What Is The Difference Between Canonical And Official

Anime Talk: What is Canon?

Fans of the artwork can consider an authors work as canon, but not the authors statements, as these are opinions. Fans could also differ in the things they consider canon.

Some fans may consider unofficial materials as canonical. Note that officially recognized materials by the author and the fans are always regarded as canonical. Yet, fans generally view unofficial materials as non-canonical.

What Does Canon Mean In Anime

Fans and creators use the term canon when they officially recognize events happening in the story. The original story created by the author is typically referred to as the canon of the story.

If the story changes, the story is referred to as non-canon. However, fans can consider the revised story as having its canon. Many revised manga stories stick to the original characters and settings. They are still considered canon due to the storys continuity.

The content of the anime and the manga that inspired it may develop simultaneously. Yet, the format that came first is typically considered the canon or the official sequence of the story. So, the adaptation of the original story is non-canon, and the original story is canon.

Is Gt A Canon

The Dragon Ball franchise has no shortage of out-of-continuity stories with the majority of its spinoff animated films in direction contradiction to the series and seen as non-canon side stories by Toriyama.

GT is not canon, it never was.

Toriyama was not that involved and is not part of the manga itself..

What Does Canon Mean In Star Wars

In Star Wars, the canon is the fictional universe of this movie that pertains to the original series from 1 to 6. Star Wars Expanded Universe is closely tracked by Lucasfilm so that the continuity and canon of the story remain and there are no contradictions.

When Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise, Lucasfilm declared the EU released before the acquisition as non-canonical legends. This label did not include the first six films, the TV series, and The Clone Wars 2008 film.

The Original Six Films Were:

  • Star Wars: A New Hope
  • Star Wars: The Empire
  • The Return of the Jedi- Star Wars
  • Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
  • Attack of the Clones- Star Wars
  • Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

Material released after the Disney acquisition has a separate timeline from the original films, yet the Lucasfilm story group still supervises all the story developments.

The Star Wars creators categorize the movies/stories into two timelines, Canons and Legends. This happened because Disney did not use all the materials of the original Expanded Universe.

So, creators labeled the stories Canons after the Lucasfilm acquisition and the stories before the acquisition as Legends .

Star Wars Canon Are as Follows:

  • All comics and books released after 2014
  • Films from Episodes I-IX, Rogue One, Solo
  • Star Wars video games
  • TV shows: Rebels, The Clone Wars, The Mandalorian, Resistance

Anime Arcs You Never Knew Were Actually Non

Filler can either add more depth to the show or completely miss the mark and make fans want to skip all filler.

One thing about anime that fans can either love or hate is filler. Filler is what happens when the anime catches up with the manga. So in order to avoid a hiatus or the possibility of being canceled an anime series will create filler so the manga can have more time to produce more content.

The creation of filler also leads to the concept of non-canon in anime. Non-canon is content that is anime exclusive, meaning that the content isn’t in the original manga making it non-canon. Filler can either add more depth to the show or completely miss the mark and make fans want to skip all filler.

Sailor Moon: Makai Tree Arc Adds Depth To The Show

Season 2 of the original Sailor Moon also known as the Makai Tree Arc is surprisingly non-canon. In this season, Usagi Tsukino’s memory has been wiped, and she’s now back to living her normal life. However, there has been an emergence of a Maki tree and two aliens know as Ali and An. In order to get rid of these new aliens, Luna has no other choice but to reawaken Usagi’s memories.

Many fans consider this arc to be canon since it adds so much depth into the show, for instance, things like Usagi’s new transformation, how they got their memories back, and the moon rod.

In literature, the word canon refers to the writers original works who created specific characters and settings for a particular narrative or story. Fandoms could consider the works of other writers using the same setting and characters as canon too.

What Would Be Considered Canon In The Pokemon Franchise

Usually we would treat the manga as canon for most works, but as most people usually only have watched the animation or played the video games, would in this case the manga still be considered canon over the anime? Or would it be the videogame and manga based on it?

Canon usually refers to the original work rather than the most popular one. As such, I would imagine that the original Japanese manga is canon.

The other mediums can be canon as well the anime for example is a very important part of the franchise. Stil, the manga would probably still take precedence.

Canon is a very broad term that can be as strict or lenient as the user who uses it, so it’s hard to answer this question definitively.

How Did The Canon Company Get Its Name

The companys name Canon originated from Kannon, a Buddhist term. Later, it became Kwanon or Kuanyin. The company then produced Kwanon, the first-ever Japanese prototype camera.

Since then, the company converted Kwanon to English as Canon. The companys name changed from Precision Optical Industry Co. Ltd. in 1937 to Canon Camera Co., Inc. in 1947. The company shortened the name to Canon Inc. in 1969.

Canon was a trailblazer in the camera business. The company manufactured SLR cameras, photocopiers, still cameras, single-lens SLR, and the first movie camera with zoom lenses.

What Constitutes As Canon In Dragon Ball

What Does a Canon Broly Mean for Dragon Ball? – One Shot

Much like comic book universes and other anime series, the Dragon Ball franchise has a number of stories that are usually considered outside of continuity. With the likes of Super Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball GT thought of as side stories that don’t affect the main series currently running in both the anime and the manga, fans are sometimes left wondering just what can be considered “canon” and what stories take place outside of the realm of the “official story”. Follow us won’t you, as look into the past of the Dragon Ball franchise and determine just which stories took place and which hadn’t!

The first major hurdle for continuity is the 13 Dragon Ball Z movies that ran during the second installment of the Akira Toriyama franchise. Introducing such characters as Turles, Lord Slug, Broly, Janenba, and Bojack to name a few, one of the main reasons as to why a lot of these movies simply can’t work is that there is no time for many of them to have taken place. For example, in Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, both Goku and Vegeta are in the afterlife, battling the evil demon known as Janemba and giving fans a look at the “birth of Gogeta”.

Soul Eater: The Ending Arc Was A Dissapointment

The ending of Soul Eater is non-canon and completely different from the manga. Many fans can’t help but feel disappointed with how the anime ended things. The final battle between the Maka and the Kishin showcases Maka being half weapon– which is something never mentioned in anime at all.

And fans never get to see if Soul was ever able to become a Death Scythe- something the anime focused heavily on in the beginning. Overall, the ending of the anime cut out and changed so many things from the manga.

    Are Bleach Fillers Canon

These episodes are classified into Manga Canon, Mixed Canon-Filler, Filler, Anime Canon, and Omake Episodes. As you probably know, this show is based on the original manga written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. Because the manga is the original material, fans consider content derived from the comic to be canon.

Noragami: Rabo Arc Only Lasts Two Episodes

Although the Rabo arc in Noragami only lasts two episodes it is still non-canon. In these two episodes, a God that used to work with Yato appears and tries to convince him to go back to his old ways as a Calamity God.

Rabo’s sudden appearance is the true test to see if Yato has really changed for the better and at the end of the season, we see an epic battle between the two. Fans speculate that the reason this was added into the series was that there was a lack of battle in the anime and the studio wanted it to end with an epic one.

    What Does Mixed Canon/filler Mean

What Does Non Canon Mean In Anime

I was looking up a filler episode guide and I saw where it says some episodes are mixed canon/filler.

Does that simply mean that some scenes in the episode are canon and some are filler? Or something else?

I think what you said might be correct or in MHA for example, some episodes for the side character in Class 1-A are canon events that have a few panels in the manga but get expanded upon in the anime. So technically they are filler but still canon.

It is as you said. Mixed canon/filler is used to describe the audience’s reaction to that filler. Canon meaning acceptance, and Filler meaning low-quality or used to take away from the material at ease to allow the use of chapters that never got its airing or is man-made within the production. By doing this, if you add in “mix”, you get both of these. Mixed canon and filler is build within the audience’s acceptance towards a new character, pacing, and or the narrative that will take place at hand. this rarely happens though. 🙂

    How Do You Establish Canonicity

Creators must know how to assign different levels of canonicity to their multiple works. This method will prevent confusion among the creators fandom or readers.

Before Disney has purchased the franchise to Star Wars, Lucasfilm categorized the canonicity of each work. This method ensured that there was continuity and unity with newer pieces. They have solved the problem using two timelines and labeled the materials Canons or Legends.

The process will guarantee that fans can refer to the old narrative any time they want to. Star Wars creators solved this issue in their unique way. Please refer to the Star Wars explanation as mentioned above for more information.

    Why Was Broly Not Canon

Because Brolys story cannot fit into the 10 days before the Cell games. The manga never considered anything canon. Whoever has the rights to the show is what considers something to be canon. If funimation were to come out with a new character named Dickman Z ssj5, and said it was canon, itd be 100% canon.

What Is Canon In The Context Of Fandom

Canon are sources accepted and considered genuine by fandoms. The material could be a novel, film, TV show, concert tour, or comic book. Canons may be different even within the fandom as individuals may vary in their preferences.

Canon could extend to props, as prop canons and characterizations. The plots or stories should not only be consistent but also the traits of the characters.

Examples of prop canons are birth certificates they should show the exact dates of birth in episodes where they appear.

Characters in the story should also stay true to their form. An example is that Harry Potter cannot act as Voldemort and vice versa. They have their own canon characters to portray.

Unless the author creates a plot explaining the change, the characters traits must also be canonical for the specific characters in their Expanded Universe.
