We compiled some of the best anime series and movies across 24 categories and included a handful of honorable mentions for each. The best anime in each category rises above its genre in one way or another. Each anime series inspires radical changes within its genre or stands out due to a fantastic story or characters, great animation, voice work, and other factors.
Heavy on plot and character development.
Real stakes for the characters.
The protagonist is arguably the least interesting character.
Not everyone will enjoy its overly bleak tone.
Rated: TV-MAHonorable mentions: Trigun, Black Lagoon, Berserk
Attack on Titan is horrifying, but it isn’t really a horror anime. If you can stomach the grotesque, inside-out appearance of the titular titans, and the brutal finality of the way they devour their victims, you’ll find an action anime that’s also heavy on plot, character development, and atmosphere.
While there are probably more great action anime shows than any other genre, Attack on Titan is the best because the virtual lack of plot armor means nobody is ever truly safe, and the stakes are always very real.
A mix of charm and action.
Wonderful Akira Toriyama artwork.
Rated: TV-14 , TV-PG Honorable mentions: One PunchMan, Bleach, Naruto
Each season is something new.
High-fashion character designs.
Some people might be turned off by the tonal whiplash.
The first season is slow to start.
Some potential filler.
Q: Who Created Anime And When
The art form we now call anime doesnt have a specific birth date, and it wasnt exactly created by anyone. But, partly as a result of being either the first or among the first to use the big-eyed style, Tezuka Osamu is generally considered the father of anime. He started creating manga in 1947, which were extremely popular, and at the beginning of 1963, Tetsuwan Atomy began airing. That is generally considered the first anime-style animated production. Animation had been produced in Japan as early as 1917, but the style was generally different from what is now considered anime.

Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure
This action-packed series is a unique one. It follows the life and struggles of the Joestar bloodline as each descendant faces the forces of evil. Beginning in 1880 with Jonathan Joestar, each season takes you on a psychic-powered journey, or a bizarre adventure, if you will. Though it begins to follow a fairly common magical power hierarchy youd expect to see in a series like this, surprising twists and turns make it a delightfully refreshing watch.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba Season 2
The highly anticipated second season of the acclaimed Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba series took an unconventional approach this year. Instead of airing a full season of new footage, Ufotable split the season into two parts: the Mugen Train arc, which re-edits the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train movie into a seven-episode storyline with additional content, and the Entertainment District arc, a brand-new arc that takes places immediately following the events of Mugen Train. The Mugen Train movie itself was impressive, so its no surprise to see how well it plays out across the episodic television arc. While it may be a tad soon to endorse the Entertainment District arc, season two of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba so far has established itself as a worthy follow-up to the 2019 smash-hit. TE

Q: Why Is There So Much Nudity Even In Kids Shows
First of all, Japanese attitudes about nudity are far less strict than those in the US, and it is even legal to show some nudity on TV in Japan. Since attitudes toward nudity are less strict in Japan, its also not entirely uncommon to see nudity in anime, including shows targeted at children, though the context is rarely erotic in those situations. There is also, of course, a significant market for anime specifically targeted at young-adult males, which feature everything from a great deal of skin to outright you-know-what. Dont take the existence of this sort of anime to mean that everything with some adult themes is low-brow, because youd be missing some very impressive cinema.

Kokkoku: Moment By Moment
Kokkoku: Moment by Moment is a bleak, surreal mystery that plays with time and space in a way that feels fresh and exciting. Juri Yukawa is your typical underachieving teenager whos failed to find her calling. Kokkoku quickly pulls the rug out from under the viewer and transforms this slice of life anime into something substantially trippier. Juris brother and nephew get kidnapped by a cult and Juris uncle reveals that their family has the power to stop time, which is exactly what theyre going to do to save them.
Its fascinating to watch Juri learn more of the secrets about her lineage as well as her own unique powers. When Juri and her grandfather freeze time, this frozen world is called Stasis, but there are also terrible monsters that lurk in Stasis that prey on those who stay in there for too long. Kokkokucreates such a rich, fully formed story with a deep history to it, but it also initially keeps the audience in the dark to simulate the same overwhelming experience that Juri is going through. Kokkoku slowly parses out answers as Juri and her grandfather become more entwined in the world of Stasis. Its such an engrossing story thats so much bigger than the characters and what theyre caught up in.
