What Is Fan Service In Anime

Fujiko Mine & Sex Positivity

What is Fan Service?

Fanservice in anime can feel exploitive at its worst. Oftentimes, the female characters who are the subject of said fanservice have little agency over their own sexuality theyre often exposed by accident for comedic purposes or for the titillation of the viewer. In these instances, the subtext seems to suggest that female sexuality is a hidden thing thats exposed by happenstance or by the actions of a male character.

Director Sayo Yamamoto upends this arrangement in Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. This is an unabashedly sexy show with enough nudity to make a Highschool DxD fan blush, but the critical difference here is that the shows protagonist, Fujiko Mine, always retains primary agency over her sexuality, sometimes using it as a tool to her advantage as a thief.

Kakegurui Is Deliberate In Its Portrayal Of Fanservice

Much like the point of fanservice in Food Wars!, Kakegurui reserves its portrayals of provocative scenes for very specific moments. Kakegurui is about gambling and its main character, Yumeko Jabami, receives an unusual amount of pleasure from taking unbelievable risks. But shes not the only one, as there are several more students at Hyakkaou Academy who derive just as much titillation from risky gambles as Yumeko does.

As a result, Kakegurui is as guilty of overabundant fanservice as Food Wars! is. But since fanservice is dedicated to heightening the tension during gambles, Kakegurui gets a pass for its egregiously seductive scenes.

Konosuba Uses Fanservice Emphatically

A parody anime that doesnt make fun of its genre isnt a very good parody, so its great that KonoSuba is unapologetic with its fanservice. In fact, some scenes practically shove fanservice in the audiences face but thats the entire point.

KonoSuba is an isekai anime that makes fun of isekai anime. Whereas fanservice in the likes of Sword Art Online becomes an eye-rolling affair, fanservice in KonoSuba underlines its satirical nature and dares audiences to be as perverse as its characters. This kind of self-aware, fourth-wall-breaking fanservice can only enhance the comedy within the series and KonoSuba pulls it off beautifully.

Katanagataris Fanservice Builds Its Main Characters

Shichika Yasuri spent the entirety of his life on an isolated island with only his sister and father for company. Suffice to say that hes not socially adept, even at 24-years-old, which is why the fanservice moments in this anime are so brilliant.

Rather than the typical perverted high schooler who cant stop a nosebleed once he gets a panty shot, Shichika is blissfully unaware that he should feel any kind of pleasure from seeing Togame nude, or even from being in close quarters with her. In fact, Katanagatari uses fanservice moments to underline how naïve Shichika is and it effectively enhances both his and Togames personalities.

Monster Musume: Everyday Life With Monster Girls

Conception fanservice review episode 5 Fapservice

Episodes 12 + OVA | Aired Summer 2015 | Produced byLerche

Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls is a very perverted ecchi harem fanservice anime with a different take than most generic anime of its genre.

Summary

Monsters? Are real, and they want to date us! Three years ago, the world learned that harpies, centaurs, catgirls, and all manners of fabulous creatures are not merely fiction they are flesh and blood, not to mention scale, feather, horn, and fang. Thanks to the Cultural Exchange Between Species Act, these once-mythical creatures have assimilated into society, or at least trying to. When a hapless human teenager named Kurusu Kimihito is inducted as a volunteer into the government exchange program, his world is turned upside down. A snake-like lamia named Miia comes to live with him, and it is Kurusus job to take care of her and make sure she integrates into his everyday life. Unfortunately for Kurusu, Miia is undeniably sexy, and the law against interspecies breeding is very strict. Even worse, when a ravishing centaur girl and a flirtatious harpy move in, whats a full-blooded teenage human with raging hormones to do?

With a simple story, no silly out of place action scenes and simple lewd comedy. Monster Musume: Everyday Life with Monster Girls is a fanservice anime that proves sometimes less is more as long as it is executed properly. Its a series that was both fun and exciting to watch, and almost never failed to make me chuckle.

The Qwaser Of Stigmata

Episodes 36 + OVA | Aired Winter 2010 | Produced by Hoods Entertainment

Only in Japan, was my first thought when I first saw The Qwaser of Stigmata. It has a unique concept, I love that someone was brave enough to come out with something like this.

Summary

The St. Mikhailov Academy student Oribe Mafuyu comes across a mysterious silver haired boy named Sasha. He is a Qwaser, a being that draws power from Soma and is able to manipulate a specific element. And now, in the 21st century, the mystery revolving around an Icon turns the academy into the battlegrounds for the fight between the Qwaser!

Even though it can be a bit offensive. I strangely enjoyed this series a lot! It has a bit for everyone. With an original story, action, ecchi, shounen, super power, supernatural, a bit of comedy and actually made me want to brush up on my chemistry lessons.

Its Often Used As Filler

Fan service is an animators way of saying: I ran out of ideas for this episode, so heres another scene involving a partially nude woman! These asides often have nothing to do with the story, and just exist to buy more time.

In other words, you can watch the whole series without the fillers.

Youll find a beach episode in most anime series. What do you think these beach episodes are used for? You guessed it: to have an excuse to show bikini-clad women prancing around in the sand.

The Gurren Lagann scene above is from a filler episode full of fan service. This type of fan service is more self-awarethe male characters reactions are so strong that its actually funny.

How Did The Fan Service Come About

The Meaning of Fanservice – Anime Discussion

Fan service is not something created by the Japanese. The desire to please the public is as old as fiction itself. Tributes, parodies and fourth wall break are just some of the techniques used to please and attract fans.

One of the first notable examples of fan service is the cheerleaders who appeared in 1950 in professional sports. His flashy clothes, performance and dance were meant to please, entertain and excite fans. At a time when works with sex appeal or even erotic scenes were rare, fan service was an outlet used in the cinema to generate more profit.

Over time, the industry has ceased to be rigid in relation to the content shown in films, comics, music and animations. This makes the media trend increasingly sexually appealing. The term fanservice it appeared in the late 1980s and was featured in the Otaku video in 1991.

While some notice the fan service, others have no idea that they are dominated by it. Just note the successful Brazilian songs, both sertanejo and funk are full of sex appeal, all to please and attract the target audience. The whole world is contaminated so it is not something exclusive to Japan.

Not All Fan Service Is Bad Fan Service

Not all fan service is bad. In fact, fan service itself isnt inherently bad. Its just treated that way.

Sometimes by people who are prudish or act like sex or showing skin is taboo, illegal or dangerous. Despite they themselves getting down and dirty like everyone else.

That said, there is a way to spot good fan service that goes unnoticed. And isnt highlighted enough.

Heres some examples.

Fan Service Em Anime: O Que Homens E Mulheres Desejam

20 Fanservice Moments that Made Anime What it is Today J ...

In anime and manga, fanservice usually means sexual material, usually gratuitous or unrelated to the plot. Gainaxing is an early example of sexual fanservice taken to extremes. Panty shots and gratuitous cleavage are common fanservice elements for female characters male characters are more likely to be shirtless or sweaty.

The main thing that manages to make the fanservice work in is the fact that from the get go it set up its characters and the way they interact with each other in a way that seeing them in sexually exploitative positions or camera angles totally made sense. The characters frequently interject conversations with sexual innuendo and some of the jokes made even make light of subjects like lolicons. On Fanservice in Anime

ost fanservice seems to come from the female characters and directed toward male audiences. However, that doesnât mean only women are objectified in fanservice. Certainly not. Men can be hunks of meat on display as well.- Unlimited Discussions: Fanservice in Anime/Manga

What Is Fan Service In Anime

In a bid to make anime content more gratuitous and appealing to the viewing audience, the current trend in the cynosure of anime is the inclusion sexual innuendos and sexually gratifying scenes in the context of the anime plot. Generally speaking, Fan Service is the integration of otherwise irrelevant materials and plot lines into a work of fiction with the sole aim of pleasing the viewing audience.

While the emphasis is on sexuality other types like extended and detailed shots of Mecha and their transformation scenes, mascot placing, heightened and prolonged scenes of violence also constitute fan service since their primal goal is to allure anime fans otaku.

In the present day anime world the phrase sex sells is being justified by a huge faction of anime studios and it is no longer a surprise that Fan service which was formerly a blanket term for fan pleasing content, be it exaggerated scenes, extended feature demonstrations etc. is now mostly ascribed to nudity and seduction that has taken center stage in quite a number of anime shows.

Fan service is portrayed in a subtle manner reminiscent of pornography but bearing a marked dissimilarity from it. Typically characters are semi-unclad with over exaggerated sexual features and are depicted throughout the shows with close up panty shots, cleavage shots, nude shower scenes etc. essentially scenes intended to trip the sexual fancy of the viewing audience.

Sayonara Zetsubou Senseis Outrageous Censorship

Anime is famous for being pretty inventive with T.V. censorship. Inexplicably bright beams of light, conveniently placed objects, or birds in flight are all tools that have been used to cover up the areas of characters that arent primetime-appropriate. Without a doubt, though, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei takes the cake for the weirdest technique the show simply plasters the face of one of its voice actors all over the place.

It works for Zetsubou Sensei because the anime is a comedy that concerns itself in part with following common anime tropes to their logical, often absurd, extremes. Stamping Maeda-kuns face all over the place seems to be a reference to animes absurd censorship, as well as just being pretty funny in its own right.

Panty & Stocking W/ Garterbelt’s Fanservice Is Expected

As a parody anime, it would be strange if Panty & Stocking didn’t stock up on fanservice. Ironically, the funniest part about Panty & Stocking‘s fanservice might be the fact that it’s pretty limited. Panty & Stocking is known for its American animation influence and most of the series is portrayed in styles mimicking the Powerpuff Girls and other American cartoons. Even its episodic format is a love letter to American cartoons.

Only when Panty and Stocking transform into their angel forms to defeat ghosts does the animation switch to something more detailed and aligned with what the typical anime fan expects anime to look like. And quite frankly, that’s hilarious.
