iron fist. When the hero Emilia chases him from his world to Japan, the now-former demon king must get a job in a fast-food restaurant in order to survive.
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War – This romantic comedy is all about making the other person figuratively tap out and admit their romantic feelings for the other. Following the top two students at an elite school, Kaguya and Miyuki, who lead the student council as vice president and president, respectively. The good news about these two is that they are in love with each other. The bad news is that they both have too much pride to be the first to admit it. Thus begins an eternal battle of wits to see which one can make the other confess first.

Next Stop: Space Dandy
Without looking back at Prison School, I found Space Dandy. I liked the title. The star of the show had a cool pompadour. This time around, I read the details for it, and nothing seemed alarming. Also, it was only two seasons, so this is something I could watch without feeling bogged down by the weight of hundreds of episodes.
Space Dandy follows the titular Dandy, a bounty hunter who travels through space, searching for aliens. Of course, he’s being pursued by Dr. Gel.
Once again, Space Dandy’s theme music was right up my alley and got me pumped for the show. Very quickly–but not as outlandishly as Prison School–I found out that Space Dandy was also a pretty horny series, especially when the first major stop for the titular character was a space restaurant named “Boobies.”
For Those Who Love A Mix Of Science And Magic:
Fullmetal Alchemist: BrotherhoodHiromu Arakawa, 2009-2010
While there are plenty of fans who still prefer the original Fullmetal Alchemist, the fact that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood follows the plot of the original manga makes it the better option for fans just diving in.
And, after diving in, fans will find one of the most well-defined fictional universes in recent memory. The series’ narrative focus and high-brow themes of philosophy and ethics are complemented wonderfully by a relatively light-hearted cast of characters and some legitimately funny moments. For all its war and scientific abominations, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is still a fun anime to watch … most of the time.
