Duvet By Ba Serial Experiments Lain

How Dragon Ball Became The Most Popular Anime Of All Time

Serial Experiments Lain is one of the most criminally underappreciated anime of its time. The show focuses on a communications network called the Wired, while exploring themes of communication and identity. Given the way it approached its setting, the show was way ahead of its time.

This is pretty unique as far as anime openings go. Duvet was written and performed by British alternative band Bôa. Alternative rock isnt always paired with anime openings, but this perfectly complements the OPs beautiful visuals.

Roy Mustang’s Character Development Made Him A Compelling Watch

As cool as Edward Elric is, its hard not to find Roy Mustang the more memorable character. From his appearances in the original 2003 series as someone obsessed with puppies for their loyalty and constantly lording his authority over Ed, to the character arc he went through in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Roys ability to switch from being a comedic character to being serious made him a compelling three-dimensional hero fans fell in love with.

Another character from the Big 3 of shonen action anime in the West, Naruto Uzumaki gave viewers the story of a kid with a single goal whos willing to do anything to achieve it. And while Luffy is a very similar character, the big difference there is Naruto actually achieved his goal.

In the current stories, he is the Hokage, giving viewers the closure they were looking for after over a decade of watching and reading the series. Though hes very much a protagonist in the vein of Goku, what separates him is that hes not as much about the love of fighting, so much as being recognized for being a talented ninja.

Overlooked: Eden Of The East

Despite its noted similarities to The Bourne Identity, 2009’s Eden of the East is an acclaimed series that deserves more mainstream attention. The story unfolds with college graduate Saki travelling to the US after a series of missiles hit Japan, where she discovers naked amnesiac, Takizawa outside of the White House.

Takizawa has no clue as to his real identity other than 8 billion yen in digital currency and the knowledge that he’s part of a group of 12 contestants tasked with saving Japan. Your Name The Most Popular Anime Of All Time Comes To America

Early in Your Name, the anime blockbuster thats conquered Japan, China, and the rest of Asia, a high-school girl named Mitsuha performs a ritual dance at her familys Shinto shrine. Dressed in the red and white costume of a miko shrine maiden, she and a partner pose and twirl, punctuating the leisurely rhythms of drums with precisely timed, jangly handbells. Mitsuhas rural village is perched on the edge of a gleaming lake, surrounded by verdant forests and soaring mountains. It looks like a modern-day Eden. To Mitsuha, though, its an inescapable cage of tradition. After the rite is over, she rushes down the shrines ancient staircase to the empty street below and cries out, in frustration, Make me a handsome Tokyo boy in my next life! As fate would have it, her wish is granted. Soon afterward, Mitsuha begins switching bodies with Taki, a teen-age boy at a Tokyo high school.

Midway through, moreover, Your Name takes a surprising turn. Its frivolity is interrupted by a great Something that cleaves the protagonists lives into before and after, in a way that anyone who has lived through a 9/11 or a Fukushima will understand. Eventually, the movie becomes a metaphysical love story steeped in Shinto cosmologyInterstellar, if that film had been written by Haruki Murakami, perhaps, instead of Christopher Nolan.

Overrated: The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya

Top 10 BEST Anime Series of All Time (Long Edition)

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya revolves around high school student Kyon and his dealings with a peculiar girl, the titular Haruchi. Together, they found the “SOS Brigade,” a club dedicated to investigating the paranormal. The novels on which it was based were monster hits in Japan and the series was also well-received.

While there’s a lot to love about it, Haruhi has become famous for its gimmick: the episodes were aired out of order — a weird decision that, depending on how you feel towards the show, is either really smart or trying to be really smart.

Overlooked: Space Pirate Captain Harlock

The 70s and 80s were dominated by Star Wars, and anime became similarly preoccupied with space operas. The best was undoubtedly Space Pirate Captain Harlock from legendary creator, Leiji Matsumoto, which you might know from the 2013 CGI movie.

While the original series animation might look dated in comparison, its a real buried treasure. This is largely thanks to the strength of its brooding, dark-hearted Captain, who has come to be considered one of the all-time great Romantic heroes.

Re: Zero Starting Life In Another World

Re:Zero starts off simple enough, but quickly turns into a series based on time loops, character development and unique villains. The adventure isnt linear, and the time loops dont always follow the expected path once reset.

The lead character, Subaru, is thrown into another world, Isekai, with his adventures kicking off after a chance encounter with the heroine, Emilia. It has quite a lot of comedic undertones, with Subaru, an anime fan, initially trying to predict all that will happen in his surroundings based on his experience watching anime. But things dont turn out this way for him.

The Rising Of The Shield Hero

The animation is of good quality. Despite some ethically dubious actions, the plot is highly riveting and makes you root for the main character in his uphill battle. Myne/Malty, the antagonist, is one of the most despised villains since Dolores Umbridge.

The storyline of The Rising of the Shield Hero has made it famous. Citrus Studios employs the Zero to Hero plotline, which is the most popular Otaku. Naruto, Bleach, Boku No Hero Academia, and others are examples of Anime with similar storylines.

Overrated: Highschool Of The Dead

Most Popular Anime Characters ALL TIME

2011’s Highschool of the Dead only lasted for a single season but left an indelible impression on those that watched it. All you need to know about the plot is that it involves a bunch of good-looking and strangely combat-ready school kids vs. a horde of zombies.

Its appeal relies on sensationalism, better known as fan service: extreme violence, extreme sexualization and extreme gore, which got it banned from China altogether. Despite the manga series hitting the New York Times’ Best Sellers list, both it and its anime adaptation have been widely panned as unoriginal and as brainless as the monsters it features.

Overrated: Seven Deadly Sins

Powered by a very lucrative manga series, Seven Deadly Sins‘ recent jump to anime greatly increased its international fanbase. It takes place in a fantastical version of medieval Europe where the titular “Sins” are seven uniquely-powered outlaws.

Although not without some interesting characters and entertaining brawls, the show is pretty generically formulated. It’s also peppered with cheap ecchi gags that feel entirely unnecessary, particularly when the underdeveloped main female character, Elizabeth is the subject of them.

Overrated: Dragon Ball Z

Yes, were going there. Dragon Ball Z initiated so many into the familiar story beats and epically staged fights that became hallmarks of shonen anime. As such, every similar series since walks in its footsteps.

This means it has a lot to be celebrated for and a lot to answer for. While hugely entertaining, over time Dragon Ball Z became a neverending superhero saga of power-ups on power-ups on power-ups, and characters trapped in developmental limbo.

Overlooked: Michiko & Hatchin

Produced by the creator of Cowboy Bebop and directed by Sayo Yamamoto of Yuri On Ice!!! fame, Michiko & Hatchin should be far better known than it is. It follows two women on a manhunt through the colorful landscape of South America: Michiko, a fun-loving ex-con and Hatchin, girl who Michiko rescues from abusive adoptive parents.

Together, they’re something of an odd couple but the mother/daughter relationship they develop gives the adventure a strong emotional grounding. Given how little we see people and places from that part of the world in anime, it’s a refreshing setting that’s as lively as it is authentic.

Yugi Is The King Of Games

Yu-Gi-Oh! is one of the most popular anime series of the 2000s. Everyone has seen at least one episode, and automatically knows what it means when someone says that theyve activated their trap card. Yu-Gi-Oh! went from being just a manga about games in Shonen Jump to becoming one of the most played card games in the world, and an anime franchise thats lasted twenty years and counting.

A large part of that came down to its leading man Yugi and Atem, two sides of the same coin. Where Yugi was compassionate and reached out to his opponents, Atem came in to deliver the smackdown when people got out of line. They worked well together, and had one of the best dub voices in all of anime.
