Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

Top 10 Scariest Anime of All Time

Typical to the Vampire Hunter D formula, this movie is all about violence, gore, and long action scenes.

The plot can be summarized as this:

Rich people want to get their daughter back from a vampire.

She ends up with a bit of Stockholm syndrome and now it got a bit more complicated.

That is all you really need to know plot-wise.

If youre itching for some of that old fashioned spooky action with limbs flying everywhere then be sure to give this one a watch. Or at least bookmark it for a rainy day.

Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress

Think Attack on Titan, but replace the goofy looking titans with nightmare fuel.

And then add a buttload of steam-punk and you have this show.

Humans live inside fortified walls while the outside is overrun by steam-punk zombies that look like my sleep paralysis demons.

Of course, the people want to adventure outside of the walls. And the zombies want to eat.

So prepare for lots of death.

I think its a tad less suspenseful than Attack on Titan, but definitely a lot more scary.

Blood: The Last Vampire

If youre only interested in blood and gore, then this 48-minute anime movie is perfect for you. Directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo , Blood: The Last Vampire takes place in Japan during the 60s and follows Saya whose sole mission is to kill Teropterids, or monsters who drink blood.

Blood: The Last Vampire was the film that launched the entire Blood franchise. So if the short horror anime film isnt enough to quench your vampire thirst this Halloween, theres always the 50-episode Blood+ anime series thats set in an alternate universe.

The Junji Ito Collection

Dont let the MAL score scare you off. The collection is based on a very successful horror manga series, and just didnt do it justice, I guess.

But if you have not read the manga you should have no problems watching.

Its a collection of horror stories, which vary in degree, regarding everything fear inducing.

Never-escaping nightmares, deadly curses, slugs growing in your mouth, you know the usual stuff. Basically like Twilight Zone, but scarier.

And if it doesnt scare you, it might just make you laugh, believe me on that one.

Have you ever thought about how cool it would be to be immortal?

Well, have you also thought about the societal ramifications of immortality? Thought so.

Well this anime kind of answers that question as people become Ajin, immortal humans.

As you can imagine, they dont care too much about justice since theres no real way to punish them.

The show is psychological, action packed, the Ajin look spooky. And the CGI will scare you if nothing else will.

Dusk Maiden Of Amnesia

Scary Anime Wallpapers

Not as much of a horror anime as it is very Halloween-themed, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia follows the life of a ghost named Yuko who is attached to the school where Teiichi, a middle school student resides.

Teiichi is able to see Yuko and investigates her death that took place in the school. There are many mysteries surrounding Yuko and her appearance, which is further investigated by the establishment of a paranormal club.

The scenery and mystery of the series make this underrated gem worth a watch, especially for the romantic aspects and implications that a ghost must endure when they are tied to a certain area until they can pass on.

Not Scary: Pet Shop Of Horrors

In Chinatown, Los Angeles, the enigmatic Count D sells a variety of unique animals at his pet shop. These exotic fauna come with a high price, too. For every one of the pets sold by Count D includes a set of rules that must be followed to the letter. Otherwise, horrible things will happen to the owners.

Pet Shop of Horrors started off as a manga series before being adapted into four OVA features. The basic premise is lifted from Gremlins, but there’s a focus on existing mythological beasts. The stories will no doubt entertain they’re just not very frightening.

Plot

The main plot of the game takes place in 1986 within a small time frame of two days from October 4th to 5th on a small, remote island called Rokkenjima of the Izu Islands. This is where Kinzo, the head of the rich Ushiromiya family, lives.

As his death seems near, eight of the family members gather at an annual meeting to discuss how to divide the inheritance. They are joined by three other family members and five servants. As the first deliberations begin, a typhoon looms, preventing them from leaving the island, while the strangest things happen at the same time and one after the other dies.

The protagonist Battler Ushiromiya, from whose perspective the plot is described, is the son of Rudolf, who in turn is the second son of Kinzo. Battler has not attended the meeting for six years, as he grew up with his maternal grandparents after the death of his mother Asumu and also took their last names.

When his grandparents died, he moved in with his father, his second wife Kyrie and his half-sister Ange. On the island, he is first confronted with an old legend about the witch Beatrice who is said to live in the forests of Rokkenjima. In the entrance hall, he meets a portrait of the witch that Kinzo had made, along with an epitaph.

Scary: Vampire Princess Miyu

What Is The Scariest Thing That Happened To You While In Cosplay? AUSA 2016 Cosplay

Miyu is half-human and half-Shinma, but she was born a vampire. She’s quite old despite physically resembling a teenage girl. Miyu and her servant Larva spend their lifetimes hunting for other stray Shinma, ancient demons that prey on humans.

In both the four-part OVA series and the 1997 television adaptation, Miyu comes up against some particularly macabre opponents. These horrifying things that go bump in the night will possibly haunt your dreams. Miyu’s life story is an enthralling one of Gothic sensibilities. The manga’s writer Toshiki Hirano successfully marries Japanese folklore with brooding, contemporary horror.

Corpse Party Tortured Souls

In the haunted Heavenly Host Elementary school, a terrible fate awaits students who decide to perform a ritual within the classroom. Within seconds, an earthquake shatters and they fall into another dimension, filled with the souls of those trapped there. Can they survive the ghosts of those brutally murdered years ago?

Dubbed as one of the most gruesome anime series in existence, the Corpse PartyOVAs are not for those who cringe at horror. Its perfect to binge watch in one go, especially if you are looking for a horror anime that wont take a while to get through. What Corpse Party lacks, however, is a developed story that is found in the visual novel counterparts. Although some parts are covered, especially about the antagonist.

This just gives viewers more of a reason to invest in the games for a more complete picture. However, the fact that this is animated certainly ups the scare factor quite a bit. Grab this small series for a horror night with friends.

High School Of The Dead

Scary Anime Wallpapers

The Walking Deadis still considered the go-to zombie series, and there is a lot of love for defeating the undead when it comes to cartoons, shows, and anime. High School of the Dead has the typical setup for a zombie horror story, deserving a spot on this list. A pandemic called the Outbreak spreads throughout Japan, and humans turn into zombies while groups of students struggle to survive.

It sounds incredibly generic, especially with the seemingly stereotypical anime tropish characters. However, High School of the Dead proves to be something more than it portrays. Morality is questioned, characters take unexpected turns, and the show is overall an enjoyable watch. The action scenes are particularly gruesome, and the story behind the pandemic is quite interesting.

There is one thing about High School of the Dead, however. There is a lot of fanservice and ecchi moments that do not make it a suitable watch for all audiences. Even if you arent a fan of this type of anime, it may still surprise you with a good horror story. Unfortunately, we may never see a conclusion, as the author of the series, Daisuke Sato passed away this year. His work will never be forgotten, serving as an example of a well-done zombie anime for years to come.

The Garden Of Sinners

The Garden of Sinners is a seven-part movie series chronicling the life of the knife-wielding Shiki Ryougi and her classmate Mikiya Kokutou. Despite each movie having its own plot, the underlying story focuses on the relationship between Shiki and Mikiya.

The anime movies deal with the paranormal and explore mature themes like suicide, rape, patricide, incest, and murder. However, one film that particularly sticks out is Paradox Spiral which follows the strange happenings at an apartment complex. But for an intense Halloween weekend, you could just marathon them all.

Higurashi: When They Cry

Imagine a peaceful summer day shared with friends, the cicadas buzzing, the fun activities after school, and the sun beating down as everyone laughs together. Everything is perfect in the rural town Hinamizawa.

That is, until strange events start occurring around town, murders take place, and the lives of the friends are twisted into dark realities. Higurashi first appears to be the typical slice of life/school life anime, which is proven to be false during every arc. The cheerful characters soon become twisted, psychotic, and begin murdering one another in brutal ways. Why is this happening?

Its up for the watcher to piece together the various incidences and arcs that often end in death. At first, Higurashi is confusing, but its beyond worth it to continue watching and unravel the mysteries of the rural village and uncover the conspiracies of the incidents.

Its the perfect horror anime for fans of the genre, but its definitely not for the faint of heart, as it is very violent and has some very disturbing scenes of torture, bodily harm, and murder. This fact makes it a great choice to get in the mood for Halloween.

The Empire Of Corpses

This one is definitely more spooky and thought provoking than it is scary.

Its an homage to Frankenstein, but with a steampunk setting and John Watson as a character.

So even some Sherlock Holmes action here.

In the world of The Empire of Corpses, dead bodies are used as tools to do menial work.

However, what happens when one of the corpses suddenly develops a soul?

Should it be considered alive?

What is the difference between life and death anyway?

Again, its more on the hmm side of things, than it is in the booo category. But plenty of horrific scenes to go around.
