Mamerto Adan is an engineer by profession, but a writer by night. He loves toys and knives. He also has a martial arts background.
Anime eyes alone are art pieces. They are not the beady orbs that one sketches on a face. They are complex lines and circles, colors and shadows that bring a character to life.
Anime faces are about as complex as any other drawn faces. Given the level of details, they are not simple cartoons. They are basically a reconstruction of a real human face. We need symmetry, forms, and alignments, or else our anime face will look malformed. The size of the face should also be considered. Small faces denote younger ages or female genders. Larger faces are for guys. Consider your sketch a failure if your face is not the right size.
Once you’ve learned to draw the eyes and face, I think you’re ready to do a full body figure. This article will show you step-by-step how to bring your awesome figure to life. In this case, we will do an anime girl. Now I have enough overly cute lolis in my Facebook feed, so just to give me a break, we will do a sort of emo girl. Now with that said, prepare your pens and paper and lets start sketching.

Male And Female Anime Faces
Although manga style faces are pretty feminine to begin with, there are certain ways to make the face look more masculine:
- The eyebrows are placed low above the eyes.
- The eyebrows may be thicker and less curved.
- The eyes are narrower.
- The eyelashes are minimal and less prominent.
- The pupil is small and circular.
- The lips are even less pronounced.
- The jawline is more pronounced.
- The neck is thicker.
- The nose is more pronounced.
Of course, not all of these methods must be applied. Sometimes, the sex difference is shown only by the clothes and the hairstyle!

Foundation Of The Drawing
The first step when starting your anime drawing is to create a circle as equal as you can. This gives you a starting outline of what most generic anime head’s look like
After creating a circle, you have to create a line straight down the middle and let the line come just a tiny bit out of the circle. The line and circle help you with the form of the cheeks and the chin. As seen above you only start to curve into the chin just under the circle. This gives more space for the head in general and more space for the mouth.
After finishing the jaw, you have to make a horizontal line through the circle, this will also guide you on further steps
Tip: When drawing a line, make sure not to draw in one line as you could easily mess it up, rather you should use the pencil to brush the line down.
Learn How To Color Anime Drawings
Effective use of color is quite simple, really: simply apply what you know about the color wheel.
Warm colors, cool colors, contrasting colorsexperiment with them to get the effects you want. Warm colors convey heat, danger, and passion. They tend to be very dramatic.
Cool colors are calmer and often used for water or ice. However, depending on whats around them, the feeling can change.
Contrasting colors, for instance, always draw the eye. Always be mindful of anyone who might be viewing your art and what mood or action you want to convey.

Shading can make two-dimensional objects look three dimensional. Proper shading will need some study and thought.

Like with perspective drawing, practice this by drawing simple objects and practicing shading techniques. Youll begin to get an almost intuitive sense of how shading works.

Anime Girl Standing Pose
Start by drawing lines that will help you with body proportions.
Now, youre going to draw all the sketches of each part of the body.
Starting at the head: make a circle with a triangle at the bottom. That will serve as the jawline.
For the torso: make a rectangle, followed by sausages for the arms. The shapes of the hands will depend on your desired form.
Make a circle for the hips, and sausages for legs, followed by shapes for the feet.
Also, mark the main joints to help you with movement and anatomy: shoulders, elbows, and knees.
Your sketch is finished. Now for the Lineart, try to follow all the main lines and think about fluidity when drawing. Pay attention to the curved lines and straight ones. That really makes a difference.
After youve finished, erase your sketch. Add details such as bone structures and shadows for better results.
All shadows depend on where the light is, so they may change according to each drawing and perspective.
Drawing Anime Environment And Backgrounds
As a cherry on top of the cake. Draw a background for your awesome character. What better way to showcase your character than with an environment supporting your beautiful anime character.
Even anime environments have that certain feel to them. The key being a semi-cel shade style that is present in the scenery.
Hard-edged shadows but also subtle transitions in color really do create a mesmerizing effect. Having these elements present in the scenery creates a very anime-like look and feel to an environment.
If you think about anime movies from the likes of Makoto Shinkai and Hayao Miyazaki which brought you the fantastic sceneries of The Garden of Words or My Neighbor Totoro. The immense beauty that those movies have inside is just staggering.
The colorful backdrops behind the characters only give you a sense of wonder and make it easy to dive into the world presented.
That kind of effect a background can have for your character. It really is something to consider of adding.
Hopefully, this article provided you with enough resources to keep your hand busy drawing. Anime and manga art is awesome and the simple aesthetics of the art style is something people tend to like. Simple eyes, curvy bodies, distinct facial features, yet you can easily go the realistic route and draw something very realistic looking and still keep the anime vibe intact.
