Select a layer in the Composition panel,or display a layer in the Layer panel.

Choose Layer > Mask > New Mask. A new mask appearsin the Composition or Layer panel with its handles at the outeredges of the frame.

Animate A Movie Clip On A Masklayer

Select the mask layer in the Timeline.

To edit the movie clip in place and to display the movieclips Timeline, double-click the movie clip on the Stage.

Apply motion tweening to the movie clip.

When the animation procedure is complete, click the Backbutton to return to document-editing mode.

To lock the layer again, click in the Lock column forthe mask layer.

Animate A Mask In Final Cut Pro

As with many effects and titles in Final Cut Pro, you can animate simple and complex masks using keyframes.

Add a simple mask effect or a Draw Mask effect to a clip in the Final Cut Pro timeline.

Select the clip, then position the playhead in the timeline where you want the animation to begin.

If the inspector isnt already shown, do one of the following:

Choose Window > Show in Workspace > Inspector .

To create the starting shape of your animated mask, do one of the following:

Adjust the onscreen controls in the viewer.

Adjust the mask controls in the Video inspector.

To add keyframes for the starting shape of your animated mask, do one of the following in the Video inspector:

Add a keyframe for a single parameter: Move the pointer over the area to the right of the parameter you want to animate, then click the Keyframe button that appears.

Add a keyframe to every mask effect parameter: Move the pointer over the far-right side of the effect heading, click the down arrow that appears, and choose Add from the pop-up menu.

After you add a keyframe, the Keyframe button changes to yellow, indicating that the playhead is positioned on this keyframe.

Continue adjusting the mask shape and adding keyframes as needed.

To see the effect of your animation, play the clip.

Points To Keep In Mind

When you create masks on a layer, the mask names appear in the Timeline panel outline in the order in which you create the masks. To organize and keep track of your masks, rename them.

To rename a mask, select it and press Enter or Return , or right-click or Control-click the mask name and choose Rename.
When you create additional masks for one layer in the Layer panel, make sure that the Target menu in the Layer panel is set to None otherwise, you replace the targeted mask instead of creating a mask. You can also lock a mask to prevent changes to it.

When creating or editing masks, look in the Info panel for information such as the mask name and the number of vertices in the mask.

To create a mask that you can move independently of the primary layer that it is masking, do the following:

Create the mask on a separate white solid layer, and use that solid layer as a track matte for the primary layer.

Use parenting to make the solid layer a child of the primary layer, so that the mask moves with the primary layer as if it were applied directly. Because the solid layer is a child layer, it can also be animated independently of its parent.

You can use motion tracking to make the solid layer follow moving objects in the primary layer.

Create Masks From Text Characters

The Create Shapes From Text command extractsthe outlines for each character, creates shapes from the outlines,and puts the shapes on a new shape layer. You can then use theseshapes as you would any other shapes.

The Create Masks FromText command extracts the outlines for each character, creates masksfrom the outlines, and puts the masks on a new solid-color layer. Youcan then use these masks as you would any other masks.

Select the text to convert to masks:

To create masks for all characters in atext layer, select the text layer in the Timeline panel or Compositionpanel.

To create masks for specific characters, selectthe characters in the Composition panel.

Do one of the following:

Choose Layer > Create Masks From Text.

Right-click or Control-click the layer or text and choose Create Masks From Text from the contextmenu.

Create A Mask Path From A Motionpath

In the Timeline panel, click the nameof the Position property or Anchor Point property from which youwant to copy the motion path.
