Known as Tetsuwan Atom in Japan, the do-gooder little spiky-haired robot penned by manga godfather Osamu Tezuka has entertained the masses for years. Creating 23 volumes worth of futuristic stories between 1952 and 1968, Astro Boy the first big shonen hero that had the longevity of some of the modern Jump favorites.
Serialized in a whole slew of magazines by different publishers, as was common back in the day, Osamu Tezuka crafted stories there were more complex and challenging than much of comic were at the time. Sure these were comics kids could enjoy about a nice robot boy kicking the butts of bad robots, but Tezuka would regularly interject these comics with questions of morality and shades of grey, giving kids something to chew on.
Dr Tenma And Dr Ochanomizu In Astro Boy
I think its best to know about Dr. Tenma and Dr. Ochanomizu in Astro Boy. First off, the one who created Atom was Dr. Tenma. In fact, there are many Japanese people who are unaware of this fact. There are many cases where Atom appears in a commercial, and the one appearing with him is the large-nosed and kindhearted Dr. Ochanomizu. Therefore, it is widely misunderstood that Dr. Ochanomizu created Atom when it was, in fact, Dr. Tenma.
Atoms creator, Dr. Tenma, is a genius but he is also a mad scientist with an uneven temper and an oppressive side. Atom was created to replace his son, Tobio, after he died in an accident. Dr. Tenma was affectionate towards Atom for a while. However, he got angry at the fact that Atom did not grow and sold him to a circus. Even though he made Atom himself, he sent him away for not being able to grow like a human.
This is how Atom came to work in the circus. It was in that circus that Dr. Ochanomizu found Atom, took him in and raised him. Dr. Ochanomizu is Atomss stepdad, so to speak. Dr. Ochanomizu remodeled Atom, giving him his searchlight eyes and jet engines on his feet, among the 7 abilities given to Atom. The reason Atom is kindhearted is also in part to Dr. Ochanomizus personality.
Astro Boys charm is also the contrast between Dr. Tenma and Dr. Ochanomizu. Atom the Beginning focuses heavily on the difference between the two scientists.
Astro Boy Was Japans First Anime
Astro Boy is a manga series drawn by Osamu Tezuka. Osamu Tezuka, who died in 1989, was called the God of Manga in Japan. Astro Boy has a long history from 1952 until 1968, it was serialized in a shonen magazine. In 1963, there was a monochrome anime adaptation. The Astro Boy anime adaptation was Japans first anime series.
Nowadays, there are plenty of TV anime being broadcast, but during that time period in Japan, anime, as it is now, did not exist. One of the reasons Astro Boy is respected by so many people is because it was the first TV anime produced in Japan. It is not an exaggeration to say that if not for Astro Boy, current anime would not exist.

The Extremely High Budget 2003 Anime Adaptation
The first Astro Boy anime wasnt the only show in the franchise to break new ground. At least according to Sony Pictures who banked rolled the production, they were spending around three times the cost per episode than the average anime episode cost during that period making it the most expensive per episode anime production ever. Thankfully it shows in the end product even if the show wasnt a huge rating success across the world, with its US-based Kids WB run being considered a failure for example.
This series was absolutely gorgeous, with some segments rivaling full theatrical quality. Its joyous watching Astro buzz around defeating haywire robots and defending his metropolis from evil. Like the original manga, this series wasnt afraid to show some dark and pessimistic underbelly from time to time. You can thank Tezuka always giving his manga the proper shades, even when making kids material, and the shows head screenwriter Chiaki J. Konaka who wrote Serial Experiments Lain and Hellsing among others.

The Manga Contained Content That Was Racially Insensitive
Considering the time when Astro Boy debuted, it’s no wonder it contained certain humor that would not be acceptable today. This was commented on by the editors of the English-version of the manga, as they decided not to remove the content as they did not wish to censor anything.
They stated they were not sure of Osamu’s intent, so it would be inappropriate to change the message he wished to convey.
The Manga Has A Prequel Series That Also Received An Anime
It debuted long after both the original anime and manga, but there was a prequel released in 2014. It was named, Atom: The Beginning and would go on to gain an anime adaption to detail the origin story of what made Astro who he was today.
The manga was written by Tetsuro Kasahara, Makoto Tezuka, and Masami Yuki with illustrations by the Tetsuro. Although it received an anime adaption, it is still ongoing in Monthly Hero’s for a seinen audience instead of a shonen one.

The Series Is Known As Mighty Atom In Japan But As Astro Boy Worldwide
Astro Boy may be known worldwide as his signature name, but it turns out this was localized for overseas fans. It turns out the original name of the manga is Tetsuwan Atom, meaning Mighty Atom in Japanese.
He is still called this to this day in Japan, of course, but overseas fans may think of something different when they hear his localized name.
Astro Boy Made His Huge Return This Time In Color Back In 1980
Perhaps the least talked about of all the variousadaptations, the 1980s take on the franchise really was Astro Boy for a new era. Often entering darker territory than its 1963 sibling would, and yknow, not being in black and white, Tezuka productions had probably decided to resurrect Astro Boy into the public consciousness as the once-famous studio had been suffering from financial difficulties. We suppose they did an alright job this time around.
Apparently Astro Boy had still been a big enough name that networks all around the world ran the version of the story for years to come. It actually hit Australia just a couple years after coming out and would be rerun on their version of Nickelodeon until 2000 or so. American networks would start running the cartoon in the late 80s.

Some Astro Boy Games Over The Years Even Came Out Stateside
Being a tentpole franchise with a mascot character literally every single person in Japan knows, its a safe bet to assume that there have been quite a few Astro Boy video games made over the years. Some of these games have even come out in The United States, usually tying into a currently airing TV series.
One of the best would be the Gameboy Advance Astro Boy: Omega Factor, a charismatic beat em up developed by Treasure at SEGA which was based around the 2003 iteration of the show. Astro Boy: The Video Game which tied into the Hollywood movie came out in 2009 but exclusively on hardware that was already a generation behind, like the Playstation 2 and the Nintendo DS. 1 or 2 other games have seen English localization but definitely Omega Factor is your best bet.

Stamps were issued in Tezuka’s honor in 1997. Also, beginning in 2003, the Japanese toy company began manufacturing a series of figurines of Tezuka’s creations, including Princess Knight, Unico, the Phoenix, Dororo, Marvelous Melmo, Ambassador Magma, and many others. To date, three series of the figurines have been released.
Tezuka’s legacy has continued to be honored among manga artists and animators. He guided many well-known manga artists, such as and . Artists that have cited Tezuka as an influence include , , and . From 2003 to 2009, Urasawa and adapted an arc of into the murder mystery series .
Tezuka was a personal friend of Brazilian comic book artist . Atom The Beginning Is The Prequel To Astro Boy
Atom the Beginning is an original story based on Astro Boy. It is a prequel centered on the question What were Dr. Umatarou Tenma and Dr. Ochanomizu like before the creation of Atom?
The main characters of Atom the Beginning are two young robot scientists, Umatarou Tenma and Hiroshi Ochanomizu. Tenma thinks of robots as something that have surpassed humans and are more like gods. On the contrary, Ochanomizu thinks of them as humans partners or friends. It is a youthful story about the development of the robot A106 by the two scientists. A106 is read as A Ten Six.
In Japanese, 10 can be read as toh and 6 as mu, so the reading atomu is also possible. One is able to predict that there may be a conflict between Tenma and Ochanomizu due to their opposing views. It is a story you can enjoy even if you dont know the story of Astro Boy. However, knowing the story beforehand will allow you to enjoy the story more.

Logo And Identity History
The Nine Network logo, which consists of a numeral “9” beside nine dots arranged in a 3×3 grid, is one of the most recognisable logos in Australia.
In 1997, the dots were changed to spheres. The spheres returned to dots as a new on-air identity package was created by Velvet mediendesign in 2001.
This logo was redesigned by Velvet Mediendesign on 1 January 2001, with the introduction of digital TV in Australia and new graphics.
On 1 September 2002, the dots were changed back to spheres from the 1997 logo as well as the numeral becoming 3D for their “7 colours for 7 days” presentation package.
On 30 January 2006, the network and its affiliates relaunched their logos to coincide with Nine’s 50th anniversary.
A numeral nine was reworked with a few rounded corners eliminated in process. This logo would use a blue square featuring the numeral altered, which saw the removal of the nine dots again. The graphics package used during that time was designed by Bruce Dunlop Associates.
Later on 15 January 2007 the blue square became solid, and in May they partially relaunched the nine dots, which are visible on every second surface of the box. This logo continued to be used in Perth and Adelaide stations until March 2010, when they reinstated the nine-dots logo.
This logo would first be used in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Darwin markets but the logo would not be used in both Perth and Adelaide markets, until March 2010, due to being owned by WIN Corporation at the same time.

The Astro Boy manga sold over one-hundred-million copies of its twenty-three tankobon volumes, skyrocketing it to be the tenth-best-selling manga series of all time. There was no doubt the manga series had an influence on fans and manga authors alike with how much it sold during its shelf time.
Although it was recently beaten by Bleach, the fact that Astro Boy still remains at the eleventh-place is amazing compared to other manga with double-digits in their volumes.
