Somali And The Forest Spirit

Top 10 New Anime To Watch For 2021

Release date: January 9Director: Kenji YasudaAnimation production: SatelightIf your tastes veer more towards the whimsical fare of Studio Ghibli than explicitly action-oriented titles, Somali and the Forest Spirit is a perfect choice. Set in a world of magic and sorcery populated by spirits, goblins, and all sorts of creatures, the series follows the journey of a forest-protecting golem and their companion, a precocious child named Somali. Together, the two embark on a search for a home for Somali among the last of the humans, a race of beings previously thought to have been persecuted and hunted to the brink of extinction ages ago. Think Alphonse and Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, but instead of two brothers in search of the philosopher’s stone to restore their bodies, it’s a father figure and their adoptive ward searching for safety and security in a world of dangers at every turn. With exquisite backgrounds, disarming humor, and a story with genuine emotional pull, Somali and the Forest Spirit is a spirited fable of parenthood and love found in the most unlikely of circumstances.

Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku

First aired: 2019 | Episodes: 11Where to watch it: Amazon Prime

Hirotaka and Narumi are two office workers who used to go to the same middle school together. So far so normal. But they actually have something else in common they both are terrible nerds, to the point its made it impossible for them to enter a lasting relationship, because their partners just wouldnt understand. Once Narumi and Hirotaka discovers this about each other, they decide to date on the spot. After all, it sounds quite efficient to have someone who will play MMOs with you, who will make sure you wont miss limited edition merchandise and who you can discuss your favourite anime with. But is that all it takes to date?

WotaKoi is such fun because it exemplifies something we all want someone to share our likes and interests with, or who at least understands them. Hirotaka and Narumi enter what at first seems like a relationship of convenience, but thats because they actually dont know how to date and because their time-consuming hobbies get in the way. Its also nice to see a show affirm the joy of having a hobby even as an adult, even though WotaKoi makes its protagonists seem a little too into things.

So, that leaves us with the question of what you should get. Well, if you dabble in anime, then Hulu and Netflix might be good enough. They are good . . . but if youre an anime addict, or if you suspect you might become one, then you can get VRV for $10 and Funimation for $6. Thats $16 a month for more anime than you could ever possibly consume if youre also a functioning and contributing member of society.

And one last notethis is about HBO Maxweve talked about the coming rollout of HBO Max, and were not sure how this is gonna shake out for anime fans because Crunchyroll has been listed as part of the content lineup for HBO Max. AT& T owns both so that makes sense, but it also owns VRV, so will the rest of VRVs content also be available on HBO Max, will Crunchyroll ever be an HBO Max exclusive?

As of now, we dont know the answer to these questions or how this is all gonna fit together, so were gonna have to keep an eye on it.

Natsume’s Book Of Friends

First aired: 2008 | Episodes: 74Where to watch: Crunchyroll

Growing up hasn’t been easy for Natsume, because he’s an orphan, and also because he can see yokai, or spirits, that no one else can. This makes him a bit of an outcast, but when he inherits a book from his late grandmother, his life suddenly makes a lot more sense. She could see spirits, too, and “bound” many of them to her in the Book of Friends, which is why they now hound poor Natsume.

The simple premise of the show is that Natsume seeks out these spirits in order to restore their names to them and unbind them. It’s a show that manages to be melancholy and heartwarming from episode to episode and even moment to moment. It’s a slice-of-life series with a touch of the supernatural, but what makes it great is how it uses those supernatural encounters to tell human stories. Getting to watch Natsume grow across many seasons keeps the formula from feeling rote.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken

Release date: January 5Director: Masaaki YuasaAnimation production: Science SaruBased on Sumito wara’s manga series of the same name, Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! follows high schooler Midori and her friends Sayaka and Tsubame as they attempt to establish an anime club on their school’s campus and produce their own animated film. What follows is a wild odyssey of the highs and lows of trying to break into animation, the type of comedic and disarmingly earnest portrayal of youthful ambition in the face of opposition, and inexperience that reaffirms why you fell in love with anime in the first place. Brimming with meticulous nods to some of the medium’s finest creators and a mischievously meta sense of creativity that’ll have even the most stone-faced of viewers grinning ear to ear, it’s the kind of show you could only expect from the likes of Masaaki Yuasa and the team behind Science Saru. Top that with an infectiously trippy title theme and score courtesy of rap duo chelmico and experimental producer Oorutaichi and you’ve got one of the most memorable and hilarious anime of the year.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

First aired: 2007 | Episodes: 27Where to watch: Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll

No show better exemplifies the Japanese theme of fighting spirit better than Gainax’s exuberant, over-the-top mecha masterpiece Gurren Lagann. This is the same animation studio that made Evangelion in the ’90s, but the two couldn’t be more different in how they use giant robots. Gurren Lagann begins with humanity cowering in underground societies, scared of the surface above. It ends with giant robots in space throwing literal solar systems at one another.

Every step of the way it’s a story about the power of the human spirit, having the strength to never give up, and using that will plus a giant fucking drill to pierce the heavens. The rare show that can make your heart soar with excitement and make you cry within the same episode. Every time you think it can’t get more dramatic, more emotional, more over-the-top, it will exceed your expectations. The absolute pinnacle of unrestrained anime action.
