While One Piece doesnt have a lot of fillers, it has its fair share.
There are a few episodes that help the audience transition from one arc to another, or even a few dozen showing some meaningless backstories that can be skipped. Thats all.
However, when scouring through the net, I found many asking whether they could skip any arcs, Punk Hazard and Whole Cake Island in particular. The short answer is, no.
You should not skip the Punk Hazard arc in One Piece because it basically sets up the next two main arcs. Furthermore, it contains many details without which nothing will make sense anymore.
Now onto the Whole Cake Island arc, while it is one of the longest arcs in One Piece, it is also the most refreshing one and sets up the mood for the entire series.
For the first time, we see Luffy actually struggling against an opponent, and every Straw Hat going their own way and becoming stronger.
The Whole Cake Island should not be skipped at all, because while the repetition of Big Moms dialogues gets pretty annoying, in the end, Luffy and Katakuris fight makes up for everything.
Due to the pacing, the anime can get repetitive and boring at times, prompting many to skip entire arcs however, that often leads to confusion, and ultimately dropping the series.
Instead, you can always pick up the manga or access the sites dedicated to shortening the content to its bare minimum.
To conclude, sure, you can skip a lot, but should you? Absolutely not.
Dragon Ball Vs One Piece: Which Anime Is Better
Now that weve done the introductory part, we can continue with the analysis of these two shows. Were going to analyze the shows through several categories before giving our final verdict. The things we are going to compare are going to be the plot, the characters, the depth, the animation, and the overall influence of the anime itself. The analysis is primarily going to focus on the anime and not the manga. Let us begin.
The plot of Dragon Ball has the a lot of similarities with One Pieces plot when the Big Four are considered, especially the first part, where Son Goku was still a child. The collection of the Dragon Balls has a lot of similarities with Luffys quest for the One Piece treasure and although Dragon Ball had a much more pronounced world-saving element, the narrative is still relatively similar. Still, while One Piece retained its basic structure throughout, Dragon Ball expanded its fictional universe, and not just by adding new plots and evolving characters, but by literally expanding the universe, with the most recent iterations of the show focusing on confrontations of a cosmic scale.Dragon Ball has even introduced a multiverse, while One Piece remained in its own world. The world-building Toriyama has given us is enough for us to give this point to Dragon Ball.

No Character Is Forgotten
Another criticism of the rest of the Big Three is that many times fan-favorite characters will get introduced and have tons of spotlight at least, until three weeks later when they are thrown into the background with nothing to do. This is one of the worst trends that many shonen follow.
Not One Piece though, as even the smallest characters leave a large impact on the story. Furthermore, they always eventually come back, giving readers and viewers a “where are they now” finish to their arc that might have happened hundreds of chapters before.

The Adventure Is Groundbreaking
One Piece has become a phenomenon on a global scale that series like Naruto and Bleach can’t quite compare to. This refers to the story’s influence outside the realm of solely manga and anime. While Naruto arguably broke out in the West earlier than One Piece, the latter’s continuing success puts it above the former. An adventure with the scope of One Piece only comes around once in a lifetime.
In terms of telling an “epic” story, One Piece can be compared to stories like Moby Dick and Homer’s Odyssey. One of the things that attribute to this amazement is, of course, the amazing sense of adventure prevalent throughout the series.
Fillers Or Bad Pacing Lets Just Read The Manga Instead
After going through hundreds of reviews and messages, and watching the show myself, Ive gathered that the main blame for the anime turning boring lies with its pacing.
With the anime almost catching up to the manga, the studio has started stretching out 5-10 minutes of content to fill 24-minute episodes.
This has resulted in the quality dropping drastically, and fans dropping the series, only to never pick it up again.
The alternative to bad pacing is for the studio to include more fillers and put some distance between the manga and the animes current events.
What would you choose badly paced episodes, or Naruto part 2?
Let me give you a better alternative that does not require you to sit through the torture of consuming the same content every week. Read the Manga. Its that simple.
Unlike the anime, with each chapter, the mangas quality is increasing, and the plot is becoming more interesting. The humor has not dropped one bit, and theres no shortage of new content!
Just pinpoint the chapter in the manga where the last episode in the anime concluded, and dive right in.

Thank You Merry Snow Falls Over The Parting Sea
Thank You, Merry! is easily the emotional apex of One Piece and you dont have to even be a fan of the series to break down into tears over this touching, genuine story. The Straw Hat Pirates are off on another journey, when they notice that their ship, the Going Merry, begins to crack and fall into disrepair. This prompts Luffy and company to realize that its time to say goodbye to their first vessel and they hold a cathartic Viking funeral for the ship. This is such a beautiful example of what the strength of One Pieces characters can accomplish. The final moment where the spirit of Merry apologizes to the pirates for not being able to take them further on their journeyas if she did something wrongis just heart wrenching.
Best Anime Like One Piece
One Piece is an iconic anime, but what other shows like Dragon Ball or Vicky the Viking will fans of One Piece be sure to enjoy?
One Piece isn’t a perfect anime, but it has made a huge impact on fans all over the world. Few other anime have exactly captured that same sense of adventure, kinship, and endless possibilities the way that One Piece has. While that’s probably for the best, it’s easy to get stuck in that anime void of not knowing what to do next after watching it.

In the likeliest of scenarios, people have spent weeks if not months and years catching up with the anime and once that latest “To Be Continued” hit, it’s hard to adjust back to any other anime. Fell Short: The Animation In The Series Later Half
As much as strong storytelling and engaging characters are crucial to creating a successful anime series, it goes without saying that the show also has to be aesthetically pleasing. One Piece is produced by the acclaimed Toei Animation and the start of the show has a very pleasant look.
However, Toei splits their resources the further the show goes on and the animation takes a serious dive post-episode 500. Some arcs are borderline ruined because of the shoddy animation that holds them back, like the Dressrosa Arc.
Should Luffy Just Stop Running
Lets be honest most of the Whole Cake Arc and now even Wano, all we have done is see Luffy run away.
Sure, we did see a few epic fights like the one against Katakuri, but no matter how we try to justify it, 50-60 episodes of Luffy escaping does get pretty annoying.
Furthermore, due to the anime almost catching up with the manga, barely half a chapter of the latter is adapted per episode.
This just increases the build-up, and even the fights start to get boring. The same punching sequence and show of will power plays on for 10+ episodes in a row, with one or two flashbacks stuffed in.
Even binging the episodes at once doesnt help, as we have to skip past almost 80% of it to get to the actual new content.
However, the main issue is the animes pacing. If done well, all of the aforementioned problems wont really stop the audience from enjoying One Piece. But for the time being, Luffy, please stop running!!!

Longer Fights Than The Manga
When it comes to story-telling, Oda’s skills are second to none. Oda has created a vast world and it is filled with different types of characters. Oda uses every possible way to ensure that the readers can understand some of the deeper themes of the story.
Because of focusing on the story, the fighting sequences in the series are not drawn out. Oda likes to maintain brevity and therefore, fans who want to see fights are left disappointed. But the anime covers up for the lack of fights with its extended scenes especially in the Wano arc, there have been a lot of extended fights which include Kaido vs Oden, Roger vs Whitebeard.
Fell Short: The Repetitive Story Arcs
It’s easy for long-running anime to fall into patterns or repeat some of their more popular moves, but it’s becoming a growing problem in One Piece. There’s a real formula where Luffy and company land on a new and dangerous island, help out the royal family, and eventually overcome the foe and make a whole lot of fresh friends.
The consistently new characters add variety, but the repetitive formula becomes clear by the time the Wano Arc kicks in. At that point, it has been done several times before and feels less inspired each time.

Translation And Dub Issues
In the original manga, the term “One Piece” is often accompanied by an additional string of text translating roughly to “the great hito-tsunagi treasure” , initially as a separate descriptor and later as a base-text directly glossed with the “One Piece” katakana.
The exact meaning of “hito-tsunagi” has not yet been clarified, and current theories offer three possible readings:
- That it should be read as “ä¸ã¤ãªã” – a more or less literal Japanese translation of ” one piece”.
- That it should be read as “人ç¹ã” – a phrase roughly translating to “the rope linking all men”.
- That it should be read as “hitotsu-nagi” or “ä¸ã¤åª” – a phrase roughly translating to “one sea at peace”.
English translations – professional or otherwise – generally do not relay this text consistently, if at all. The Viz manga, for instance, refers to it as ” lost treasure” in Chapter 2, and as “greatest single treasure” in Chapter 507.

As the icing of the cake, One Piece world is filled with many unique technologies that help enrich the story. To move from one island to another in Grand Line, one needs a log post or an eternal post. For long distance communication, one uses a special type of snail called den den mushi, with many varieties of it. And all the other fascinating things: the seastone, the vivre card, the dial, the clouds in sky island, the bubbles in Sabaody, and many more.
I can say without a doubt that One Piece has the best world building of any manga ever, and maybe one of the best world building of any fictional stories in any media.
