How To Draw Eyes

With eyelids depicted accurately, we can place an iris of the eye. Heres another amateur mistake you must avoid placing an iris as a full circle symmetrically between the upper and lower eyelids. Usually, the upper part of an iris is partially covered by the upper eyelid while it might be a small gap between the lower edge of the iris the lower eyelid.

You should also remember that the eyeball is not pure white and often has darker tonal values than highlights of the forehead, for example. Also, there is a casted shadow under the upper eyelid.

Many art students ask me how to draw eyelashes? The professional way is not to depict individual eyelashes unless it is an advert drawing for mascara. One dark curved line would do the job. This is especially important for male portraits.

Shading The Area Above The Upper Eyelids

The area below eyebrows has darker tones than upper eyelids. So, we could build up tonal values to block the area above the eyes.

Go light with rendering upper eyelids. We will come back to darken these tonal values to required depth later on. It is a good technique to build tones gradually. A proficient way of applying pencil strokes is along objects contours. Also, if you are drawing in graphite pencil, smudging pencil marks is a big no-no. I will explain why later.

Defining The Cheekbones Curve

The cheekbones curve defines another important contour of the face. It bends downward from one cheekbone to another, with its lowest point at the base of the nose.

This virtual line is the border between the frontal part of the cheekbones and the upper jaw section.

A portrait artist can simply keep this line in mind rather than actually draw it. Nevertheless, as a part of the head construction, this line helps to build the portrait geometrically correct and proportionate.

Section 21 Drawing Manga Eyes

There are probably hundreds of different styles you can use for eyes, but we will just go over some of the basics. For obvious reasons, male eyes differ greatly from female eyes, just as evil eyes look much different than good guy eyes. We could spend hours going over every single nuance, so for this tutorial, well keep it simple.

If youre interested this quora anwser is a reasonably comprehensive explanation of what different aspects of eyes could mean when drawing your Manga.

Lets start off with a basic female manga eye first. Start by drawing a curved line where the top of the eyelid and the eyelashes will sit. From here you will want to draw a large oval shape underneath, roughly the same width and the first line you made. Leave one side of the oval open .

Now you should have something that is starting to resemble an eye. If for whatever reason you arent happy with it thus far, just gently erase and start again. This is why you are pressing so lightly with the pencil. When the inking starts, theres no going back.

Inside this first oval, youll want to draw another smaller oval that is slightly overlapped on the top by the eyelashes. Then, draw yet another oval around pupil to represent the iris . If youre tired of drawing ovals, too bad There are more coming.

This next part is something very common among manga and anime .

Light reflections.

For the interested, these reflections are called catchlights in both film and photography.

How To Place The Ear Correctly

As the Drawing Academy tutor, I often receive for critique portrait drawings that have one common mistake a miss-located ear. To avoid such a junior mistake you need to know the following rules:

  • The top of an ear is on the same level as the line of eyebrows.
  • The bottom edge of an ear is on the same level as the base of the nose.
  • The distances from the edge of the eyebrows to the ear and to the middle of the face are equal . In perspective, these distances will be foreshortened. This is the same distance as between the hair-roots and the eyebrows line, the eyebrows and the base of the nose, and the base of the nose and the chin .
  • The line where an ear connects to the head is not vertical but tilted backward .

Anime Head Side View Guideline Construction Process

How To Draw A Manga / Anime Styled Portrait

Lets get straight into it! Please note that this is just how I create guidelines for my drawings. Different artists will have different ways in which they construct their guidelines, some can just Freehand everything!

First, as usual, draw a circle. Next, draw a vertical line down the left or right side of the circle, this is where the head will be facing. Now, decide where you want the bottom of the chin to be for your head. If youre drawing a more mature head, the chin will be longer if youre drawing a younger person, the chin should be shorter. in this example, Im drawing a young female, so the chin is pretty short.

Next, draw a horizontal line in the middle of the head (between the top of the head and the bottom of the chin. This line is where the top of the eye will be

Draw another horizontal line between the top of the eyes and bottom of the chin, this guideline is for the bottom of the nose.

Draw a horizontal line slightly into the face from the vertical line, this line should cut across the bottom line for the chin and the eyes. Add a slight inward curve around where the eye is. The intersection between the guideline for the bottom of the chin and the vertical line will be where the tip of the chin touches.

Where the top of the eyes is, draw a slight dip inwards the head.

From the bottom of the mouth to the chin, theres a slight inward curve.

Now you have a basic shape for the head! Time to start refining and adding in details.

Marking The Corners Of The Eyes

Depicting eyes with precision is a critical step in portrait drawing. It is not an easy task for beginners. I often receive portrait drawings for critique with eyes that are too close to each other or not symmetrical.

To pinpoint the exact location of eyes in a portrait drawing, you can use the following rules:

  • The distance between well-positioned eyes is equal to the length of one eye.
  • Both eyes must be on the same level, which is the horizontal line that divides the height of the head in half.
  • These rules are easy to use when you draw a full-face straight view portrait. In our case, it is a bit more complicated because the head is turned three-quarters and, therefore, is foreshortened in perspective. The eye-line is also slightly curved in this view.

We begin with marking model left eyes corners. Check the distance from the central line of the face to the eyes inner corner. Make sure, this corner is not too close to the nose in your drawing.

When this inner corner of the eye is pinpointed with necessary precision, you can also mark the wing of the nose, which is slightly closer to the central line of the face. I marked the distance between the eyes corner and the nose edge in red lines.

Check the length of the eye on the model and mark it in drawing.

Repeat this step for models right eye. In the three-quarter view, the nose can overlap the inner corner of another eye. Draw this eye complete as if the nose is transparent.

Use Fresco and Photoshop on the iPad to turn yourself into a manga character

To exercise my artistic muscles, I like to take a break from the norm and create art in different ways. I generally paint traditional or digital watercolors, but this time I created a manga-like character from a portrait using vector brushes. Since I like to draw in Fresco and I like to create and edit in Photoshop on the iPad, it seemed only natural to use both for my creation.

I decided to draw the character in Fresco because it is a drawing and painting app. Likewise, I thought it made sense to open my character in Photoshop on the iPad to create a background and then edit my character there. There are many different styles of anime and manga, from relatively realistic to highly stylized. I chose to make mine somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

Follow this step by step tutorial to create a character from a photograph of yourself and have fun creating using both Adobe Fresco and Photoshop on the iPad.

    • Next, tap on the photo icon in the toolbar
    • Navigate to the location your photo is stored and select it
    • Use your thumb and finger to make the image smaller or larger as desired
    • Tap Done in the top-right corner

How To Draw Anime And Manga Eyes

If theres something special in anime, its the eyes. You could argue that cartoon and western comic style also has and uses big eyes. However, the difference lies in that anime and manga eyes present the iris usually as an oval in shape, or the iris is enormous compared to the rest of the eye.

Anime eyes have a lot of personality in them and are the thing people search for first. First, its the head, then its the eyes. And especially the expression those eyes have.

One thing anime eyes do give you is a lot of creative freedom. You can draw eyes in various ways and still make them look believable.

So what defines, manga and anime eyes? They are large, shiny, the iris can be oval in shape. The eyes can be close to reality but either the eyelashes, eye-socket or other part is anime or manga like and thus creates this unreal looking eye but still so beautiful to watch. The eyes shape would break the human skull if it were real. Then again, manga and anime do not know reality in that sense.

So there are two types of eyes, one being continuous. Where the eyelids do connect. The other style being non-continuous, meaning that the eyelids are disconnected and thus break human eye anatomy completely. The continuous-style is trying to hold on the human anatomy, though only barely.

Size really matters with these styles and can be said that where continuous style is no longer looking aesthetically pleasing, it is time to make it non-continuous.
