Add Long Pants Or Jeans

3 STEPS TO INSTANTLY FIND YOUR STYLE| NEVER draw from IMAGINATION!

Long pants or jeans are the simplest addition to your character when it comes to anime clothes drawing. Along the lines you already have for the legs, draw some slightly curved lines on the outside edge to give a baggy appearance .

From here, draw curved lines around the ankles for a pooling effect and a couple of light lines around the knees for the natural crease of the pants.

Draw around the outside of the leg lines before erasing these to create a baggy pants look on your character.

Paint Realistic Manga Portraits

Just because anime and manga have simplified color and bold linework doesnt mean you cant change the style. Plenty of anime styles use more realistic designs.

This tutorial shows you how to start a loose sketch and move into adding swathes of color, all the while blending and keeping color harmony.

When trying to paint realistic versions of anime characters its best to use a picture as a reference. Maybe even grab a sleek anime art book of your favorite series and use that concept art as a reference.

Just pick out a character and get painting!

Old Cartoon Drawing Style

How to Find Your Art Style

Lets start with the very old cartoon drawing styles from many years ago.

Most of the times people reference this type of cartoon drawing as Fleischer Cartoons since the art style was heavily used by Fleischer Studios.

These art styles are in black and white and with very high contrast body parts most of the time.

This style is also characterized by usually having short bodies and long limbs.

In fact, some people call this style of drawing noodle drawings. Since the arms and legs, the entire motion in fact, of the character would move a lot as if there were no bones in their bodies.

Some examples of this cartoon drawing style are:

  • Mickey Mouse

Here are some more images of this specific cartoon drawing art style!

On a side note, some recent video games have managed to bring that art style back into the modern area. For example, in the video game Cuphead, the art style is HEAVILY influenced by cartoons such as Betty Boop.

Here are some examples of Cupheads art style.

You can definitely see where the Cuphead artists got their inspiration!

Is crafting a style something artists should strive for? Pros share advice on how to develop a look.

If you were asked to make a list of your favourite artists, chances are you’d be able to explain the small quirks or creative decisions they’ve made that made an impact on you. You might have even tried to recreate these styles in your own pieces.

But is honing a style either someone else’s or your own an achievable goal? Or is it counter-intuitive to your development as an artist? Various factors contribute to the development of a style. From then on, I drew Sailor Moon fan art non-stop and tried to emulate the style.”

The 1960s To The Early 1980s

HOW TO FIND YOUR ART STYLE?? || 5 Easy Steps!

From the beginning of the Sixties – early seventies

This period was characterized by the simplicity of drawing with no focus on shading and it was the beginning of almost Colored Anime. The features are very simple and most of the characters look childish.

Mid-seventies – early eighties

The two periods, a little bit similar, in which the features of the characters appear to be more focused on, especially drawing eyes, and the characters appear larger and detailed, in these periods, studios have been adding more shading.

Add The Final Touches

Your anime drawing is almost complete! Sketch two vertical lines directly under the face for the neck, making these as close together as youd like depending on how skinny or wide the neck should be.

Finish up the facial features before adding in the final touches.

Anime hair will be the biggest difference in your drawing, depending on if youre working on an anime girl drawing or an anime boy drawing.

For boy hair, draw a small dot about one inch from the top of the face circle. From here, youll draw curved lines down to create a floppy hairstyle thats common for male characters. Youll frame these out by looping the lines up on the other side of your first lines to create shapes that look like a palm tree.

Hair on anime characters is typically messy so dont worry about it looking perfect.

For girl characters, youll start with those same curved lines that you would on a boy character, but keep these to only one or two lines. Youll then draw bigger curved lines around the outside of the face to create longer hair. Shade the outer edges of the hair to make it stand out and add any additional lines youd like to give it some more shape.

Once your drawing is complete, erase the guidelines before coloring or going over in ink.

Once youve added in the hair, you can erase your original guidelines and your drawing is finished!

Experiment With Medium And Color

Just like you shouldnt feel restricted to one style, you shouldnt feel tied to only using one medium either!

Mixed media art requires a wide range of skills, but it often pays off with stunning results. Some of the best artists use different media in surprising ways, and that alone gives their work a signature style.

Will you combine watercolor and acrylics? Copic markers and ink? What about scanning your traditional art and adding some digital touches?

The possibilities are endless, and finding the right combination can spark inspiration and make your work unique.

Atmospheric Perspective Is Important

So Perspective is Important, obviously, but atmospheric perspective is a very effective tool to use as well. Basically, atmospheric perspective is something artists mainly use in environment drawings but it can also be utilized in character drawings!

To make it simple, the atmospheric perspective is a perspective rule, where an object is getting lighter and is having less contrast the further it is in the background. Giving the picture the illusion of depth!

How To Start Drawing In A Manga Style

FIND YOUR ART STYLE (And How I Found Mine)

Aspiring manga artists can learn by trying to replicate particular comics or cartoons that inspire them. The first step is to allow yourself this period of complete lack of originality, says author and manga instructor Mark Crilley. Consider yourself like the apprentice learning from a master. Writer and illustrator Mildred Louis began that way too. I started drawing by basically copying anime, she says.

As you learn the skills, consider yourself like the apprentice learning from a master.

Not only will you sharpen your eye, but youll get your hand accustomed to the pen or stylus. Your muscles are not trained yet, and so much of drawing is muscle memory, comics artist Ethan Young says.

However, copying is very different from plagiarism. While replicating other work as a drawing exercise is valuable, dont pass it off as your own.

Drawing An Anime Head And Face

  • 1Draw an oval and divide it into 4 sections. This will be the basic outline of your anime characters head. The proportions dont have to be exact, but make the oval narrower at the bottom since that will be the chin. Once youve drawn the oval, draw a horizontal line through the center of it. Then, draw a vertical line through the center of it that intersects with the horizontal line. Later, you’ll use these lines as guides to draw the facial features.XResearch source
  • If you want your character to have a wider face, widen the bottom of the oval so its just slightly narrower than the top. Or, if you want your character to have a slender face, make the bottom of the oval even narrower than the top. There’s no single head shape used for all anime characters, so you can experiment until you find one you like.
  • 3Sketch the eyebrows above the horizontal line. Draw a long, downward curving line for each eyebrow. Make them slightly longer than the upper lash line you drew for the eyes. Then, thicken the ends of the brows that are at the center of the face.XResearch source
  • If youre drawing a feminine anime character, make the eyebrows fairly thin. For a masculine character, thicken the eyebrows so theyre more prominent on the face.
  • Make the nose the smallest feature on your characters face.
  • The nose will overlap with the vertical line you drew. To see it better, make it darker than the vertical line, or erase the vertical line around the nose.
