Where To Watch Anime Live Action

Youre Gonna Carry That Weight

Top 20 Anime You Didn’t Know Had Live Action Adaptations

Netflixs live-action Cowboy Bebop remake at first seems like a strange interpretation of the anime. However, over time it reveals it has little interest in living up to the original and is simply fulfilling the requirements needed to fit the Netflix Original two-season series model. Presumably, one fateful day the Netflix algorithm commanded: BEEP-BOOP! COWBOY BEBOP REMAKE = $$$! and the rest followed from there.

All the pre-release info about this remake now rings disingenuous. Wed been told that, from the actors to the crew, there were superfans of the anime working on this, that they believed there were more stories to tell in the Bebop universe, and that they made a point of drawing from the animes cinematic inspirations. In actuality, all this remake appears to be inspired by is other Netflix shows.

It only makes sense to compare a remake to the original but, if I try to separate it anyway and assess this on its own, it would still be a tonally-confused, low-quality show. This is Netflix chaff. This is the kind of series they shovel into the web en masse that quickly and quietly disappears into the folds of their impossibly vast show catalog. Unfortunately, its Netflix chaff that happens to share its title with one of the best anime series ever made.

Crime Live Action Anime Adaptation Films

City Hunter

In addition to this Hong Kong film starring none other than international superstar Jackie Chan, City Hunter was also adapted into a Korean TV series.

Crying Freeman

A joint collaboration between French and Canadian studios, the movie adapts the “Portrait of a Killer” story arc of the Crying Freeman manga.

Female Convict 701: Scorpion

Based on Sasori, it was followed up by three more films: Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41, Female Convict Scorpion: Beast Stable, and Female Convict Scorpion: Grudge Song. The entire series is a prime example of the “women in prison” genre of 1970s exploitation films.

Golgo 13

Known as the oldest manga still in publication, Golgo 13 spawned two live action anime adaptation films about the titular assassin for hire. The second is Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon.

Ichi the Killer

Infamous for its graphic violence and depictions of extreme cruelty, the live action movie adaptation of Ichi the Killer was directed by none other than the controversial Takashi Miike.

Lupin III Strange Psychokinetic Strategy

Other live action adaptations of Lupin III include a film simply titled Lupin III which premiered in 2014, forty years after Strange Psychokinetic Strategy. Talk about longevity!

Oldboy

Sukeban Deka

In The Works: One Piece

Lastly, I would like to talk about the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates! My brothers favorite anime of all time, theres even less known about One Piece than there is about Cowboy Bebop, as there still isnt even a cast list for this film. Instead, all Netflix says is a live-action pirate adventure story based on the bestselling manga by Eiichiro Oda. Okay, well, at least curious viewers will know that the show is about pirates.

Im not really sure what I want out of a One Piece live-action show. Ive seen very little of the series, and all I know is that theres this kid named Monkey D. Luffy who has stretchy limbs since he eats this Devil Fruit, and he wants to be the Pirate King. Hey, if the live-action version is fun and funny, then Ill check it out. My brother and my good friend, James, live by the show, so maybe a live-action version could tempt me to watch more of the anime.

And, that’s about it. I didn’t mention Kakegurai since that’s a series and more of a commitment, but that’s on Netflix, too. I also didn’t mention the potential Sword Art Online live-action show, because we haven’t really heard a word about that since 2018. But, if we hear any new news on SAO, we’ll let you know. For information on the best shows on Netflix that aren’t anime related, or just Netflix TV shows in general, makes sure to stop by often!

Jojos Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter I

Hirohiko Arakis Jojos Bizarre Adventure series has turned into one of the biggest hits in anime . The series features spirit-like entities known as stands that aid their fighters in battle. Due to the eccentric nature of the series action and the increasingly exaggerated nature of the content, it was a title that many people naturally assumed would never get the live-action treatment. Once again Takashi Miike steps into the fray and produces a surprisingly authentic and satisfying adaptation of the Diamond is Unbreakable Series. Miike attempts to cram a ton into the film and it does feel bloated, but its nuts how well hes able to replicate the animes characters and their outlandish world. After pulling off Jojo, it feels like Miike could properly execute any anime title.

Lets just hope that a Chapter II ends up happening so audiences can get live-action Kira, Jojos craziest serial killer!

The 13 Best Live Action Anime Movies That Are Worth Watching

I just mentioned how there are a lot worse live-action anime movies out there than Bleach, but Rurouni Kenshin: The Final isnt one of them. In fact, it may be the best live-action anime Ive ever seen. There are actually five Rurouni Kenshin movies, with The Final being the fourth, and the fifth being a prequel called The Beginning. Ive never read the manga, but Im told that this film covers the final arc of the story. Its about a wandering swordsman named Himura Kenshin who used to be an assassin, but he wants to atone for his former life of violence. Unfortunately, like Michael Corleone of The Godfather, he gets pulled back in after his favorite restaurant is destroyed, killing many.

Theres more to it than just that, but Rurouni Kenshin: The Final works because its that rare instance where a movie takes itself seriously and it actually works. The action is also mind blowing. I love samurai flicks, and Rurouni Kenshin: The Final is one of the best Ive ever seen. If you watch only one movie on this list, watch this one.

Lets Jam: A Snappy Update

A lot has happened since the original Cowboy Bebop launched in 1998.

The original anime already mixed genres, so its only fitting that the live-action Netflix take would keep that tradition alive, sometimes even ramping it up. The noir elements especially feel cranked up to 11 in the new show, and that fits well with the fleshed-out backstories of Spike and Jet in particular.

Cowboy Bebop does its own thing while staying true to its source material.

The imagery often evokes the French comic book tradition, with sets, costumes, and technology looking like they could have been lifted from Barbarella or The Fifth Element. This fits well with the shows successful attempts to reinvent itself without straying too far from its source material. Episodes are stretched in length, with runtimes closer to an hour than the originals half-hour outings . That extra time allows for an episodic structure combined with the streaming ages focus on ongoing, season-long narratives, and its a welcome shift.

Theres also a brutality to the bounty hunting work of Spike and Jet early in the season that gives the pair a compelling moral ambiguity. Theyre rough with their marks, and theyre not too concerned with who wants them for what. Theyre good at what they do, and they need the money, and thats pretty much as far as their professional honor goes. They fit well into the tradition of Han Solo .

Fell Flat: Dragon Ball Evolution

While Netflix’s Death Note is the new age anime adaptation that has made the genre as a whole laughable and started a plethora of memes, Dragon Ball Evolution is definitely the originator of horrible live-action anime adaptations. This movie is utterly awful and showcases the cast of Dragon Ball in a modern-day, early 2000s setting, full of spikey gelled hair, high school parties, and first crushes. The movie is just really, really bad and definitely doesn’t know what it is doing at any point in time and is far from the source material, not to mention the whitewashing of all the characters.

The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K

While many live-action adaptations tend to change many aspects of the source material, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K was not concerned with pulling theatrical punches. This was one of the main reasons the reception of the film itself was so mixed during its premiere stages, and why critics still can’t agree on how the film panned out.

Regardless of the overall reception, the live-action adaptation does not stray at all from the narrative held within the manga and anime. Throughout the events of the film, the aesthetic and pacing can be described as erratic or just plain crazy. This may be a surprise to many expecting a more realistic depiction of the characters, but the mannerisms of people like Saiki are very on-brand with his anime counterpart.

    Death Note

Other live action anime films of Death Note include Death Note: The Last Note and L: Change the World.

    Tomie

Tomie has inspired a live action film series consisting of 8 installments to date, with the other 7 being: Tomie: Replay, Tomie: Re-birth, Tomie: Forbidden Fruit, Tomie: Beginning, Tomie: Revenge, Tomie vs Tomie, and Tomie: Unlimited.

    Uzumaki

    Now Streaming: Death Note

The 2017 version of Death Note, which is directed by Godzilla Vs. Kongs Adam Wingard and stars Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield, Willem Dafoe and many others, is about a teenager named Light Turner who finds a notebook that can literally kill anybody if he just writes their name in it. But the notebook actually belongs to the god of death, named Ryuk , who encourages Light to start racking up the bodies, which you know, doesnt end up well.

I hear theres a 2006 Japanese version thats actually pretty good, but this Americanized version wasnt that great. For me, anyway. Theres just too much of a focus on the detective side of this story after the killings occur, and it gets a little boring midway through. The anime itself is actually pretty short, so if the concept sounds interesting to you, maybe just watch that instead.

Released during the prime JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure era in 2017, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter 1 was swarmed by the vast amount of anime and manga fans familiar with the successful series. Even on the more merciless critic websites like Rotten Tomatoes, the live-action adaptation got a majority of positive reviews centering around the film’s effects and uniqueness.

The movie manages to capture the style, costumes, and colorful environments of the manga and anime. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Chapter 1 is often regarded as one of the best live-action adaptations of an anime series in history, and for good reason.

Best Live Action Film Adaptations Of Anime

That isn’t to say live-action anime adaptations are not good, it just so happens that they’re more difficult to pull off successfully.

    Now Streaming: Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist is weird even by anime standards. Its about a young alchemist named Edward and his younger brother named Alphonse. They try to bring their dead mother back to life through alchemy, but this is a big no-no, and our hero loses a leg and his younger brother unfortunately loses his whole body. But, not his soul, as Edward quickly throws his brothers soul into a nearby suit of armor, and now, Edward vows to restore Alphonses soul to his body. So, yeah. Like I said, weird.

The movie itself isfine. Its just fine. It follows the first series closely enough and the action is interesting to say the very least. It doesnt have the best pacing though, and by the end of it, youre kind of wondering where a lot of the story went, since it kind of jumps to the homunculi stuff pretty quickly. Overall, I can tolerate Fullmetal Alchemist, but you might just be better off watching the anime, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
