Funimation: You Can Watch Anime In Higher Definition
While both Crunchyroll and Funimation have high-definition anime, Funimation has classics that have been updated to look better than the 480p it was at before and made it be 1080p. Also, whenever you look up an anime on Funimation and pick which one to watch, it tells you the rating and definition it is at so you do not have to guess.
This comes in handy when you want to know what quality your anime is in for those who do not wish to watch an anime in lower quality.

Crunchyroll viewers can sign up for the free account or one of its tiered membership options. With a free profile, you can stream content one week after the broadcast in Japan with ads. Crunchyroll simulcasts the content the same day for premium users and only an hour after airing in Japan.
Both free and paid accounts have access to “subbed” and “dubbed” content. When users stream content that originally airs in Japan, subtitles will be available in English and other languages. Those who would prefer to watch instead of reading can select an anime’s “dubbed” version in their language. In English dubs, the Japanese voice actor has been replaced by an English voice actor.

What About Viewers Who Prefer To Hear The Original Whenever Possible If You Hardly Ever Use Dubs And Prefer The Original Japanese Note That Theres A Difference In The Way Crunchyroll And Funimation Display The English Translated Text: While Crunchyroll Uses Normal Subtitles Without The Background That Are Customizable And Generally Not Distracting Funimation Uses Closed Captions Instead
Those who use the Funimation app might be particularly irritated about this, since the captions’ distracting, dark background cant be removed within the app. Visuals are very important in anime, so being unable to see a stripe of the screen due to a dark background can be annoying.

Why Does The Same Channel Or Service Broadcast Different Shows In Different Countries
It all boils down to licensing. The content creators and distributors want to sell their shows’ rights to those wholl pay them the most for their efforts. Wherever multiple buyers have their eye on the same stuff, a bidding war begins .
However, the trouble with this system is that demand for particular programs can be much higher in specific locations, creating a different level of demand.
Heres where the geographical bit comes into play. The distributor can sell its shows, movies, games/matches, or whatever else to one service in one country and to another in a different country. Whichever country holds the license to that show, then they own the exclusive rights.
Its a strange setup, as some of the TV you can watch for free in your country will only be available to watch under subscription in other countries, and vice versa. Thats why using a geo-block workaround like StreamLocator is such a great tool for all of us. It delivers masses of free content from international services to us without the problem of subscriptions. It also provides access to the shows and channels with geographical blocks in place.
Anyway, lets not get bogged down in the legal stuff and the science. Were here to discuss whos got the best anime and mangathe UK or the US.
So, lets dive inwhos got the best stuff and how do you get your hands on it?

Which Crunchyroll Plan Is Right For You
Most casual anime, manga, and Asian drama fans, especially those that want to catch up on old episodes of series, should be content with the free Crunchyroll membership option. Those who would consider themselves anime enthusiasts, who need to watch the latest episodes as soon as theyre available, will need to upgrade to either the Crunchyroll Premium or Crunchyroll Premium+ tier, however.
There really is very little difference between the Premium and Premium+ Crunchyroll subscription options when it comes to streaming content. Crunchyroll Premium+ is only worth getting for those hardcore anime fans who attend conventions or expos, particularly Crunchyroll Expo. If you just want to watch the latest episodes of shows on Crunchyroll in HD quality with zero ads, Crunchyroll Premium is all you need.

Two giant anime streaming services just merged into one.
Naruto currently appears on both services.

The plan is to create one anime streaming service to rule them all.
“With the addition of Crunchyroll, we have an unprecedented opportunity to serve anime fans like never before and deliver the anime experience across any platform they choose, from theatrical, events, home entertainment, games, streaming, linear TV — everywhere and every way fans want to experience their anime,” Tony Vinciquerra, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said in a statement. “Our goal is to create a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible.”
“Anime is a rapidly growing medium that enthralls and inspires emotion among audiences around the globe,” Kenichiro Yoshida, chairman and CEO, Sony Group, added in the statement. “The alignment of Crunchyroll and Funimation will enable us to get even closer to the creators and fans who are the heart of the anime community.”
All of which is business speak for, let’s create a mega anime streaming service as soon as humanly possible.
Crunchyroll Vs Funimation: Price Comparison
The standard subscription for Cruchroll was recently changed to $7.99 per month to reflect the enhanced services and variety it offers. For $9.99, viewers gain access to other cartoon channels including Cartoon Hangover, NickSplat, and others. For a monthly $14.99 users additionally get discounts at the MunchPak and Right Stuff Anime stores.
For Funimation, the monthly price is $5.99, but for only an additional $2 a month, users get up to five simultaneous streams, deals in the store, and offline mobile downloads. For $99.9 per year, you also get 2 rentals and an anniversary gift each year.
Although Funimation is has a cheaper option, Crunchyroll has a much more diverse library for just a little more, while also offering manga and other goods. So, while its slightly more expensive, this feels justified, making it hard to declare one as better priced than the other.
Winner of the rounds: Funimation, since all its options are cheaper, but Crunchyroll comes close because of its variety
When it comes to choosing between Crunchyroll and Funimation, the answer isn’t necessarily easy, since both are top streaming services for anime and other Japanese media. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but this list should hopefully help you make an informed choice depending on the experience youre looking for.

What Does The Merger Mean For Crunchyroll And Funimation
This is not the first time former rivals Crunchyroll and Funimation have worked together, as the two streaming platforms previously had a partnership in 2016.
The partnership allowed select Funimation titles to be available to stream on Crunchyroll and vice versa, while Funimation was also the distributor for the other’s home video catalog.
Funimation and Crunchyroll’s partnership ended in 2018 when Sony acquired the former and AT& T purchased the latter’s owner Otter Media.
Sony shared in its press release that it planned to combine both Crunchyroll and Funimation to make one anime streaming platform, though it is unclear when this will take place and both will remain separate in the meantime.
The new merger allows Sony to “create a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible,” Tony Vinciquerra, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc, revealed in the press release.
Vinciquerra added: “We are committed to creating the ultimate anime experience for fans and presenting a unique opportunity for our key partners, publishers, and the immensely talented creators to continue to deliver their masterful content to audiences around the world.
What Internet Speed Is Required For Crunchyroll
A variety of video resolutions are available for all content on Crunchyroll. By default, the Crunchyroll website and apps automatically select the optimal resolution for your connection speed but these can be manually adjusted from within the video player.
If an episode is new, or particularly popular, and has a lot of users watching it at the same time, its image quality may diminish dramatically. If this happens, the best thing to do is to wait at least an hour and then try to watch it again.
For viewing videos in SD and 480p, Crunchyroll recommends a speed of at least 600 kbps and 1500 kbps respectively. To watch videos in 720p or 1080p, an internet speed of at least 2500 kbps and 4000 kbps is suggested.
Remember that the 720p and 1080p options are only available to Crunchyroll Premium and Premium+ subscribers.
