The Opposite Can Also Be True

How to Make Anime EXPLAINED

Of course, as with all the advice in this article, there are reasons to do the exact opposite. Mimicking perspective leads to a more energetic, visceral experience, which tends to make a fight more compelling, but perhaps you want the opposite. A detached, distanced perspective saps the energy and involvement from a fight, but if youre trying to horrify the reader rather than energize or entertain, this is a valid technique.

For instance, a cool fight would benefit from a close perspective, whereas an upsetting beating would likely benefit from distance. In this way, there are few bad writing techniques just different effects that either work with or against your intent for a scene. Keep in mind that your actual first step to improving your fight scene is understanding how you want your reader to feel about it.

Rule #: Fight Scenes Should Move The Story Forward

The very first rule for fight writing is to ensure that it moves the story forward. Say no to gratuitous fight scenes that only show off fancy moves or writing skills.

Heres the easiest way to find out if your fight scene moves the story: Delete it. Now, read the scene before and the scene after. Can you still make sense of what happened?

If the fight caused some type of transition in your story, keep it in.

And remember: Not all transitions are physical. Some are mental. You dont always have to discuss the physical aftermath. You can also explore the mental fallout after a fight. This can be how the fight moves the story forward.

Determine The Length Of Your Manga

Plan out how much of your story will happen in each chapter.

Write point form notes of the major events in a given chapter and the characters that will participate in them.

Example of point form notes:

  • Protagonist wakes up and makes breakfast
  • Protagonist stops by best friends house & they walk to school together
  • On way to school protagonist and best friend talk about
  • At start of class a new transfer student is introduced
  • etc

Of course you will want to use the actual names of your characters in the notes.

Clearly label each set of point form notes like Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc… If you are going to name your chapters include the name after the number . You want to stay well organized.

Write & Create Content

There are many aspects of anime. If you are only starting out as a blogger it may be good to focus on one thing in particular. Reviews, gameplay videos, art, etc Having a clear focus or your own niche can really help your site take off.

If you have any sort of anime industry connections, access to exclusive content, artistic skills to create your own content these can be a huge help.

Some good potential content can be something like an interview with an author of a manga, an interview with someone who worked on anime themed game or some original anime themed art.

Not everyone can get an interview with someone from a major game development company or travel to Japan but you can look for other people that are also starting out such as indie game developers that are far more likely to give you some of their time in exchange for promotion of their work.

Creating content for your blog/website will also require good writing skills. Depending on what skills you have it may be a good idea to collaborate with other people with similar interests but a different skill set.

Additional Help When Printing Manga

You can do additional research on printing on your own but the above printing tips are all things to be aware of.

If you feel yo need more help in this area a good person to consult with can be a graphic designer. They often deal with print and should be easier to find than an actual manga or comic book artist.

Rule #: Fight Scenes Shouldn’t Slow The Pace

In movies and especially in real life, fights go by quickly. But in literature, fight scenes can slow the pace. Thats because you have to write all of the details and the reader has to reconstruct the scene in their minds.

This is the reason why many people simply skip over fight scenes in novels. Im guilty of it. How about you? There are only so many kicks and punches you can read before yawning.

However, if you employ certain literary devices into your narrative, you can actually create a taut fight scene. Here are some tips:

  • Write in shorter sentences. Shorter sentences are easier to digest. It also speeds up the pace of a story.
  • Mix action with dialogue. Dont just write long descriptions of whats happening. Also, share the verbal exchange between your characters.
  • Dont focus too much on whats going on inside the characters mind. Introspection happens before and after a fight, not during.
  • Keep the fight short. Fights should never go on for pages .

Suggested Themes And Aesops

To quote Shonen Jump: Hard work, friendship, victory! A shonen hero is someone who never, ever gives up. The deceitful and treacherous might appear to have the upper hand at first, but their downfall is as certain as the rising sun… unless they too learn the error of their ways and embrace shonen ways themselves.

It’s a common trick to give the hero some special power or talent that makes them unique, but heaven help the writer who leans too much on that device. Nobody will respect a hero who doesn’t sweat blood to earntheir victory.

Plan For Printing Before You Draw The Actual Manga

How Anime is Made – Inside the Studio (Toei, Madhouse, Pierrot)

Before you start drawing the actual manga there are a few things you should be aware of.

If you actually plan on getting your manga professionally printed you should do some research on the standard print sizes for such material. If you are just drawing your manga for practice and will print it at home you can do whatever your home printer can handle. With that said it might still be better to try and do one in a size standardized for the industry even if its just for practice.

It is important to also be aware that the standard sizes for a manga in a country like Japan may be different to what is standard for a comic book in other countries. Be careful to actually get the size that is available for you to print in.

If you want your manga printed you should also be aware of the live area, bleed and trim.

How To Write Anime Reviews People Actually Want To Read

Its been said that opinions arent special, because everybody has one. Actually, the phrase I hear the most is more vulgar than that one, but Ill leave it to your imagination.

But in reality, Id argue that some opinions are more special than others. Im talking about the opinions of reviewers and critics. When a new anime comes out, we enlist perfect strangers to help us choose whether to watch it or not, like the writers at the Fandom Post, Gar Gar Stegosaurus, and Anime News Network.

What makes these reviewers opinions so engaging? In one way or another, theyve all mastered critical writing. Critical writing done right enhances your position with context and evidence that convinces readers your opinion matters.

Here are a few suggestions for writing anime reviews that people will want to read:

Include a brief summary

Youre adding something new, not reiterating the show. The portion of the review in which you summarize it for context should take up no more than a quarter of your article. If readers want a written recap of the show, theyll read the novelization.

You know youve put the right amount of summary in when it describes the genre, overall plot, and a few major characters and their motivations.

No spoilers!

If you absolutely must have spoilers, mark your review accordingly! The only excuse I can think of for including spoilers would be a main character death in the first episode, but even then I would try to write around it.

How To Make A Good Anime Plot

Mechademia, an annual collection of scholarly essays on Anime, publishes articles that contain “imagined history,” and “gothic politics” in their titles. The titles of these essays suggest a complex plot structure that uses satire and fantasy to make a larger point. But at the basis of plot-driven Anime is fundamental storytelling. According to Kathleen Dinneen and Maryanne O’Connor of the Yale-New Haven Teacher’s Institute, a story begins with character development.

Write a summary of each character. The summary will include a brief background and the current objectives of the character. The summary will include aspects of the character’s personality which will later determine the character’s decisions within the story. For example: A character who is a strong fighter but often acts before thinking may make decisions that change the direction of a story. Drawing rough sketches of the characters as you work will help guide their development.

Create a conflict. Your characters must have a conflict to overcome to keep the audience’s attention. Refer to the work of Tezuka Osamu, one of the founders of Anime.Tezuka’s stories Triton of the Sea and Phoenix 2772 use conflicts inspired by traditional fables and fantasy to tell epic new stories. Conflict such as war or unruly spirits will give your plot the foundation of a story from which the characters will be forced to make decisions.

Can I Write An Anime Script Without Drawing

How to Write an Anime Script: 8 Steps (with Pictures ...

Yes, you can.

Should you? no

Its bad enough that youre a foreigner looking to break into a prominently Japanese practice. Now you cant draw. And please tell me you speak Japanese?

Like I expressed earlier, the manga is the blueprint of which the anime is based. Coming without that ability to draw makes it that much harder.

Even with that, 93% of all manga doesnt have a typewritten script. Maybe a few writers who work with artists but thats about it. Most of it comes from one person who draws and writes.

Its probably better to hire a manga artist. Yes, its going to cost thousands, but at least you will have a manga to go with your script.

Usually, first comes the manga. And if its good enough, its published in a Japanese magazine. After that, animation studios will call you up.

The publisher represents social proof that your story is popular enough for animation.

But there is hope.

Have you heard of ?

She is a anime writer with no background in Art.

So it is possible to do, but you have to take into account her history with the medium before she got in this unique position.

But what if I can kinda draw?

Theres more hope.

Youre probably familiar with One the creator of One Punch Man.

His drawings are not the best quality.

But his idea fit his style.

But the essential part of his story is he got a massive following. Over 100,000 hits day on his webcomic.

From there he was published in the Weekly Shonen Sunday.

Build it and they will come.

Get The Balance Right

Writing the perfect anime theme is as delicate an art form as animating the show itself. As Johnny has learned, its about striking a balance between setting up the narrative, but not spoiling the show . Its about evoking the feeling that is inherent within the anime.

The music supports the listener, and multiplies the emotion and feelings towards the story by expressing and describing the story from another aspect, says Johnny. Explaining too much isnt what I expect from the theme. It needs to be something like a hint, and nothing too direct. Too much spoils the story. I dont like songs that explain too much about the anime. Of course, describing the world and whats going on in the narrative is good to help the listeners to understand, but explaining too much just spoils the beauty. The song must be an element of the anime which makes it cooler, not something that shows off too much.

Attack on Titans first opening is epic as hell on a sugar rush riding a Rapidash that can run on water while drinking a nice cup of tea Fairy Tails opening, Strike Back, from the last part of the grand magic games arc is my overall anime opening though. I grew up in the pop punk era of the early 2000s so it just speaks to me on every level.Spider crash

Sensory Information Is Relatable

Another reason description doesnt work in fight scenes is that immediate, physical situations arent characterized by a heightened degree of analytical thought. In contrast, physical situations do tend to come with a lot of sensory information. The taste of blood, the ringing in their ears, the ache of their injuries.

Evan Hunter wrote fantastically brutal fight scenes by stating a simple, physical act and then following it up with evocative sensory information:

He pulled him to his feet, almost tearing the collar He heard the slight rasp of material ripping.

That description, from his short story collection Barking at Butterflies, adds more physicality to the encounter than any physical description could.

Sensory information is also more relatable to readers. Not everyone has been held up by the collar, but everyone has heard fabric tear and tasted their own blood. You can summon incredibly detailed information through these minor descriptions: the pull needed to tear a collar is something most people can appreciate, so they understand the violence of the grip without ever consciously considering it.

Why The Passive Voice Wont Work

A Beginners Guide to Making Anime

A similar technique to avoid is the use of passive voice. This is where the person or object performing an action is absent from the sentence in which it happens, as in he was kicked in the face, where the person doing the kicking isnt mentioned.

This is a technique youll see in a lot of news coverage, since it deliberately saps energy from an otherwise startling event. In a story, however, its the most roundabout way to communicate an action, and its best avoided. Even when the attacker is unseen , Mcdonald goes for A foot came up from the pavement and kicked him in the face as opposed to he was kicked in the face.

Try to err on the side of person, action, effect, since this most closely recreates the experience of watchingthings in real time. Agency a persons ability to effect the world aroundthem is a huge part of compelling fight scenes, and the passive voice is allabout ignoring agency.
