GR Anime Review: Erased

Magic mayhem, witchery, an evil cutesy creaturewhat started up as an innocent magical girl anime progresses into something sinister!

Protagonists Yoshino and Mahiro must save the world and find the murderer of Mahiro’s younger sister.

Erased Is One Of The Best Live Action Manga Adaptations

Anime and manga can be very difficult to translate into live-action, but Netflix’s Erased is one of the best adaptations ever.

The popular 2016 Japanese anime series, Erased based on the manga by Kei Sanbe, was adapted into a live-action series just one year later in 2017. Anime can be very difficult to translate into live-action due to the inherent differences between the two mediums, but Erased is one of the best live-action manga/anime adaptations ever.

Some live-action anime/manga and cartoon adaptations are faithful, like Alita: Battle Angel, while others stray so far away from the source material that they become unrecognizable to the source material, like The Last Airbender. While there can be no justification for M. Night Shyamalans crimes against the Avatar, it is fair to say that, in a general sense, choosing which elements to keep and which to omit when adapting anime or cartoons to live-action is never easy. Faithfulness to the source material is always important, but some aspects of an anime simply do not translate to a live-action context. Erased works hard to strike that balance of adhering to the spirit of the anime without making the live actors appear awkwardly cartoony.

    Erased: Anime Review On Netflix

The same friend that recommended The Promised Neverland to me, also recommended Erased to me. Lets just say he has some pretty good eyes for good animes. This was another short 12 episode anime that I watched in one day. It had a really cool concept and was more story-based than it was action-based. I will say that the creators took a different approach than I would have but it was still a great anime.

This anime begins with our main character Satoru, a 29-year-old in a dead end job and seemingly depressed. However, he has a unique ability, one that he calls revival, and it lets him go back in time a couple of minutes to reverse a bad outcome. One day, he has one of these revivals with his mother and they stop what seems like a child abduction, and the mother recognizes the suspect in the attempt. When she goes to try to do some further investigating she gets killed by the suspect. The attempted child abduction was similar to ones Satoru heard about at his school when he was a kid, including a kid named Kayo. Framed with his mothers murder, Satoru panics and runs away from the police, desperate to rewrite history, he somehow forces a revivalto when he was a kid?! Now, he tries to save Kayo and rewrite history as he knows it today.

My Hero Academia: Season 1 Anime Review

    The Ancient Magus’ Bride

This animated series takes place in a magical version of modern England, where Celtic and Scandanavian monsters and fairies live unseen in the wilds, far beyond human civilization. It’s almost like a fairy tale out there.

Viewers can easily relate to the familiar critters of this series, from a church grim to dragons and the famed Titania and Oberon. That and the fascinating skull-headed Elias can make for a compelling watch, all in 24 episodes.

    • Families can talk about Erased‘s setup. Characters who have supernatural powers are common on TV shows and in movies. Why? Why are viewers attracted to this type of narrative? What is the appeal of extraordinary powers for ordinary people?

    • This show was originally a manga, then a Japanese animated TV series, then a live-action movie. Have you seen any of the other adaptations of this story, or read the original manga? Do you think that would deepen or lessen your appreciation for this version?

    • Female characters often don’t fare well in superhero tales — they are killed, raped, attacked, or otherwise harmed, which gives male heroes a reason to fight with villains. Are the female characters in Erased given more depth? How many female characters are there compared to male characters? Are their roles as central?

    Is Erased A Good Anime

In a pinch, Erased is a 12 episode anime that falls inches short of perfection. So yes, it is more than just a good anime to watch. In fact I would go as far to say that this anime is a must watch. As anime is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, Erased is definitely one that should be drawing more attention. It is not underrated by any means, and this anime falls into a much more prestigious category than your typical seasonal anime.

Erased is about a 29 year old aspiring mangakaSatoruand his abilities known as Revival. This ability allows for Satoru to have a premonition that something bad is going to happen around him, and it is his duty to find out what it is before it happens. His unique ability usually sends him back a few minutes in time to asses his surroundings, and fix whatever could be wrong.

Now that I have explained the basics, allow me to delve deeper into why this series should be considered one of the best.

The easiest place to start off is the opening episode. It is not uncommon to kick things off with an over-the-top episode that doesnt reflect the true intentions of certain characters. It is also very common to see an anime that doesnt quite have legs underneath its plot until episode five or six. However this is not the case for Erased.

Fullmetal Alchemist And Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Not quite as cerebral or surreal as other shows in this list, FMA is a tightly wound high-fantasy series that has garnered several generations of fans. A bit of explanation: Full Metal Alchemist takes a turn halfway through that changes the story vastly from the series source material, while Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a more strictly adhered-to adaptation of the original books. Most FMA acolytes think the latter is far superior, but both are excellent. Telling the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric, brothers who survived a traumatic magical accident now hoping to right their mistakes of the past the show explores themes of filial piety and the ramifications of global war.

    Is It Any Good

Dark and intriguing, this tale of an ordinary young man with out-of-the-ordinary powers is meaty, suspenseful, and fascinating, if too grim for young viewers. Satoru, all staring eyes and blank expressions, is a difficult hero to get close to, particularly at first. He barely speaks to his fellow humans even ebullient coworker Airi Katagiri has trouble getting more than a few words out of him. But we already know his secret: As he tells us in the first moments of the series, Satoru is “scared to find out I have nothing to offer the world.” In his dreams, he’s a great manga artist who touches emotions with his work in reality, he’s a pizza delivery guy who lives alone in a dank apartment on a dead-end Tokyo street.

    Story Set In Hokkaido

    ERASED

Satoru, the protagonist, lives in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, when the story starts. However, once he is brought back to 1988, the setting changes to the place he spent his childhood, Hokkaido. Hokkaido is the largest and northernmost prefecture in Japan. Just take a look at a map of Japan, and youll see one big island on top at the north end. That large island is Hokkaido. Its winter is very cold with a lot of snow and it celebrates a major snow festival every year. Hokkaido always reminds you of snow, and the series effectively uses a lot of snow scenes for cinematography. The location of Hokkaido as its setting made it possible to use interesting elements as important factors to add to the story, from footprints in the snow to vivid depiction of characters freezing.

It also introduces the local Hokkaido dialect. People say Shitakke!, a casual greeting used there meaning Bye! and See you!, and you can hear Satoru and his classmates using it. Surprisingly, many Japanese people are often not aware that Hokkaido has some local dialects. Hearing this different greeting they use reminds us that the story is indeed set in Hokkaido.

The Best Anime On Netflix To Watch Right Now

Japanese animation has become a major influence on Western cartoons, contemporary cinema, and even fashion design. Despite its reputation as lowbrow and nerdy, anime remains one of the most boundary-pushing genres in contemporary visual arts. However, it can be hard to get into it if you choose the wrong series from the get-go. The good news is Netflix has some of the best anime series of all time streaming on its service. The bad news is the streaming service also has a lot of really bad TV shows to sort through.

Luckily, weve done the hard work of sorting through the platform and finding the hidden gems youll want to watch. From beloved classics to next-wave Netflix anime brilliance, here weve gathered the best anime on Netflix for August 2021.

Erased And The Charms Of Time

Mentioning even a bit of the story could be a huge spoiler, so I tried my best to introduce the series without talking about the plot itself. Its best to watch it without knowing much in order to enjoy the series. You can enjoy this mystery thriller better by guessing whats happening next or who the perpetrator is. And then, when you have seen it once and fell in love with it, I hope you too enjoy reviving this series like I do.

    Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

In a similar vein to Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is one of the most iconic and influential anime of the past few decades. The series follows two brothers, Edward and Alphonse as they try to heal the damage inflicted on them both during an ill-fated ritual.

The series has some of the most intense action, compelling characters, and heartbreaking episodes in anime history, making it a perfect contender for someone’s ‘first anime’.

    Erased The Anime Review

    Erased – Anime Review

After watching anime shows such as Death Note, Attack On Titan and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, I didnt think thered be another anime series out there that could captivate me and leave me hanging on the edge of my seat the same way that these anime shows did. That is, until I began watching, Erased.

Erased is a thriller based on the manga of the same name and follows the main protagonist, Satoru Fujinuma, who possesses the unique ability to travel back in time moments before a serious, life-threatening incident occurs, enabling him to prevent the incident from occurring. This ability and its effects play out almost like a butterfly effect and brings into focus a crucial moment which took place in Satorus life eighteen years ago.

The plot and narrative is astounding and especially gripping. Each episode left me wanting to learn more about Satoru, his predicament and about the overall story. Much like Death Note, theres an alluring aspect of mystery that certainly caught my attention, along with brilliant film techniques and motifs used throughout the series that adds a certain feeling of anxiety and anticipation, leaving you wanting more and more.
