AREA IDS

In 2018, The Society for Promotion of Japanese Animation took on a new brand identity to better express its story and messaging, especially at its annual convention in Los Angeles, Anime Expo .

SPJA asked us to help make the colossal Los Angeles Convention Center less confusing and more welcoming for guests by refreshing their wayfinding, area IDs, directional signage, and guest maps.

DIRECTIONAL SIGNAGE

Due to AXs longevity and explosive growth, they struggled with maintaining consistent wayfinding and signage throughout the convention. If last years welcome banner is still good, why change it, right?

Recognizing that mismatched signage was contributing to guest confusion, we developed a graphic language that drew guests in, eliminated uncertainty, and helped them find their way.

MAPSEVENT BRANDING

Within the main events of AX are several sub-events, parties, and shows with their own exclusive feel and brand identities. We provided graphic theming and design elements attach each sub event to the main event but give them an character all their own.

On Fourth of July weekend, Anime Expo takes over the Los Angeles Convention Center in Downtown LA. The annual celebration of Japanese entertainment and pop culture has exploded in popularity in recent years, drawing tens of thousands of guests to check out watch the latest anime, shop for merchandise and dress up as their favorite characters. With its massive exhibit hall, eclectic programming and events that go into the night, the convention schedule itself will keep you on your toes. Yet, sometimes you have to get out of the crowd and explore the rest of Los Angeles. Read on for things to do in LA during the 2019 Anime Expo.

The Downtown Los Angeles Fashion District is a dream world for cosplayers. It’s massive and renowned for its extensive collection of retail and wholesale fabric shops. It may take you a while to work your way through the blocks of shops surrounding 8th Street and Maple Avenue, but you’ll no doubt find more than what you need to make your next costume. There’s more to the Fashion District than fabric, though. Head over to Santee Alley to look for inexpensive shoes and accessories.

How Anime Expo Thrilled Fans By Cutting Line

Anime Expo is the largest anime convention in North America. For four days each July, over 90,000 passionate fans fill the Los Angeles Convention Center to celebrate Japanese animation and manga. In 2015, Anime Expo showcased 300 exhibitors, 60 entertainment guests, and the biggest artist alley in the nation. Its a jam-packed experience for the whole community so much so that the city of Los Angeles declared July 3 Anime Expo day.

The event brings together a tight knit community of staff and volunteers as well as fans. Hosted by the non-profit Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation, the events success relies on a small workforce and more than 1,600 volunteers. As the Division Manager of Registration and Exhibits, it is Amy Miyamotos job to deliver excellent customer service to anyone that comes through the door. With the number of eager attendees increasing by 12% last year alone, we sat down with Amy to find out how her small team tackled checking-in a growing crowd.

Anime Expo 2022 Will Return As A Live Event In La

After canceling their 2020 convention and going virtual in 2021, Anime Expo will return to Los Angeles as a live event in 2022.

Following two years of setbacks due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, Anime Expo has announced that the convention will return as a live, in-person event in 2022.

Anime Expo announced via press release that the event will return to its traditional venue of the Los Angeles Convention Center in 2022 for in-person festivities. The convention was cancelled in 2020 shortly after quarantine and stay-at-home orders were mandated, marking the first time that the convention missed a year in its almost three decade history. The expo returned as an online-only streaming event in 2021, with ticket sales being donated to the Hate Is A Virus community action fund, a non-profit organization that provides resources for Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities and fights against the rise in Anti-Asian hate crimes and discrimination across the country. Anime Expo says that it was able to donate over $77,000 to the group thanks to 2021’s ticket sales, as the online convention drew over 375,000 viewers across the world.

Ways Anime Expo Streamlined Entry

1. Entry management experts on-site

SPJA chose to partner with Eventbrites team of Field Ops experts, who used their previous experience working with more than 2,000 world class events to predict when fans would arrive. For cons, they knew that about 10% of fans show up before the gates even open, and an additional 40-60% tend to show up within the first three hours. By estimating the number of fans a volunteer could scan in a minute, they created a sitemap to prevent bottlenecks. Preparations went so smoothly, the team was able to open doors two hours early though with three Eventbrite experts on-site, the team knew they would have been supported if something had gone wrong.

Last year, fans had to wait in 2 or 3-hour lines even on the fastest day. This year, it took only thirty minutes for all the fans that camped out overnight to get through the door. The rest of the time, there were no lines at all, which shocked repeat attendees.

2. State of the art badge technology

In 2014, the badge process was a disaster. It was responsible for both a 3 hour delay opening the doors, and printing errors that made staff run out mid-day to restock. With Eventbrites secondary code assignment technology, all fans had to do was scan the ticket then scan the unique barcode on the badges. The technology allowed fans to be quickly identified later if necessary, and supported exhibitor, press, guest and VIP badges as well.

3. A stress-free volunteer experience

4. Easy access reporting

Use Random Japanese Name Generators

Several websites offer tools that create random titles and nicknames. It is the easiest way to find out what you would be called as an anime character. However, such tools do not tell you the meaning of the generated title. So, you should choose based on how they sound and not what they implywhich is a huge downside.
